(Note: we have no evidence that Voltaire actually practised vegetarianism, though his writings were clearly sympathetic to the idea) Extract from The Extended Circle by Jon Wynne-Tyson:
Direct link: amazon.co.uk How pitiful, and what poverty of mind, to have said that the animals are machines deprived of understanding and feeling . . .
Judge (in the same way as you would judge your own) the behaviour of a dog who has lost his master, who has searched for him in the road barking miserably, who has come back to the house restless and anxious, who has run upstairs and down, from room to room, and who has found the beloved master at last in his study, and then shown his joy by barks, bounds and caresses. There are some barbarians who will take this dog, that so greatly excels man in capacity for friendship, who will nail him to a table, and dissect him alive, in order to show you his veins and nerves. And what you then discover in him are all the same organs of sensation that you have in yourself . Answer me, mechanist, has Nature arranged all the springs of feeling in this animal

Voltaire

Voltaire, assumed name of François Marie Arouet (1694-1778), French writer and philosopher, who was one of the leaders of the Enlightenment. Voltaire was born in Paris, November 21, 1694, the son of a notary. He was educated by the Jesuits at the College Louis-le-Grand. Early Brilliance Popularity at Court In 1728 Voltaire returned to France. During the next four years he resided in Paris and devoted most of his time to literary composition. The chief work of this period is the Lettres anglaises ou philosophiques (English or Philosophical Letters, 1734). A covert attack upon the political and ecclesiastical institutions of France, this work brought Voltaire into conflict with the authorities, and he was once more forced to quit Paris. He found refuge at the Château de Cirey in the independent duchy of Lorraine. There he formed an intimate relationship with the aristocratic and learned Gabrielle Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, marquise du Châtelet, who exerted a strong intellectual influence upon him. Voltaire's sojourn at Cirey in companionship with the marquise du Châtelet was a period of intense literary activity. In addition to an imposing number of plays, he wrote the Élements de la philosophie de Newton (Elements of the Philosophy of Newton), and produced novels, tales, satires, and light verses.

Gicau - are we talking about the same man? Voltaire believed in God? Really Voltaire was famous for being out to prove that the Bible was a fabrication and should be done away with. He predicted during his lifetime that nobody in the world would even know what the Bible was by the time the 1800's rolled around. Well, God had the last laugh. When Voltaire died, his house was purchased by the Bible Society for the production and distribution of God's word - The Bible.

Voltaire (1694-1778)

Empress Catherine II, a devoted admirer of Voltaire's writings, stimulated his cult in Russia. In response, the philosopher dedicated a poem to her. Catherine's reply, dated October 15, 1763, initiated a correspondence that influenced her on many matters until Voltaire's death in 1778. She spared no expense to secure his library of 7,000 annotated volumes bound in red morocco that include most of his private papers and her own letters to him, most of which have been preserved in the public library of Saint Petersburg. Catherine II commissioned several portraits of Voltaire. In 1784, the intriguing marble Voltaire Seated in an Armchair arrived from Paris and was ceremoniously installed in a grotto at Czarskoe Selo castle before it was moved to the Hermitage in 1805. This bust from the world-famous Stroganoff collection in Saint Petersburg was presumably acquired by Count Aleksandr Sergeevich Stroganoff directly from Houdon during the count's years in Paris from 1770 to 1779. It was displayed in Saint Petersburg along with Houdon's bust of Denis Diderot (1974.291).
