Larry Marietta's Music Notes from Sunday Morning Services at FCCB
Sunday, November 9, 1997 THIS MORNING'S MUSIC While he was a guest preacher at Williams College in 1907, Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) penned the text for "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee." His son, Tertius, relates the story that his father "came down to breakfast one morning and placed the manuscript on the table before houseguest President James Garfield, saying: 'Here is a hymn for you. Your mountains (the Berkshires) were my inspiration. It must be sung to the music of Beethoven's Hymn to Joy .' " Of his text, Henry van Dyke writes: "These verses are simple expressions of common Christian feelings and desires in this present time, hymns of today that may be sung together by people who know the thought of the age, and are not afraid that any truth of science will destroy religion, or any revolution on earth overthrow the kingdom of heaven. Therefore this is a hymn of trust and joy and hope." The adaptation of Beethoven's famous melody from his Ninth Symphony for use as a hymntune was by Edward Hodges (1796-1867) of Bristol, England. Hodges emigrated to Canada and then to New York City, where he served as organist for St. John's Episcopal Church and Trinity Church, Wall Street. The text for "God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending" was written by Robert Lansing Edwards (b. 1915) for the Hymn Society of America's 1961 competition for stewardship hymns. It was one of ten winners and subsequently published in

Who does not like to feel inspired to achieve and develop more optimally? Writers of wisdom can motivate and encourage. Adversities occur and these need to be conquered through problem solving and perseverance, to the best possible. Opportunities in life come and go to reach upward and be of service to others. Each person needs to avail himself/herself of chances to be a member of society with a feeling of belonging as well as to have recognition needs met. Individuals desire to be known for positive achievements in education and in the societal arena. At teachers meetings and in selected journal articles, inspirational talks are in evidence. I believe these inspirational messages should be passed on more frequently. They may improve morale, be refreshing, and provide a needed change from the hustle, bustle, and work of classrooms and teaching. I have collected three messages of inspiration which provide feelings of relaxation and contentment.

He was so moved by the beauty of God's creation that he wrote this hymn of joy. The next morning he handed the poem to the college president. "Here is a hymn for you," he said. "Your mountains were my inspiration. It must be sung to the music of Beethoven's 'Hymn of Joy.'" And so it has been ever since.
