Chronology Iraq Iraq is estimated to hold 115 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, and possibly much more undiscovered oil in unexplored areas of the country. Iraq also is estimated to contain at least 110 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The country is a focal point for regional and international security issues. GENERAL BACKGROUND In the aftermath of war in March and April 2003, Iraq now finds itself in a period of uncertainty and transition after more than three decades of Ba'ath party rule. The events of 2003 mark the latest upheaval which Iraq has faced in its recent history. During the 1980s and 1990s , for instance, Iraq experienced two major wars (Iran-Iraq and the Kuwait war of 1990/1), plus more than a decade of economic sanctions. As a result, the country's economy, infrastructure, environment, health care system, and other social indicators all deteriorated sharply.

Publications Renewable Energy Assessment and Development Program Please also see these documents: Analysis of Renewable Portfolio Options for Hawaii and Appendix 1: Update of Selected Cost and Performance Estimates The purpose of this project, also known as Project 3 of the Hawaii Energy Strategy (1995), was to produce a comprehensive assessment of Hawaii's renewable energy resources (wind, solar, biomass, hydroelectric, ocean thermal energy conversion [OTEC], geothermal, and wave energy) and a long-range development strategy. The project consisted of three parts, and produced three reports: Renewable Energy Resource Assessment Plan The report on Phase I summarized the activities involved in creating the resource assessment plan, including determining constraints and requirements, identifying potential project sites, analyzing existing utility infrastructure, identifying existing monitoring sites, and screening potential sites. New solar and wind monitoring sites were recommended and instrumented for collection of additional data. Development of Renewable Energy Resource Supply Curves The Phase II report compiled cost and performance data on current and future renewable energy conversion systems, analyzed and reduced existing data on available resources, and presented the renewable energy resource supply curves which were developed. A computer model was developed to allow comparison of cost information on renewable resources with various alternatives.
