s="na";c="na";j="na";f=""+escape(document.referrer) The Significance of the Frontier in American History (1893) Frederick Jackson Turner (1861-1932) was an American historian who developed the theory that American history is based on the influence of the frontier. Turner believed that it was the frontier mentality of settlers which determined the characteristics of American people and their democratic institutions. This interpretation of American history represented a significant break from traditional interpretations which emphasised the importance of the European origins of the American character and American institutions Read the following excerpt from Frederick Jackson Turner, The Significance of the Frontier in American History (1893) and answer this question: This passage about the effect of the frontier on Americans was written in 1893, three years after the American frontier was officially declared closed. In the second sentence, Turner describes various characteristics of Americans which he says are connected to the fact that the United States had always been a frontier society. Explain, in your own words, why these characteristics would be the result of the frontier experience.

Teacher's Guide Language Arts
Listed below are examples of classroom exercises for educators to use with their students during the United We Read community-wide reading campaign. Journalism
  • Organize a class into groups and have each group produce a newspaper from Holt, Kansas reporting on local events
    a. Obituaries
    b. Profiles of members of the community
    c. Gossip
    d. Farm News
    e. High School News

  • Create a graphic novel of the book. Poetry
  • Have your students write a poem about one of the characters in the novel. The poem could be about the character's actions in the novel, or a poem that describes the character.
  • Students could write a sonnet about Plainsong , or a haiku about a character.
  • Have your students write a poem about the Plains. Short Stories A good project for students might be rewriting the ending of the book. If one character made a different choice than was written how would that affect the ending of the novel? Also a classroom discussion of choices versus outcomes would be great for students after they have completed a written activity. Speech Select issues from the novel, e.g. bullying, teen pregnancy, mental illness, single parent families, aging, and make speeches about the issue which relate to the book dealing with the same subject. Students could discuss how to solve those problems vis-à-vis the characters and how to get assistance for these issues in their own communities.

    Towards a Biblical Creation-Based Historiography
    Ellen Myers
The great German historian Leopold von Ranke (1796-1886) defined history as ideally the account of that which actually happened in the past. The goal of the historian would be therefore be to investigate and then to describe as accurately, thoroughly and impartially as possible the true course of historical events based on the "purest, most immediate documents."1 Ranke was the father of modern historical scholarship in that he sought to make the study of history a separate, autonomous academic discipline. While his ideal was that of a universal history spanning all times, nations and men, he also taught that "(e)ach event was unique and had to be understood as a discrete phenomenon, each period 'was immediate to God,' who had fashioned it. The historian must treat each period with unswerving impartiality."2 At the university of Berlin Ranke taught two generations of historians his historical philosophy, method, and also the critical study of historical sources (QuelIenkritik). His best-known works include The History of the Popes and German History in the Time of the Reformation. significantly dealing with topics of particular historical interest to Christians. Ranke's conception of history is still thankfully the dominant school of historiography today, despite a kind of "higher criticism" from later historians of various persuasions. Thus we have outright "party" historiographies of the Nazi and Soviet variety, which select and bend the facts found in primary sources (or even falsify the primary sources) to fit the Procrustean bed of their respective ideologies. An example is the effort by modern Soviet historians to construct a history of the development of Russian industry in line with Karl Marx's historical stages based on economic class war (which actual Russian economic history does not substantiate). Another example is that of Frederick Jackson Turner (1861-1932), author of the "frontier theory" of American history. Turner based his theory

    Scholars Select Most Influential Books
[Under Construction] The following table lists the selections by the following:
"Savants Select Most Influential Volumes," English Journal 25 (1936). [25 selections each by Edward Weeks, editor of the Atlantic Monthly Press ; Charles A. Beard, historian; John Dewey, philosopher]
Malcolm Cowley and Bernard Smith, Books That Changed Our Minds (1939). [12 selections]
Horace Shipp, Books That Moved the World (1945). [10 selections]
Robert B. Downs, Books That Changed the World (1956) [16 selections] Note: Some of these lists were compiled with restrictions. Dewey, Weeks, and Beard were asked to "select the twenty-five most influential books published in the last fifty years." This means between 1874 and 1936. Downs, on the other hand, writes, "For practical reasons, it was arbitrarily decided to restrict the discussion to books in science and the social sciences, omitting such vastly important fields as religion, philosophy, and literature." Location: Downtown Pardeeville on Highway 22 Built in 1909, adjacent to Pardeeville's railroad depot, the Belmont Hotel served travelers from the six daily trains that passed through the village at the time. The three-story Belmont Hotel is constructed of concrete block and is the most prominent example of Pardeeville's concrete block commercial buildings. In 1973, Mrs. Myrtle Listner-Spear donated the 32 room building to the Columbia County Historical Society for use as a museum. The Belmont Hotel was listed in the National register of Historic Places in 1973. Erected 1999
    Historic Pardeeville
Location: Downtown Pardeeville on Highway 22 In 1848, New York native and Milwaukee merchant, John S. Pardee hired agents to oversee his Fox River land holdings and to establish business operations from this location. Yates Ashley, the most notable of Pardee's agents, managed the on-site operations and surveyed and platted the town in 1850. Although railroad tracks were laid here 1857, real growth did not begin until after the 1870s. By 1889, Pardeeville boasted of two hotels, a flour mill, a grain elevator, a creamery, several potato warehouses, a lumber yard and a bank.
