W hat we eat where it comes from, how it is raised, processed, cooked affects our health in many ways. Traditional native diets in those few places in the world where people still mostly eat what they raise, hunt, gather, fish have been found to promote health and long life, for reasons only gradually coming to be understood. I t isn't practical to recommend now for most of us that we eat buffalo, harvest wild rice, farm corn in single hills, gather waupatoo or teepsinna. We'll see why those traditional foods are health-promoting as modern biological and medical sciences have belatedly learned. We'll see practical ways to improve health by food and diet starting when you are young to eat well to avoid health problems later. Cultural food stories and practical recipes are here too. InfoSeek Select Site for this Traditional Foods section. It's always nice to be appreciated. I really put in a lot of work on this section the recipes take quite a while to type and index-link. I have lots of fun with this food section. But I think it's appropriate to point out at the start of info for fun (good eating) and health that some Native people youth and elders especially are going to be affected to the point of malnutrition, hunger, and serious health problems due to the political direction the U.S. is taking. Here's a couple of brief statements from Native leaders about that. I hope you will take the time to read and think about them, if you are not Indian, but just interested in our culture or our foods and recipes. Indian people (U.S.) already know, and are worrying.

What is Witchcraft? Witchcraft is the continuation of the native cultural beliefs and practices of the ancient Europeans as they continued to be passed down and followed, generation after generation, after the advent of Christianity. Witchcraft is the name that was given to these practices by the Catholic Church and was not the name by which those who followed these beliefs and practices originally called their religion.

is that everyone has the right to their own beliefs. We believe that people, regardless of their religion, should understand their chosen religion and why they believe as they do. Today, far too many people are ignorant of their religion and rely on poorly documented books and authors to instruct them on what they claim to be their beliefs. The information and questions contained in this website will hopefully help those who truly seek to learn, to question their own religious paradigm. The key element to ANY religion is to truly understand your beliefs.

Reader Question - Abakua societies
Reader Val asks:
I was wondering if you had any information about the Cuban religion Abakua. I have searched the internet inside and out to find any information on this religion and have had no luck. They are a secret men's society and it originates back to Africa, I do know that much. But I would like to know how one becomes part of the religion, the basic history, what the religion worships. Things like that. I do know a few words related such as arara...possibly a saint nanigo are "priests" that are higher up...and naniguismo. Beyond that I am stuck and frustrated. Would you be able to find ANY information on this for me?

A Traditional sport in Senegal features its history and style.
http://www.earth2000.com/ho/wrest.html
TRADITIONAL WRESTLING: LAAMB
Traditional wrestling, also known as "Laamb" in Wolof, is a centuries-old sport in Sénégal. In terms of form, it's more usually compared to the Greco-Roman style of wrestling; however, it is very typical of traditional, African wrestling. There are two forms of Laamb: the first allows the wrestlers to strike each other with their bare hands, which can be painful; the second is more acrobatic, and hitting is not permitted. When a wrestler's back touches the ground, the bout is over; he has lost. Laamb is as much a spiritual activity as it is physical; and wrestlers engage in various rites and rituals preparatory to fighting. No wrestler, regardless of his strength, physical, or technical abilities, will ever dare to enter the ring, muchless fight, without his "marabout" or JuJu Man, or without participating in his own pre-match ceremony. During the ceremony, the wrestler, accompanied by drummers and singers, dances around the arena; around his arms, legs, and waist are various kinds of juju or amulets the purpose of which is to protect him against evil spirits and the witchcraft of other fighters. It is this aspect of the sport which elevates a wrestling match beyond the level of ordinary spectator sport. Many people attend as much for the enjoyment of the ceremony as for the sport.

19. African Religion
Although there are cultural variations in belief among Africans, author Kwabena Dei OforiAttah believes they are not strong enough to blur the common strands that give Africa its distinctive religious character.
http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/aern/afridan.html
African Traditional Religion: Triumphs of Rituals
Introduction by Kwabena Dei Ofori-Attah The bedrock of African traditional religion is faith; faith based upon dogmatism. It is that kind of faith that does not call for any hard evidence. Again, it is that kind of faith that does not engage in metaphysics. It is simply "what was will be." In most cases, perception, intuition or the presence of a perplexing event can have a compelling effect on the belief system. Nothing is taken for granted when it comes to traditional religion. An individual may challenge the gods at his or her own risk. This does not in any way mean that all Africans have a common traditional religious practice. There are variations but they are not strong enough to blur the common strands that give Africa its distinctive religious practices. African spirits draw their strength, inspiration and wisdom from God. In African traditional Religion, God is seen as the author of life, the maker of everything. African traditional religion belief does not offer any other version of the creation. It is simply the work of God, the omnipotent, the everlasting, ever faithful, and merciful Father of all. Symbols figure prominently in the African society. These are transferred into the religious realm to establish a strong link between the unseen "spirits" and the living. It is common to see some of these symbols on the walls of the shrines or in the clothes worn by the traditional priests and other people who wish to express their mood through any of these symbols.
