Childhood: John Tyndall was born on August 2nd 1820, into a small landowning family in Leighlinbridge , Co.Carlow. Plaque commemorating Tyndall on a wall near his house in Leighlinbridge Although his family was quite poor, Tyndall got a good education. He became good friends with Master Conwill at Ballinabranna School, when he was in his teens. The two could often be seen, on their walks home to Leighlinbridge, figuring out some geometrical problems in the snow. The house in Leighlinbridge where John Tyndall was born in 1820 Tyndall originally started working as a draughtsman with the Ordnance Survey, studying in his leisure time. In 1847, he became a teacher of mathematics at Queenswood College, Hampshire, England. Then at the age of 28 he went to the University of Marburg in Germany to study Chemistry and Physics. In 1850 he obtained his Phd there, and returned to Queenswood a year later.

John Tyndall (1820 –1893) Tyndall was born in County Carlow in 1820 and studied at Marburg, Germany. He became professor of Physics at the Royal Institution 1853 and was also professor at the Royal School of Mines 1859–68 He was one of the first people to communicate science to non scientific audiences in Great Britain and in America. In 1869 he studied the scattering of light by invisibly small suspended particles in colloids. The effect was named after him the Tyndall effect , it was first observed with colloidal solutions, in which a beam of light is made visible when it is scattered by minute colloidal particles (whereas a pure solvent does not scatter light). Similar scattering of blue wavelengths of sunlight by particles in the atmosphere makes the sky look blue (beyond the atmosphere, the sky is black). As well as showing that air contains dust particles, Tyndall also showed that it contains micro-organisms. This confirmed the work of French chemist Louis P, and it also inspired Tyndall to develop methods of sterilizing by heat treatment.

What is new and different about the Tyndall Centre? top The Tyndall Centre's role is to develop and pioneer ways of responding to the challenge of climate change in a positive, constructive and effective manner.
The Tyndall Centre itself is a unique partnership between nine UK research institutions which together form the Tyndall Consortium . This framework allows for the engineering and technological sciences to combine with the environmental and social sciences and together build a connected and productive interdisciplinary pool of world-class expertise. This is reflected in the Centre's research strategy which is focused on adopting integrated approaches drawn from the natural, social and engineering sciences to deliver new insights into climate change, and to explore and develop sustainable responses to climate change. In doing so, the Tyndall Centre seeks a wide engagement with stakeholders and also participate in education and opinion-shaping.

Outlined below is a selection of just some of the many Irish contributors to the world of science and innovation.
Barry , Vincent (1908 - 1975)
Cork man Vincent Barry led a medical research team that discovered a compound (B663) that ultimately led to a treatment for leprosy. The team were working on a cure for tuberculosis at the time. Beaufort , Sir Francis (1774 - 1857)
In 1805 Navan man, Sir Francis Beaufort, conceived the wind force scale that now bears his name. A distinguished naval commander, Sir Francis' 13-point 'Beaufort Scale' was adopted by the British navy in 1838. Boyle , Robert (1627 - 1691) Robert Boyle, one of the original modern chemists, made many key contributions in the scientific revolution of the 1600's. His most famous discovery, which examined the pressure-volume relationship in laboratory conditions, now bears his name (Boyle's Law) and was to prove fundamental to our understanding of gases and atmospheric pressure.

Rayleigh, see Rayl ; John Tyndall, 1820–1893, Irish physicist), backscattering of ultrasound from blood. The echoes detected from blood (e.g. in Doppler ultrasound ) are created through interference between scattered wavelets from numerous point scatterers (small inhomogeneities in the red blood cell concentration, see point scatterer ). The intensity of the backscattered echoes is proportional to the total number of scatterers, which means that the echo amplitude is proportional to the square root of the total number of scatterers (see intensity of sound ). At normal blood flow, the number of point scatterers in blood is proportional to the number of red blood cells (i.e. the amount of blood). When blood flow is turbulent, or accelerating fast (e.g. in a stenosis), the number of inhomogeneities in the red blood cell concentration will increase, thus giving rise to stronger echoes than can be accounted for by merely the amount of blood. The intensity of the backscattered ultrasound is also proportional to the fourth power of ultrasound frequency. Doubling the ultrasonic frequency makes the echoes from blood 16 times as strong. (On the other hand, higher frequency ultrasound suffers from higher attenuation in the tissues.)

not the actual total number of referrals ; I believe the system used here is more fairly reflective of the relative attention given each person overall in Wallace's writings because it doesn't put undue weight on long works that contain a very large number of mentions of a particular person. The following individuals scored a '20' or higher on this scale, ranked in order. Darwin, Charles [English naturalist 1809-1882]. This total clearly indicates what a tremendous debt Wallace's work owed to Darwin, whether Wallace agreed with him all the time or not.

[English philosopher and sociologist 1820-1903]. Wallace had genuine admiration for Spencer's abilities as a thinker, though later on in their careers he came to feel that Spencer had lost his direction.
