Museum staff will lead a tour of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, N.M. on Jan. 23-24. Participants can travel 2,000 feet underground to see salt beds that will permanently store low-level radioactive waste from the nation's nuclear weapons facilities. The tour also includes a visit to the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell. The cost of the tour is $165. Atomic Testing Museum
The Nevada Test Site (NTS) constitutes an important chapter in the history of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Even though the two locations are separated by hundreds of miles, they are intertwined by their mission to develop the nation's nuclear deterrent. A new museum, dedicated to preserving the legacy of the NTS, is now open in Las Vegas. The permanent exhibits won't be ready until late 2004. But LLNL got a preview tour, and a chance to talk about the history of the period, with Cold War veterans from both sides of the Iron Curtain. From Fodors.com: In order to be more accessible, this popular attraction has moved from the heavily restricted Kirtland Air Force Base to Old Town. Exhibits include replicas of Little Boy and Fat Man (the bombs dropped on Japan at the end of World War II), and there are children's programs and an exhibit about X-ray technology. The museum plans to mount more exhibits on the nonweapons applications of nuclear technology, such as nuclear medicine and nuclear power. In 2005 or 2006, the museum is set to change its name to the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History and to move to Balloon Fiesta Park north of town. www.atomicmuseum.com. $4. Daily 9-5. Pure fusion bombs (which omit the fission trigger) could also promote the spread of nuclear weapons. Why? Because fission fuel - highly-enriched uranium or plutonium is hard to make, and the production is easy to detect. Stephen Schwartz, publisher of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, says, "If fourth-generation nuclear weapons were ever to become a reality, that would truly be the death of arms control, would make it almost impossible to control nuclear weapons. The biggest constraint now is access to plutonium and highly-enriched uranium. If you didn't need those... it would become a much different proposition." Then there's the leak problem: secrets don't stay secret. David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security , writes, "The history of the spread of nuclear weapons includes many cases where countries gained access to secret information enabling them to accomplish the goal of making nuclear explosive materials or the weapons themselves."
