Most of the time he felt impatience with people who wanted to take his picture. He disliked photography: 'I hate very much indeed I have written a book recording how a group of people responded in cyberspace to a few of Trollope's books interwoven with essays by myself on the topics related to, and autobiographical, historical, and critical frameworks for, the books discussed. It seems to me appropriate that Trollope has become a novelist explored in an arena open to those who can get into the World Wide Web through a computer terminal somewhere on this earth. A voracious reader, he never went to university, and when he wrote a lively, intelligent and readable book on Cicero, he was laughed at by the learned. Like many an essentially unconventional man and successful writer, since his death he has been misunderstood and misappropriated. On my site I have put as much information and analysis in an easily readable format as I can about Trollope's life and works and helpful books about him and his milieu. I have also included threads from various group reads on Trollope-l as samples of what may be found as a reader in Trollope's books. I invite people who come to my site to use any or all of the following materials to begin or to continue a discovery or research of their own, and I ask that anyone who does quote or use any of it credit my site in the conventional manner (e.g., MLA style).

Anthony Trollope (1815-1882)
The future novelist was born in London of an unsuccessful father who finished by going bankrupt and a literary mother, the author of many popular novels. Trollope attended school at Harrow, was then clerk in the General Post Office and in 1841 was transferred to Ireland. His early novels were barely noticed, but his tales of seemingly uneventful provincial life centering round the imaginary town of Barchester proved to have a wide appeal to the public. They are still read as truthful, straightforward narratives, which, though deficient in depth and critical acumen, are based on sound knowledge of manners and customs as well as on a vast fund of psychological observation. The Warden (1855), Barchester Towers (1857), Doctor Thome (1858), Fratnky Parsonage (1861), The Smalt House of Allington (1864), The Last Chronicle of Barset (1867) are realistic studies of convincing characters shaped by shrewdly assessed surroundings. In 1859 Trollope returned to London where he was active both in politics and in literature. With Can You Forgive Her (1865) and Phineas Finn (1869) he started a long series of political novels, revealing his capacity for cool and detached analysis of motives and emotional entanglements.

"And above all things, never think that you're not good enough yourself. A man should never think that. My belief is that in life people will take you at your own reckoning." The son of Thomas Anthony Trollope, a lawyer, and of Frances Trollope, a prolific writer herself, Anthony Trollope was born in London in 1815. As a child, Trollope was not particularly happy. A major factor in this was his father insistence upon sending him and his two brothers - Thomas Adolphus and Henry - to public school, despite the fact that he lacked sufficient finances to support them properly. They were the brunt of much teasing on account of their poverty. Firstly, Trollope attended Harrow School, later transferring to Winchester. However, he showed little academic promise during his time at either and, unlike his two brothers who continued their studies at Oxford and Cambridge, he was unable to obtain the scholarships he would have needed to support himself through university. Shortly after leaving school Trollope moved to Brussels to teach, but he remained there only a short while as with his father's help he was able to obtain a position as a junior clerk at the Post Office in London, a job which gave him little satisfaction. However, he was given the chance to take a job with the Post Office in Ireland as an administrator, a post in which he exhibited considerable ability. At this point in his life, Trollope experienced for the first time not only success in his work, but also began his literary career.

Anthony Trollope
Novelist
The great Victorian writer has a short but significant Belfast connection. A full-time official of the Post Office, in the autumn of 1853 he took up the post of Surveyor for the entire northern half of Ireland, working from the newly-built Custom House in Belfast. He was already the author of three unsuccessful novels, but found his true voice in the city, with The Warden (which was almost all written there), the first novel in his great Barsetshire series (including, of course, Barchester Towers). Trollope spent much of his time on horseback, covering his vast territory, but when he was in Belfast his office in the Custom House is believed to have been behind the two first-floor windows to the extreme right of the south-facing (right) facade.
Location of plaque: Under the balustrade on the west side of the Custom House, to the right of the steps.
