Jules Verne
By Elaine Ernst Schneider
April 2, 2001 Jules Verne was a French author. He loved exploring the “why” of things. First, he studied law. Then Jules turned to literature. He wrote about spacecraft, guided missiles, submarines, and helicopters before they were even invented. Jules Verne imagined space travel and inventions such as the aqua lung. His love of science caused him to study the earth and the human body. Then he used the knowledge he acquired to write adventures. For example, Journey to the Center of the Earth takes the reader beneath the earth's crust by entering through a volcano. Jules’ love for travel and places is seen in his book Around the World in Eighty Days. Jules Verne’s work was always exciting – and just as popular now as it was in the 1800’s. He was an extraordinary man far in advance of the time in which he lived. Because his fantasy adventures introduced the first elements of imaginary science, Jules Verne is known as the “Father of Science Fiction.” You may purchase two of his most famous books by clicking on the icons on the left of this page.

Verne, Jules Pronunciation Key Verne, Jules Verne is especially known to English readers in translations of his Five Weeks in a Balloon A Journey to the Center of the Earth From the Earth to the Moon Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea Around the World in Eighty Days The Mysterious Island (1875), and Michael Strogoff (1876). Extremely popular, he wrote more than 50 books by the time he died. Plays and motion pictures have been made from many of his works, which are still widely read, particularly by the young. In 1989 the manuscript of Verne's long-lost 1863 novel Paris in the 20th Century was discovered; the pessimistic and prophetic futurist work was published in 1994. See A. B. Jules Verne
Jules Verne was born in 1828, in Nates, France. Jules' parents were of a seafaring tradition, one factor which influenced his writings. As a boy, he ran off to be a cabin boy on a merchant ship, but he was caught and returned to his parents. In 1847 Jules was sent to study law in Paris. While there, however, his passion for theater grew and from 1848 he wrote opera libretti. In 1863 his first novel Five Weeks in a Balloon was published. He struck a new vein in fiction writing by describing adventures carried out by means of scientific invention in exotic places, like submarines and space travel. He achieved huge popularity in his life time and greatly influenced the early work of H.G. Wells. 1828 1905. Jules GABRIEL Verne. Jules Gabriel Verne was born in 1828,in Nates, France. Jules father was a lawyer and both parents
http://www.tombtown.com/bios/jverne.htm
JULES GABRIEL VERNE Jules Gabriel Verne was born in 1828, in Nates, France. Jules' father was a lawyer and both parents expected their son to follow that career. Reportedly, as a boy, Jules ran off to be a cabin boy on a merchant ship, but was subsequently caught and returned home to his parents. In 1847 Jules was sent to study law at the University of Paris. While there, however, his passion for writing plays grew. Jules wanted to continue writing, and turned down his father's offer of the family practice. Outraged, his father discontinued supporing Jules' expenses in Paris. In letters home, Jules humorously complained about his lack of funds and expressed his interest in finding a wealthy woman to marry. As luck would have it, a wealthy woman he did find. With assets worth about $200,000, a young widow from Amiens captured his heart. The next several years saw Verne selling stocks, and writing comedies on the side. He was not successful in his writings until 1862 when Verne published his first novel, Five Weeks in a Balloon. Other notable novels were Journey to the Center of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Verne's success came from his remarkable ability to carfully document and construct a scientific foundation for each of these (and other) fantastic and seemingly improbable fiction stories. With remarkable accuacy, Jules Verne forecast many scientific events and breakthroughs of the 20th century, including guided missiles, outer-space flights, helicopters, and submarines.

Library Jules Verne Dictionary
Jules Verne
Jules Verne was a French author of the late 19th century who is regarded as the father of science fiction. He was born in 1828 in Nantes and studied law in Paris, where, to the displeasure of his father, he developed a passion for theater. His first play was published in 1850, but he was not very successful until the publication of his story “Five Weeks in a Balloon” in 1869. Verne spent a long time in Paris libraries researching everything from astronomy to engineering as a foundation for his fantastic adventure stories. Because of the 19th century interest in science and invention, his novels, such as JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON, and 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, became extremely popular. During his life, they brought Verne wealth and allowed him to buy a yacht and sail around Europe. They also began the science fiction tradition by predicting 20th century advances such as space flight and submarines, and are still widely read today.
