Research projects conducted by the RSC staff The research projects conducted by the RSC staff follow a cultural approach to American history and cover two main themes:
1. Dutch-American relations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries;
2. Political and cultural developments within the USA in the twentieth century; The first theme has been worked out in analyses of American diplomats in the Netherlands (1815-1850) and Dutch participants in American programs of cultural diplomacy (1948-1970). The attention has furthermore been focussed on the experiences of Dutch immigrants in the United States, both individually, in biographies of Dutch-American editor and philanthropist Edward W. Bok (1863-1930) and the Dutch-American historian and journalist Hendrik Willem van Loon (1882-1944), and collectively in publications about Dutch immigration to the United States (1846-1920). In addition, research has been done to explore the cultural differences and similarities in human resource management and research and development policies in Dutch-American corporations. The cultural approach in the second theme is visible in a reconstruction of the history of national health insurance in the U.S. which form a perspective of American exceptionalism. Even more explicitly cultural are the three studies that review the role magazines play in the formation of American society in the 1950s-1970s. The studies analyze

PROGRESS MADE VISIBLE
NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR, 1939
"Building the World of Tomorrow" was the motto of the last of the great American World's Fairs. One of the most popular American fairs, with its themes of unlimited progress through technology and an idealized American family offered hope to a society just emerging from the Depression and heading into a world war. Unfortunately, the idealism inherent in the concept of a World's Fair couldn't survive in the more cynical post-war world. Later Fairs were more overtly commercial and other forms of spectacle superseded family visit to the Fair. New York World's Fair.

BOX 1586; MANASSAS, VA 20108; 703-369-5017 www.giftededpress.com BOOK NEWS AND REVIEWS EXTRAORDINARY MINDS: PORTRAITS OF 4 EXCEPTIONAL INDIVIDUALS AND AN EXAMINATION OF OUR OWN EXTRAORDINARINESS BY HOWARD GARDNER (1997). BASIC BOOKS: NEW YORK. Although Gardner's work does not specifically focus on gifted education, his writings and insights have significant bearing on this field. In an age that judges the quality of ideas in terms of whether they meet superficial criteria related to political and statistical correctness, his current book offers a pleasant antidote to this situation. He argues for a science of extraordinariness and gives detailed examples of this concept from the lives of Sigmund Freud, Amadeus Mozart, Mahatma Gandhi, Virginia Woolf and many other extraordinary individuals. In the Preface Gardner says: "First, I have concluded that there are four distinct varieties of extraordinary minds. In this book, I seek to explicate the developmental origins and mature practices of the Master, the Maker, the Introspector, and the Influencer. Second, I am convinced that each of us harbors within ourselves the essential ingredients of these four kinds of minds. . . ." (pp. xi-xii). Gardner's work needs to be more widely studied and applied by professors and teachers. It is a mystery and an irony concerning why the ideas discussed in this and Gardner's other books are not more widely disseminated in the gifted field.
