Mark Twain (1835-1910)
Article # : Section : BOOK WORLD Issue Date : 552 Words Author : James Thompson
Mark Twain needs no defenders; his works speak for themselvesat least to people who have ears and will listen. Far from "racist trash," his most famous novel stripped the slave regime of the respectability it craved and debunked the warped thinking that buttressed the system. Twain made his sentiments clear in his nonfiction as well. In "The United States of Lyncherdom," for example, he excoriated the fomenters of racial violence, and in "A True Story, Repeated Word for Word as I Heard It," he limned the afflictions of slavery with a poignance and immediacy that Harriet Beecher Stowe might have envied.
In the works of his last years, most of which remained unpublished before he died, Twain spat his rage at God, man, and the creation itself. In his Autobiography, for example, he left no score unsettled, no animosity unmentioned, no sore spot unfingered. It is noteworthy that blacks, both as individuals and as a race, escaped this condemnation from the grave. Twain averred that as a child he had acquired a "strong liking" for the "Negro race" and "an appreciation of certain of its fine qualities." Neither the wounds of experience nor the irritations of advancing years soured this outlook. Near the end of his days, he declared that "the black face is as welcome to me now as it was" in his boyhood.

Book Review: My Brother's Keeper
Although the intended scope of this memoir was never fully realized, "My Brother's Keeper" offers a unique perspective on James Joyce. For many years, Stanislaus Joyce shared friends, books, misadventures, and a few triumphs. All along, Stanislaus was in his brother's shadow, as James Joyce continued to develop his literary genius. With this memoir, Stanislaus stands out from behind his brother's legacy, as he sheds light on those early days in Ireland. And, while he's at it, Stanislaus creates his own lasting legacy in words. Ever The Twain Shall Meet
Mark Twain on the Web
It's not really all that rare for a person to have insights on what makes this species tick and have those insights stand up to the harsh tests of history. What is rare, in my mind, is for those insights to remain vital, relevant, and funny a century later. I won't bore you with why I think this is. I'm not sure I could, anyway. There are scholars, far better equipped than I, to make this case, and I will leave that to them. My interest is to see Twain's writings available to the Web and to let you judge for yourself.
