Geothermal Topics
Geothermal energy technologies use the heat of the earth for direct-use applications, geothermal heat pumps, and electrical power production. Research in all areas of geothermal development is helping to lower costs and expand its use. In the United States, most geothermal resources are concentrated in the West, but geothermal heat pumps can be used nearly anywhere. More basic information about geothermal energy is also available
Technologies
Exploration
Geological, geochemical, and geophysical techniques are used to locate geothermal resources. Drilling
Drilling for geothermal resources has been adapted from the oil industry. Improved drill bits, slimhole drilling, advanced instruments, and other drilling technologies are under development. Direct Use
Geothermal hot water near the Earth's surface can be used directly for heating buildings and as a heat supply for a variety of commercial and industrial uses. Geothermal direct use is particularly favored for greenhouses and aquaculture. Geothermal Heat Pumps
Geothermal heat pumps, or ground-source heat pumps, use the relatively constant temperature of soil or surface water as a heat source and sink for a heat pump, which provides heating and cooling for buildings.

General Information
In November 2002, Estonia was one of seven nations invited to join NATO in 2004, and in December 2002, Estonia was one of the ten countries invited to membership in the major expansion of the European Union. Estonia has also been approved for membership in the World Trade Organization. Figure 1: Administrative Regions of Estonia
FOTW Flags of the World

Energy Policy and Regulation
In 2001, the Estonian Government began a phased-in liberalization of its electricity sector, so as to keep on track for its expected accession into the European Union. In January 2001, new electricity tariffs were established that will allow customers to choose their electricity supplier. In 2001, only the largest consumers those who use annually more than 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) were eligible. By the spring of 2002, all electricity users will be covered by this liberalization.
Energy Summary
Estonia is unique among nations in its heavy use of oil shale. Estonia produces no significant amounts of coal, oil, or natural gas. Natural gas and petroleum products are imported. There is also some use of peat and wood waste as fuel at small heating plants. There is a reserve of 929 million metric tons of peat. Small hydroelectric power plants serve some villages.

Human Genome Research
An Introduction The U.S. Human Genome Project (HGP), composed of the DOE and NIH Human Genome Programs, is the national coordinated effort to characterize all human genetic material by determining the complete sequence of the DNA in the human genome. The HGP's ultimate goal has been to discover all the more than 30,000 human genes and render them accessible for further biological study. To facilitate the future interpretation of human gene function, parallel studies have been carried out on selected model organisms. View timeline and history for background information on the project. The HGP will meet an ambitious schedule to complete the full sequence in 2003, two years ahead of previous projections. Technology available shortly after the start of the HGP in 1990 could have been used to attain HGP objectives, but the cost and time required would have been unacceptable. Because of this, a major emphasis of the project's early years was to optimize existing methods and develop new technologies to increase DNA mapping and sequencing efficiency by 10- to 20-fold. The genome was sequenced with technologies and methods that evolved over the past 10 years. In the course of completing the sequence, an interim "working draft" of the human sequence was produced and published in

Green Buildings Introduction Also visit U.S. DOE's Building Technologies Program. The design, construction, and maintenance of buildings has a tremendous impact on our environment and our natural resources. There are more than 76 million residential buildings and nearly 5 million commercial buildings in the U.S. today. These buildings together use one-third of all the energy consumed in the U.S., and two-thirds of all electricity. By the year 2010, another 38 million buildings are expected to be constructed. The challenge will be to build them smart, so they use a minimum of nonrenewable energy, produce a minimum of pollution, and cost a minimum of energy dollars, while increasing the comfort, health, and safety of the people who live and work in them. Traditional building practices often overlook the interrelationships between a building, its components, its surroundings, and its occupants. "Typical" buildings consume more of our resources than necessary, negatively impact the environment, and generate a large amount of waste. According to Laurence Doxsey, former Coordinator of the City of Austin Green Builder Program, "a standard wood-framed home consumes over one acre of forest and the waste created during construction averages from 3 to 7 tons." Often, these buildings are costly to operate in terms of energy and water consumption. And they can result in poor indoor air quality, which can lead to health problems.

18. DOE Appliance Standards: Clothes Washer Certification Information
Discusses minimum efficiency standards and operation costs of residential washing machines.
http://www.eere.energy.gov/buildings/appliance_standards/residential/clwash_cert
Clothes Washer Certification Information
Why Clothes Washer Standards?
The Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) sets forth an energy conservation program for certain appliances. These appliances are required to be tested in accordance with Federal test procedures to meet mandated efficiency standards. These test procedures can be found in the current U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR, Title 10, Part 430). The CFR also identifies the individual standards, which specify a minimum level of energy efficiency or a maximum level of energy use for regulated appliances. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Codes and Standards (OCS) is responsible for developing and periodically updating these standards, as well as monitoring compliance with the standards.
What Should be Submitted to Show Compliance with Standards
Before any clothes washers can be distributed into commerce in the United States, specific compliance information must first be submitted. Compliance information consists of a statement of compliance and a certification report. Collectively, these documents certify that each clothes washer basic model meets the applicable energy conservation standard. A basic model refers to all units manufactured by one manufacturer which have the same primary energy source, which have essentially identical electrical characteristics and which do not have any differing physical or functional characteristics that affect energy consumption. By following the sample formats of compliance statement and the certification report provided in this brief, compliance requirements under the applicable standards will be considered adequately met.

B egun in 1990, the U.S. Human Genome Project is a 13-year effort coordinated by the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. The project originally was planned to last 15 years, but effective resource and technological advances have accelerated the completion date to 2003. Project goals were to
  • identify all the approximately 30,000 genes in human DNA,
  • determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA
