KYNF warns INEEL over 1 million gallons of radioactive waste
August, 2003
Jackson, WY - Keep Yellowstone Nuclear Free (KYNF) has warned the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho National Engineering Lab (INEEL) that it would strongly fight any effort to treat more than 1 million gallons of liquid radioactive waste through use of high-temperature thermal processes and those which produce high levels of toxic air emissions.
INEEL will choose from five potential technologies being considered to treat the radioactive waste. KYNF President Tom Patricelli warned officials from the DOE and INEEL that KYNF and Jackson residents would oppose any treatment technology that would expose the radioactive waste to extremely high temperatures and create significant off-gas emissions.
Commenting on the possibility that the DOE might choose to restart the New Waste Calcine Facility, which KYNF was instrumental in closing, Patricelli said "any effort to restart the Calciner would be met with the most stringent opposition. The Calciner is essentially an incinerator and I think the DOE knows how residents of this community feel about incineration."
KYNF also opposed direct vitrification, steam reformation, and direct evaporation because of the high temperature used to treat the waste and the danger of radioactive emissions being released into the air.

162. The First Nuclear Chain Reaction
Large excerpt from The First Reactor, published December, 1982 by the U.S Department of Energy. Discusses the first sustained nuclear chain reaction which occurred in 1942 at the University of Chicago.
http://hep.uchicago.edu/cp1.html
The First Pile
By Corbin Allardice and Edward R. Trapnell On December 2, 1942, man first initiated a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction, and controlled it. As those who witnessed the experiment became aware of what had happened, smiles spread over their faces and a quiet ripple of applause could be hear. It was a tribute to Enrico Fermi, Nobel Prize winner, to whom, more than to any other person, the success of the experiment was due. Fermi, born in Rome, Italy, on September 29, 1901, had been working with uranium for many years. In 1934 he bombarded uranium with neutrons and produced what appeared to be element 93 (uranium is element 92) and element 94. However, after closer examination it seemed as if nature had gone wild; several other elements were present, but none could be fitted into the periodic table near uranium where Fermi knew they should have fitted if they had been the transuranic elements 92 and 94. It was not until five years later that anyone, Fermi included, realized he had actually caused fission of the uranium and that these unexplained elements belonged back in the middle part of the periodic table. Fermi was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1938 for his work on transuranic elements. He and his family went to Sweden to receive the prize. The Italian Fascist press severely criticized him for not wearing a Fascist uniform and failing to give the Fascist salute when he received the award. The Fermis never returned to Italy.

Whitaker Experimentalists in high-energy physics are probing at the smallest scales of length to learn about the fundamental nature of elementary particles and the interactions between them. In addition they are performing precision tests of the standard model and searching for new physics beyond it. The goal of experimental astrophysics is to determine the nature of the universe through observations of radiation reaching the Earth from space. For further links to our research efforts, see:

Fossil Energy Education Activities
DOE's Office of Fossil Energy has had a longstanding commitment to the education of tomorrow's scientists and engineers. More than a quarter of a century ago, the Office established a coal research grant program specifically for student-professor research teams at the nation's universities. Our educational commitment expanded with a program to provide research and training grants to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other minority institutions. In 2000, a new fellowship program was inaugurated to bring promising minority students to DOE-Fossil Energy facilities for summer internships.

Approximately 1.5 million dollars worth of modern analytical laboratory equipment has been brought to the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center from a laboratory in Grand Junction, CO. Click on the link below for the full story and the latest WIPP news.
A Brief History About WIPP
The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, or WIPP, is the world's first underground repository licensed to safely and permanently dispose of transuranic radioactive waste left from the research and production of nuclear weapons. After more than 20 years of scientific study, public input, and regulatory struggles, WIPP began operations on March 26, 1999. Located in the remote Chihuahuan Desert of Southeastern New Mexico, project facilities include disposal rooms mined 2,150 feet underground in a 2,000-foot thick salt formation that has been stable for more than 200 million years. Transuranic waste is currently stored at sites nationwide.

Welcome to the CIAC Hoax Pages
Last modified: 05/10/04
You are the 15650464th visitor to the CIAC Internet Hoax and Chain Letter pages since February 1995. Interspersed among the junk mail and spam that fills our Internet e-mail boxes are dire warnings about devastating new viruses, Trojans that eat the heart out of your system, and malicious software that can steal the computer right off your desk. Added to that are messages about free money, children in trouble, and other items designed to grab you and get you to forward the message to everyone you know. Most all of these messages are hoaxes or chain letters. While hoaxes do not automatically infect systems like a virus or Trojan, they are still time consuming and costly to remove from all the systems where they exist. At CIAC, we find that we spend much more time de-bunking hoaxes than handling real virus and Trojan incidents. These pages describe some of the warnings, offers, and pleas for help that are filling our mailboxes, clogging our mailservers, and that generally do not have any basis in fact. In addition to describing hoaxes and chain letters found on the Internet, we will discuss how to
