83. Thoreau (Henry David)

http://www.proverbes-citations.com/thoreau.htm

Born in 1817, in Concord, Massachusetts, Henry grew up in mild poverty and initially went to public schools. Through great sacrifice, his family put aside what they could and enrolled him in the prestigious Concord Academy. At only 16 years old, he took the Harvard College exams and just barely passed.
* This page is included from the recent book * The American Dreams Collection Special Book Offer Thoreau spent many long hours in the library learning Theology, studying four languages and writing over 5,000 pages of notes. At 20, Henry started keeping his Journal, which grew to 30 volumes throughout his lifetime.
Thoreau spent two years, two months and two days there roaming the countryside and enjoying the beauty of Walden Pond while he continued to write within the boundaries and beauty of simplified living.
In 1849, two years after he left Walden Pond, Thoreau published his historic essay “Resistance to Civil Government" which was posthumously called "Civil Disobedience” which emphasized personal ethics and responsibility.

Thoreau was an integral but prickly member of the Transcendentalist community in Massachusetts as might be expected from the writer of "I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude," and as described in Emerson's funeral eulogy. Thoreau on Taxes, Huckleberries, "Civil Disobedience" On this day in 1846, Henry David Thoreau was jailed for not paying his poll tax. Thoreau was almost exactly half-way through his Walden stay, and had come to Concord to pick up a shoe at the cobblers; this came to the attention of Sam Staples, tax collector and warden of the county jail, who was under orders from the town fathers to confront and, if necessary, confine this most contrary of its sons. Thoreau and Walden Mid-nineteenth century America was awash with reform movements and counter-culture experiments, and Henry David Thoreau could have his pick. Instead, exercising his belief that "I'd rather live in a private Hell than a public Heaven," he borrowed land from Emerson and an axe from Bronson Alcott and marked off a sunny, south-facing slope of Walden Pond. . . .

Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862)
Henry David Thoreau was born and brought up in Concord, Massachusetts, where he spent most of his days. Plain living, to the verge of deprivation, was the rule in the home of Thoreau's childhood. But the life of the intellect and spirit was perceived at its true value in that frugal household, and the family stinted itself to provide for his education at Harvard. The home was a seeding-place of abolitionist- sentiment. That was a fit beginning to Thoreau's later work as a "liberator". At college he lived a life of rigid seclusion, shunning acquaintance, and absorbed in the classics. One friendship he made, however, - he met Emerson, who was fourteen years older than he, and won his comradeship. After graduation from Harvard (1837), he lectured a little, he taught in the Concord Academy for a time; he worked at various jobs which required skill of the hand, his aptitude in this direction being marvellous. He had a brief experience as private tutor. While working as tutor to Emerson's family, he associated with a group of transcendentalists. Thoreau is usually thought of as Emerson's disciple, their natures were too opposed for them ever to be very close. Nevertheless, they remained friends and associates all their lives. In 1845 Thoreau built himself a hut on the shore of Walden Pond near Concord and lived there alone for more than two years. His solitary life in the woods resulted in the book called Walden, - which was not published till 1854. It was during his residence at Walden that he was arrested and spent a night in the local gaol for his refusal to pay poll-tax. This was Thoreau's gesture against a government which supported the Mexican War and the increase of slave-holding territory.

Thoreau, Henry David (1817-1862) In essays, journals, and poems, Henry David Thoreau recorded impassioned expressions of the beauty and the agony of love between men. Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, on July 12, 1817. He attended the newly founded Concord Academy and, after taking several leaves from his studies to earn money and to regain his health after his first attack of tuberculosis, went on to graduate from Harvard with the class of 1837. Thoreau is perhaps best known for his stay at Walden Pond, chronicled in Walden (1854), and his night in jail after refusing to pay a poll tax to a government that supported the Mexican War and endorsed slavery. He wrote about this latter act of protest in "Resistance to Civil Government," popularly known as "Civil Disobedience," an essay that has inspired many, including Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to Walden and his well-known speeches and essays on antebellum social concerns, he wrote

Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau was a writer, philosopher, and naturalist who was born and lived in Concord, Massachusetts . From 1841 to 1843, he resided in the home of essayist and Transcendental philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson . He had a lifelong friendship and association with Emerson, who introduced him to other writers and nonconformist thinkers who were making Concord the center of new ideas. Among them were Amos Bronson Alcott W. Ellery Channing Margaret Fuller , and Nathaniel Hawthorne . Essentially a philosopher of individualism, Thoreau placed nature above materialism in private life and ethics above conformity in politics. He published essays, poems, and reviews in various magazines, including the Dial , whose editorship he assumed briefly in 1843 when Emerson was away. In 1845, in what has become a much-celebrated experiment, Thoreau built and lived in a crude hut on the shore of Walden Pond. Here he devoted his time to studying nature, meditating on philosophical problems, reading classic literature, and holding long conversations with his neighbors. By no means a hermit, he frequently walked to the village, entertained visitors at his house, and hired himself out as a surveyor. After his Walden experience, Thoreau plied his skills as a surveyor to earn what little money he needed for the things that he could not "grow or make or do without." He spent his free time walking, studying, and writing. Like John Muir , Thoreau derived inspiration and spiritual sustenance from exploring the wilderness and was quite adept and inventive at woodcraft. He lectured at the Concord Lyceum and elsewhere in New England, and once traveled as far west as Philadelphia. He became increasingly involved with social and political issues, often speaking out against economic injustice and slavery. In 1846, following Alcott's example, he chose to go to jail rather than support the Mexican War (1846 - 1848) by paying his poll tax. Thoreau clarified his position in his essay "Civil Disobedience" (1849), in which he also discussed passive resistancea method of protest that later was adopted by Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi as well as by civil rights activists in the United States. At the age of 44, the "self-appointed inspector of snowstorms" died of tuberculosis.

Henry D. Thoreau American writer and philosopher, remembered for his autobiographic Walden, and his naturalist style
American essayist, poet, and practical philosopher, best-known for his autobiographical story of life in the woods, WALDEN (1854). Thoreau became one of the leading personalities in New England Transcendentalism. He wrote tirelessly but earned from his books and journalism little. Thoreau's CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE (1849) influenced Gandhi in his passive resistance campaigns, Martin Luther King, Jr., and at one time the politics of the British Labour Party.

Democratic Origins and Revolutionary Writers, 1776-1820: Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
Index Henry David Thoreau, of French and Scottish descent, was born in Concord and made it his permanent home. From a poor family, like Emerson , he worked his way through Harvard. Throughout his life, he reduced his needs to the simplest level and managed to live on very little money, thus maintaining his independence. In essence, he made living his career. A nonconformist, he attempted to live his life at all times according to his rigorous principles. This attempt was the subject of many of his writings. Thoreau's masterpiece, Walden , or Life in the Woods (1854), is the result of two years, two months, and two days (from 1845 to 1847) he spent living in a cabin he built at Walden Pond on property owned by Emerson. In Walden , Thoreau consciously shapes this time into one year, and the book is carefully constructed so the seasons are subtly evoked in order. The book also is organized so that the simplest earthly concerns come first (in the section called "Economy," he describes the expenses of building a cabin); by the ending, the book has progressed to meditations on the stars.
