New Thought: Linking New Age and Process Thought
Alan Anderson
Presented at the Center for Process Studies Silver Anniversary International Whitehead Conference
Claremont, California, August 6, 1998 Introduction Most people today are familiar with the term New Age , whereas rather few know the term New Thought . New Thought is the older movement. New Thought actually has served as a cradle for New Age to a large extent, and New Thought principles underlie much of popular religion and most American success literature from the late nineteenth century to the present. Still, people constantly confuse the two, especially since the term New Thought is so comparatively little known at present. But New Thought's influence is as prevalent as its name is not. Although society is more than ever in need of what it has to offer, New Thought's substance metaphysical underpinnings, largely shared with New Age, are sorely in need of improvement. Hence we have the beginnings of Process New Thought, which combines process thinking with traditional New Thought techniques, and has sufficient power to assure New Thought's rightful place as the heart and soul of the new age (without capital letters). It is obvious that this would serve as a valuable link between New Age and process thought. Part of this linking has begun as a result of the publication of New Thought: A Practical American Spirituality , which popularizes and simplifies process thought, for example in the "creativity formula": Past + Divine Offer + Choice = Co-Creation.

THE NEW THOUGHT MOVEMENT: A LINK BETWEEN EAST AND WEST
Delivered at the Parliament of the World's Religions
Chicago, September 3, 1993 Alan Anderson
Curry College 1. Introduction In coming up with the title for this talk, "The New Thought Movement: A Link between East and West," I sought to emphasize the constructive joining of Eastern and Western thought. A better symbol than "link" might be "bridge." Eastern and Western gardens alike frequently feature bridges that allow one to pass from a near, familiar portion of the landscape to a more remote, perhaps less explored realm. So it is with the philosophical-religious movement known as New Thought. Although New Thought is of Western origin, it absorbed strong Eastern influences that continue to this day. Therefore, New Thought is well-suited as a bridge to assist the traveler in passing easily from one realm of thought to the other. Good neighbors might well join their respective gardens with a bridge allowing them to visit and return home. Both gain additional territory to explore without loss of their original holdings. This talk is not an exhaustive exploration of the relationship of New Thought and Eastern thought. It is, rather, a relatively brief taking note of some of these connections. It is largely historical; but, of greater significance, it is a step in an exploration of how New Thought and some aspects of Eastern thought might fit into a larger pattern of thinking, which might lead to a universal theology or philosophy.

31. The Sources Of What Became New Thought Are Certainly Far Reaching

http://www.newthoughtcrs.org/NewThoughtMovement/Senior Paper The New Thought Mov
Introduction The New Thought Movement began in late 19 th and early 20 th st and 2 nd centuries. To do this the paper will be structured into three distinct sections: First, a summary of the sources of New Thought, in order to understand the evolution of its ideas into its present state. Secondly, an analysis and explanation of New Thought's theology and christology with an ongoing comparison to traditional Christian concepts. And the third section will compare New Thoughts theology and christology to Christian thought in the 1 st and 2 nd centuries. This paper is not claiming any direct connection to the sources of early Christianity. It is claiming a striking precedent though, which I believe draws a much more interesting conclusion, then any direct connection could. I Sources The sources of what became New Thought are certainly far reaching. But, as in any study, a beginning must be defined without being too far fetched in showing a clear progression of ideas and beliefs. This study of the sources of New Thought begins with Franz Anton Mesmer.

Edgar Cayce's Secret, Part 11
E. The Metaphysical movement The Metaphysical movement is traditionally conceived as encompassing Phineas Quimby, Christian Science, and the various New Thought churches. However, the influence of Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), whose writings predate them all, is an inescapable part of the movement. Under neo-Platonist and Swedenborgian inspiration, Emerson (a lapsed Unitarian minister) taught an "idealistic", "Transcendentalist" worldview (both names were then in current use in German philosophy in the wake of Kant and Hegel) in which spirit or mind enjoys primacy over the world of matter or appearance.(206) Emerson also taught the existence of the "over-soul" (in the eponymous essay), a universal level underlying and uniting all human minds, a concept which seems to have been inspired by the neo-Platonic anima mundi in combination with the Upanishadic Brahman. Other important themes include Emerson's exaltation of nature as divine (or a reflection of the divine), (207) and his admiration of Asian religions. In the late nineteenth century, Emerson's writings were highly influential. so much so that even very moderately educated Americans could hardly have avoided his ideas. However. Emerson did not attempt to use his philosophy to heal people of their diseases or help them solve other types of problems, as the Metaphysicians were famous for doing. The Metaphysical movement is more usually traced to Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802-1866), who worked as a Maine clockmaker before becoming a metaphysical healer. Quimby began his career by magnetizing one Lucius Burkmar and instructing him psychically to diagnose illnesses, much like Cayce a century later (or Victor with de Puysegur earlier). Later Quimby discovered that he could direct Burkmar silently, through mental commands. So far Quimby's approach differed little from that of other Mesmenists. By 1862, however, Quimby realized that the specifics of Burkmar's prescriptions were not the cause of the patient's recovery-since

A great book about a funny coyote! I like it because when the Coyote meets some birds he wants to fly with, all the birds give him one of their right feathers, but he didn't balance. So they each gave him left feathers, but he still didn't balance. And the reason he didn't balance was because he needed one left feather and one right feather. - AMD, Age 7. A Good Walk, Ruined The adventures of Dashiell Hammett's retired private eye Nick Charles and his rich, and not-quite-as-ditzy-as-you'd-think wife could be called the American equivalent of the mysteries of New Scotland Yard Commissioner of Police Sir John Appleby and his wife, Lady Judithalthough the latter doesn't have an ounce of ditz in her personality. However, she does occasionally reveal a playful side to her husband. At the beginning of "The Crabtree Affair," the reader finds Sir John and his wife strolling along a disused canal, one fine English summer day. They indulge in affectionately ironic conversation, making it obvious that theirs is a long-standing marriage (although as I remember, they also talked that way to each other before marriage-see "Appleby's End").

This book is just mind blowing. I read it while taking a "History of Witchcraft" class in college. Anyone interested in animal rights, the tyranny of the courts and the solopsistic nature of "civilized" religion will be intrigued. It will make you seriously question the current practice of putting to death circus elephants who run amok, or pit bills who kill children. Very chilling to think that we have not, in some basic sense, escaped our mediaeval antecedents. Written in 1906, the text is a bit footnote-stodgy scholarly, but Evans brings the thoughts of philosophers, religious reasoners, and scientific pundits to bear on Europe's animal trials and how these slaughtered sparrows, garetted geese, and hung horses helped humans distinguish themselves from the animals. Of those original forerunners, the pathfinders and mapmakers were crucial, for without their vision, expertise and labors, new arrivals would have never found their way into the future and promise of uncharted frontiers. In the world of holistic health, healing, touch therapies and alternative medicine, a vast terrain has been opened, new ground has been taken and diverse grassroots efforts have grown and flourished. However, for others to find or follow the trails blazed by the ancient and modern pioneers in the healing arts, a guide, a map, was needed.
