Having lost three-fourths of its starters from its past title teams, rugby’s reigning king entered the season’s final tournament as only a sixth-seed. In its place at the top was the Texas Stampede, whose lineup was bolstered by Boston-boy Bob Boothby and the “Kiwi Fruit” from New Zealand, Jeremy Tinker. Although undefeated with its current starting line, Texas hadn’t played many of the league’s top teams during the season.

Soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division’s 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, stepped in a few months ago to fix that problem. During Saddam Hussein's reign the villagers were neglected by the government and denied clean water. Once the Coalition ousted Hussein's notorious Ba'ath Party, village leaders sought help. Until now, the villagers have been hauling buckets of cooking, bathing and drinking water from the Euphrates River and irrigation canals. Both sources are very polluted, causing illness and birth defects. The Soldiers are working to change the situation through construction of new water purification and distribution sites.
