Contemporary full calf, red spine label gilt lettered, stamped decorative borders, chipped at spine head and tail, heavy rubbing to boards and edges, spine label incomplete, glue offsets to endpapers, light-moderate damp stains throughout with occasional foxing, overall a tight, good copy. $200. ¶ First Edition of the author’s study of English court procedures as they existed at the end of the 18th century. Barton (1768-1843), who published this work at the age of 28, was highly commended as a legal writer. "A useful historical treatise, admirable for its clear and judicious arrangement" (Blake). This text was widely read in America and seven editions were printed in Cincinnati between 1847 and 1909. Barton later wrote several extensive treatises on conveyancing. "The Killers" (1946) Born in New York City. The son of screenwriter - director - producer Bayard Veiller (c. 1869-1943) and actress Margaret Wycherly (1881-1956), he was a reporter, a theatre manager, and a publicist before entering films as a screenwriter and producer of Henry Hathaway's THE WITCHING HOUR (1934) at Paramount. Other screenwriting credits (alone or in collaboration) include SEVEN KEYS TO BALDPATE (1935), WINTERSET (1936), STAGE DOOR (1937), GUNGA DIN (uncredited contributing writer) and THEY SHALL HAVE MUSIC (both 1939), Frank Capra's "Why We Fight" series (1943-45), ADVENTURE (1945), THE STRANGER and THE KILLERS (both 1946), STATE OF THE UNION (1948, also assoc. producer), RED PLANET MARS (also producer) and MOULIN ROUGE (both 1952), THAT LADY (1955), SAFARI (1956), MONKEY ON MY BACK (1957), TIMBUKTU and SOLOMON AND SHEBA (both 1959), THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER (1963) and his last film, THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA (1964). In 1940, Veiller also began producing in earnest. Some of those notable films include TYPHOON, SAFARI, VICTORY, THE QUARTERBACK and MOON OVER BURMA (all 1940), NEW YORK TOWN (1941), COLORADO TERRITORY (1949), BACKFIRE, CHAIN LIGHTNING and DALLAS (all 1950) and ALONG THE GREAT DIVIDE, FORT WORTH and FORCE OF ARMS (all 1951).
