MÉNAGE À QUATRE GOUNOD (CHARLES FRANÇOIS, 1818-1893, French composer ) and TURGENEV (IVAN SERGEEVICH, 1818-1883, Russian novelist 4 pages, octavo, one very slight small stain, mounted and contained in a fine modern maroon morocco binding, oblong folio, [Paris], 2 April 1850 The legendary mezzo-soprano, Pauline Viardot (1821-1910), conventionally plain but sultry and charismatically attractive, who spoke and wrote in five languages and was a noted intellectual, had a voice that Saint-Saëns described as 'more superhuman than human'. She was married to Louis Viardot, director of the Opéra Italien in Paris, and twenty-one years her senior. Turgenev first met her in 1843 and immediately fell in love 'with unquestioning, submissive and undemanding devotion' until his death forty years later, living much of the time in her house at Courtavenel and an apartment separated off for him in her house in Paris. There is some evidence that they may have been lovers for a brief period. Gounod first met Pauline in Rome just after her marriage, but became her great admirer in 1849 when composing his opera Sappho with a part for her. He was soon an intimate of the Viardot household and came to live at Courtavenel as well. 'Malicious tongues suggested that the triangle had become a square' although the precise nature of the relationships has never been fully clarified but rumours abounded.

Customer Reviews excellent russian literaturethis book is a treasure for the letters includedparticularly those he wrote to tolstoy Everybody should read some Turgenev. He was the man whom made the world outside Russia aware of that the great Russian literature existed. And he has inspired great western authors too, like Guy de Maupassant (whom in his turn inspired Chekhov), Henry James, Ernest Hemingway (whom again also admired Chekhov and Maupassant). By reading Turgenev today, one will find that his writing still is astonishingly modern and will continue to have influence on new generations of writers. Turgenev was one of the greatest and all of his tales are imbued with his unique feeling for the texture and dignity of all human in life. “Father Alexyei’s Story” is on the grim side, certainly. It lacks the assumptions and trappings of Western supernatural fiction, so that none of the characters are really surprised at the appearance of the green man or of the actions of the devil. Like some of the other stories on this site, it reads more like folklore than anything else, a story about a man who succumbed to temptation. And so your enjoyment of it will depend on how much you enjoy reading folktales. Alexyei was innocent, really. He just couldn’t resist the devil. It all comes of speaking to strange green men, which I heartily recommend you all avoid doing. an Ziqiong . Yan Ziqiong was created by Li Ruzhen (or "Li Ju-chen") and appeared in Jinghua Yuan (Flowers in a Mirror, c. 1820). Li (1763-1830) was a failed scholar who was supported by his older brother and pursued a variety of interests as a dilettante scholar. He wrote Flowers in a Mirror as a historical novel exposing the cruelties of T'ang (and Qing) Dynasty China and as an allegory of the human condition, trapped between the base and the spiritual. (In the West, this impulse produced Zola and the Naturalists. In China, this produced wuxia ). The novel, though quite similar to an earlier novel (
