Tocqueville, Alexis de The Old Regime and the Revolution, Volume I The Complete Text Cloth $32.50sp 0-226-80529-8 Spring 1998
Paper $20.00tx 0-226-80530-1 Spring 2004 Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) is familiar to readers as the author of Democracy in America , the most-quoted book written about the United States. The Old Regime and the Revolution is Tocqueville's great meditation on the origins and meanings of the French Revolution. One of the most profound and influential studies of this pivotal event, it remains a relevant and stimulating discussion of the problem of preserving individual and political freedom in the modern world. Writing in 1851, Tocqueville showed the continuity of French political behavior and social attitudes before and after the Revolution. He discussed the dangers to political freedom posed by tendencies towards government centralization and persistent class hostility that endured from the old regime to the Revolution and beyond. A major scholarly event, this handsomely produced book will be the definitive English edition of one of the great books in modern intellectual history.

Tocqueville, Alexis de The Old Regime and the Revolution, Volume II Notes on the French Revolution and Napoleon Cloth $45.00sp 0-226-80533-6 Fall 2001 With his monumental work The Old Regime and the Revolution , Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859)-best known for his classic Democracy in America envisioned a multivolume philosophic study of the origins of modern France that would examine the implications of French history on the nature and development of democratic society. Volume 1, which covered the eighteenth-century background to the Revolution, was published to great acclaim in 1856. On the continuation of this project, he wrote: "When this Revolution has finished its work, [this volume] will show what that work really was, and what the new society which has come from that violent labor is, what the Revolution has taken away and what it has preserved from that old regime against which it was directed." Tocqueville died in the midst of this work. Here in volume 2in clear, up-to-date Englishis all that he had completed, including the chapters he started for a work on Napoleon, notes and analyses he made in the course of researching and writing the first volume, and his notes on his preparation for his continuation. Based on the new French edition of

Biographical Sketch of Alexis de Tocqueville
Alexis de Toqueville (1805-1859) was born in Verneuil, near Paris, during the reign of Napoleon I. Through his father, Herve de Tocqueville, Alexis is descended from Clerel de Tocqueville, who fought with the Normans under William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1088 A.D. Herve de Tocqueville was a prefect during the Restoration at Angers, Beauvais, Dijon, Metz, Amiens, and Versailles. Alexis de Tocqueville’s mother, Louise, daughter of Louis le Peletier de Rosanbo, is the granddaughter of Lamoignon de Malesherbes, the noble who cautioned Louis XVI against absolutism and who was executed after his spirited defense of Louis XVI to the revolutionary tribunal. According to Alexis de Tocqueville, his great grandfather "defended the people before the King and the King before the people"; he added, "His is a double example which I have never forgotten, and shall never forget" (from Mdme. de Stael's Reflections on the French Revolution [1818], quoted in Larry Siedentop

Foundations of Business Thought Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) was born to aristocratic and religious parents in post-revolutionary France. He began his education at College Royal where he was a good student and won honors in rhetoric. He was greatly influenced by the French Revolution which made him eager to learn history. However, he later lost his interest in school with the exception of law classes. Tocqueville then studied law in Paris and married Mary Mottley, a poor English woman who was nine years older than him. Tocqueville was in poor health throughout his life. He suffered from attacks of pleurisy, migraines, neuralgia, difficult digestion, and stomach cramps. It is assumed that he died from slowly developing pulmonary tuberculosis. He also he had intense mood swings and was obsessively punctual. Still, before his last years, Tocqueville was a good swimmer, hunter and walker. During his youth, Tocqueville began to lose his religious faith. He believed that God exists and that there is a future life, but that was as much of religion that he would accept. Tocqueville was not articulate. He often groped for words and truncated his ideas. As a result, he envied those who could speak eloquently. This proved to be a huge stumbling block for Tocqueville in his law career. Reluctantly, he resigned himself to the idea of a lifetime in the judiciary and did the best he could. However, he was unable to win the favor of the judge of the law court and soon he turned to a political career.

Alexis de Tocqueville , researcher and historian who analyzed and wrote about America in the 1830's Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859), was a famous French statesman, historian and social philosopher. Beginning in 1831, he and Gustave de Beaumont toured the country of America for the purpose of observing the American people and their institutions. His two-part work, which was published in 1835 and 1840, was entitled Democracy in America . It has been described as "the most comprehensive and penetrating analysis of the relationship between character and society in America that has ever been written." In it he related: Upon my arrival in the United States the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention ; and the longer I stayed there, the more I perceived the great political consequences resulting from this new state of things . In France I had almost always seen the spirit of religion and the spirit of freedom marching in opposite directions. But in America I found they
