MY APRIL LADY by: Henry van Dyke (1852-1933)
    HEN down the stair at morning
    The sunbeams round her float,
    Sweet rivulets of laughter
    Are bubbling in her throat;
    The gladness of her greeting
    Is gold without alloy;
    And in the morning sunlight
    I think her name is Joy.
    When in the evening twilight
    The quiet book-room lies,
    We read the sad old ballads,
    While from her hidden eyes
    The tears are falling, falling,
    That give her heart relief;
    And in the evening twilight,
    I think her name is Grief.
    My little April lady,
    Of sunshine and of showers,
    She weaves the old spring magic,
    And breaks my heart in flowers!
    But when her moods are ended,
    She nestles like a dove;
    Then, by the pain and rapture,
    I know her name is Love.

ROBERT BROWNING by: Henry van Dyke (1852-1933)
    OW blind the toil that burrows like the mole,
    In winding graveyard pathways underground,
    For Browning's lineage! What if men have found
    Poor footmen or rich merchants on the roll
    Of his forbears? Did they beget his soul?
    Nay, for he came of ancestry renowned
    Through all the world, the poets laurel-crowned
    With wreaths from which the autumn takes no toll.
    The blazons on his coat-of-arms are these:
    The flaming sign of Shelley's heart on fire,
    The golden globe of Shakespeare's human stage,
    The staff and scrip of Chaucer's pilgrimage,
    The rose of Dante's deep, divine desire,
    The tragic mask of wise Euripides.

van Dyke, Henry 1873 (1852-1933) was called to Princeton in 1899 from the pastorate of New York's Brick Presbyterian Church to occupy a chair especially endowed for him by alumni and named for Dean Murray, who had preceded him as pastor of the Brick Church and as professor of English at Princeton. His younger brother, the historian Paul van Dyke 1881, had joined the faculty several years earlier, and the seniors welcomed Henry in the Faculty Song of 1900: ``Here's to Henry the brother of Paul.
He has a large head, but he's not very tall.'' Although ``not very tall,'' his carriage was erect, and his ``large head'' well-formed and handsome. Whether driving his Adirondack horses and smart trap to lecture hall in his early years or walking in academic procession in the scarlet gown of an honorary Oxford doctor of letters in later years, van Dyke was always a striking figure. Although he strongly opposed Woodrow Wilson's Quad Plan, Wilson never held this against him, and later appointed him Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg. He was one of the most popular lecturers in his time, and when he retired in 1923 the trustees congratulated him on having developed in his students ``an appreciation of the best in literature and a genuine love of reading.'' He was a prolific writer, producing more than fifty books of stories, essays, and verse. His Christmas story

Henry Jackson Van Dyke was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, to Henrietta Ashmead and Henry Jackson Van Dyke, a respected Presbyterian clergyman. The son was influenced by his father's role as minister, though the boy was not necessarily a model child. As his father said of his two sons, "Paul was born good, but Henry was saved by grace." In 1868 Van Dyke met Robert E. Lee, who gave him a ride on his horse, Traveller.
    Later in life he said the three men who had most influenced him were his father, General Lee, and ‘Alfred Tennyson’, and from that comment can be seen the keynotes of his life: the dedication to honour and beauty and the willingness to fight for a cause. He studied at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and received an M.A. from Princeton University in 1876. He was an ideal student, active in a myriad of extracurricular activities as well as his classes. Yet, not wishing to be considered a bookworm, Van Dyke often disguised how much he studied and was willing to involve himself in some youthful pranks. He included in his college scrapbook a poster offering a fifty-dollar "reward for the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons who took the gate and damaged the fences on the Seminary and Library grounds." In the margin is the note: "They didn't catch us. H.v.D."

Citaten Henry J. van Dyke (1852-1933) Time is too slow for those who wait,
too swift for those who fear,
too long for those who grieve,
too short for those who rejoice,
but for those who love, time is eternity. Use the talents you possess, for the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except the best. There is a loftier ambition than merely to stand high in the world. It is to stoop down and lift mankind a little higher. Individualism is a fatal poison. But individuality is the salt of common life. Henry van Dyke was presbyteriaans predikant in New York. Later hoogleraar Engelse taal- en letterkunde aan Princeton University en Amerikaans ambassadeur in Nederland. Gemeente in Lokhorst, januari 2004
