Jules Verne
© eMe Textos:

Jules Gabriel Verne was born on February 8, 1828, in Nantes, France. His parents were of a seafaring tradition, a factor which influenced his writings. As a boy, Jules Verne ran off to be a cabin boy on a merchant ship, but he was caught and returned to his parents. In 1847 Jules was sent to study law in Paris. While there, however, his passion for the theatre grew. Later in 1850, Jules Verne's first play was published. His father was outraged when he heard that Jules was not going to continue law, so he discontinued the money he was giving him to pay for his expenses in Paris. This forced Verne to make money by selling his stories.
After spending many hours in Paris libraries studying geology, engineering, and astronomy, Jules Verne published his first novel

Author Watch: Jules Verne (1828-1905)
By Mark O'Neill
February 12, 2004 I am going to start this column with one of my favourite authors. Jules Verne has always fired my imagination with his tales of travel, discovery and adventure. Born in France, and author of famous works such as "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," "Around the World in 80 Days" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth," his books have been made into movies or have formed the basis for movies. "80 Days..." formed the basis for a British BBC travel series as well as movie spin-offs and parodies. (Jackie Chan is currently filming a version due out in cinemas next year). "20,000 Leagues..." formed the loose basis for the Samuel L Jackson movie "Sphere" with Sharon Stone and Dustin Hoffman. So even to this day, Verne's work still influences the modern media. Average Selling Prices
I have discovered that Verne is a well sought-after author in bookselling circles. For example, a quick scan at eBay.com shows a first edition starting at $100 (it will definitely finish at a higher price) and other volumes going for between $60 and $80. Mass-market editions start at $1 and don't sell well, but older versions are definitely worth a lot of money, depending on the condition of the book.

Jules Verne (1828-1905) This French author is regarded as the founder of modern science fiction. He was born in Nantes, studied law in Paris, and from 1848 until 1863 wrote opera librettos and plays. In 1863 he achieved his first real success with the publication of Cinq Semaines en ballon Five Weeks in a Balloon , 1869), a short fantasy that anticipated his later work.
Verne rode a wave of 19th-century interest in science and invention to enormous popular favour. Laying a carefully documented scientific foundation for his fantastic adventure stories, he forecast with remarkable accuracy many scientific achievements of the 20th century. He anticipated flights into outer space, submarines, helicopters, air conditioning, guided missiles, and motion pictures long before they were developed. Among his most popular books are Voyage au centre de la terre From the Earth to the Moon Vingt mille lieues sous la mer Mysterious Island (1870), and La Tour du monde en quatre-vingt jours (1872). Beginning with A Trip to the Moon , by the pioneer French film director Georges Méliès, Verne's works have been the source of many films. He was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1892.

Chapter 1 In Which Phileas Fogg and Passepartout Accept Each Other, the One as Master, the Other as Man
Mr. Phileas Fogg lived, in 1872, at No.7, Saville Row, Burlington Gardens. He was one of the most noticeable members of the Reform Club, though he seemed always to avoid attracting attention. This Phileas Fogg was a puzzling gentleman, about whom little was known, except that he was a polished man of the world. People said that he resembled the poet Byron - at least that his head was Byronic; but he was a bearded, peaceful Byron, who might live on a thousand years without growing old. Certainly Phileas Fogg was an Englishman, but it was more doubtful whether he was a Londoner. He was never seen on 'Change, nor at the Bank, nor in the counting-rooms of the City ; no ships ever came into London docks of which he was the owner; he had no public employment; he had never been entered at any of the Inns of Court, either at the Temple, or Lincoln's Inn, or Gray's Inn. Nor had he ever pleaded in the Court of Chancery, or in the Exchequer, or the Queen's Bench, or the Ecclesiastical Courts. He certainly was not a manufacturer; nor was he a merchant or a gentleman farmer. His name was strange to the scientific and learned societies, and he never was known to take part in the sage deliberations of the Royal Institution or the London Institution, the Artisan's Association, or the Institution of Arts and Sciences. He belonged, in fact, to none of the numerous societies which swarm in the English capital.
