Hendrik Willem Van Loon was a Dutch-American historian and journalist. Born in Rotterdam , he came to the United States in 1903. He was a correspondent during the Russian revolutionary outbreak of 1905 and in Belgium in 1914 at the start of World War I . During the 1920s he wrote many books, most notably The Story of Mankind , a history of the world especially for children which won the first Newbery Medal in 1922. His other books include "The Fall of the Dutch Republic", "The Story of the Bible", "Tolerance", "America" and "R.V.R.: A Fictional Biography of Rembrandt ." Some would have it that children's literature is literature written specially for children, though many books that were originally intended for adults are now commonly thought of as works for children, for example Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper , or Huckleberry Finn . The opposite has also been known to occur, where works of fiction originally written or marketed for children are given recognition as adult books. Witness that in recent years, the prestigious Whitbread Awards were twice given to books marketed as children's books: Philip Pullman's

"Any frontal attack on ignorance is bound to fail because the masses are always ready to defend their most precious possession—their ignorance."
    – Hendrik Willem van Loon (1882–1944), Dutch American journalist Most UFO skeptics have a tendency to overlook or ignore much of the facts and evidence associated with UFOs. The following are a few of the important points:
    • In the 1970s the government denied any on-going investigation of UFOs; however, hundreds of documents later obtained through the Freedom of Information Act from the FBI, CIA, and a host of other government agencies, have proven this was not true. These documents show conclusively that many branches of the government have had ongoing UFO-related projects and investigations and have attempted to keep this information out of public awareness (Good, 1988; Knapp 1996).
    • Dr. J. Allen Hynek, astronomer and official debunker of UFOs for Project Blue Book (the Air Force's 1960s investigation into UFO sightings), later changed his position and wrote his own book stating that many UFO sightings cannot be explained in conventional terms, and apologizing for his role in Blue Book (Hynek, 1977).
