The National Atomic Museum
Kirtland Air Force Base
Albuquerque, NM
April 26th, 2001
On the outskirts of Albuquerque, NM, situated in the middle of Kirtland Air Force Base is a small museum dedicated to perhaps the most significant 30 seconds in the 20th century. Inside we found the story of the atomic age. The beginning was not a humble search for the comforts of humanity, nor the desire to improve man's life through the sciences. In 1939, in Germany, Hitler was not interested in humanity. He was bent on the destruction of the known world through conquest and war. So those scientists who had not fled the ravages of war were put to work to create the first Atomic bomb. In July of 1940, the Germans were ready to build their first sub-critical uranium pile (preliminary reactor). By 1941 the Germans were winning the race for an atom bomb. They had a heavy-water plant, high-grade uranium compounds, a nearly complete cyclotron, capable scientists and engineers, and the greatest chemical engineering industry in the world. By the time the US had entered the war, it had initiated its own program under the Manhattan Engineer District of the Army Corps of Engineers. By 1942 America knew they needed an atomic bomb faster then either Germany or Japan. General Leslie R. Groves was placed in charge and immediately created three remote construction sights. One at Oakridge, Tn., another at Hanford, WA., and the final one in a small crossroads in New Mexico called Los Alamos. The main experiments were conducted in a small laboratory beneath the University of Chicago's abandoned Stagg Field football

Nuclear Pioneers Event 2000 National Atomic Museum Albuquerque, NM
Minutes to Midnight; The Cuban Missile Crisis
October 11-12, 2000 The Third annual "Nuclear Pioneers" event focusing on the Cuban Missile Crisis. This year, the Museum's annual historical program series will examine this incredibly troubling time in world history. In the Fall of 1962, it is said that the world was never closer to nuclear war. During this Museum event specially selected individuals will share anecdotal accounts of their experiences during the days of the Missile Crisis. This annual event draws interest from national media, historians and film producers. The National Atomic Museum's large collection of nuclear weapons and weapon delivery systems includes those that were part of America's nuclear arsenal during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Largest airborne device (the Mk 17)
    Smallest devce (the Davy Crockett)
Though twenty years old this year, the more modern Full Fuzing Option (FFO) B-83. At 2,464 pounds, it could be carried down the street in a pickup truck or Iraqi "technical." (You don't need the casing, just the "physics package.") This is the kind of idea that rightly makes governments nervous. Yield is more than 1 megaton of TNT versus the 13,000 tons of little boy and 18,000 tons of fat man. The world has thousands of similar or better (smaller, lighter) devices in the nuclear-club countries US, France, UK, China, Russian Federation, Israel, South Africa, etc. Something to think about.
This is a very interesting museum and is close to several other museums (New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, Albuquerque Museum, Explora Children’s Museum) if you are in the museum mood. They have every available book on the history and development of the United States' Nuclear Weapons Complex and exhibits ranging from actual Fat Man and Little Boy pumpkins (empty cases)..

    Hours:
9 a.m to 5 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and Easter.
    Entry fee: None.
Directions: From Downtown Albuquerque drive east to Wyoming and then south to the Wyoming Gate at Kirtland Air Force Base. You'll have to stop at the guard post and receive a free pass to enter the base. The museum is about a mile beyond the gate. More information: National Atomic Museum, P.O. Box 5400, Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, N.M. 87115, Phone 505 845-6670. By Frank Zoretich Originally published as part of the "Cheap Thrills Adventure Club" in the Albuquerque Journal So far, only two cities have been destroyed by nuclear attack. Considering the possibilities - and anyone who every 'ducked-and-covered' beneath the flimsy shelter of a schoolroom desk has considered the possibilities - that 'only' has been the good news for years. At the National Atomic Museum, located behind the gates of Kirtland Air Force Base on the southeast edge of Albuquerque, interpretive exhibits and a sizable array of weaponry tell the story of "the complete history of U.S. nuclear developments." There's special emphasis, of course, on the role New Mexico played in World War II development of The Bomb:
