Thomson, James Thomson, James, , Scottish poet. Educated at Edinburgh, he went to London, took a post as tutor, and became acquainted with such literary celebrities as Gay, Arbuthnot, and Pope. His most famous poem, The Seasons, The Seasons, Thomson's faithful, sensitive descriptions of external nature were a direct challenge to the urban and artificial school of Pope and influenced the forerunners of romanticism, such as Gray and Cowper. His other important poems are Liberty The Castle of Indolence (1748), written in imitation of Spenser and reflecting the poet's delight in idleness. Thomson also wrote a series of tragedies along classical lines, with a strong political flavor. The most notable were Sophonisba Edward and Eleanora (1739), which was banned for political reasons; and

Thomson, James
Northern Irish physicist and engineer who discovered 1849 that the melting point of ice decreases with pressure. He was also an authority on hydrodynamics and invented the vortex waterwheel 1850.
Thomson was born in Belfast, the brother of the future Lord Kelvin. At the age of only ten he began to attend Glasgow University, obtaining an MA in 1839. He held a succession of engineering posts before settling in Belfast in 1851 as a civil engineer. He was professor of civil engineering at Belfast 1857-73 and at Glasgow 1873-89.
The vortex water wheel was a smaller and more efficient turbine than those in use at the time, and it came into wide use. Thomson continued his investigations into whirling fluids, making improvements to pumps, fans, and turbines.
Thomson's discovery about the melting point of ice led him to an understanding of the way in which glaciers flow. He also carried out painstaking studies of the phase relationships of solids, liquids, and gases, and was involved in both geology and meteorology, producing scientific papers on currents and winds.

THOMSON, J.THOMSON, T. its clouded grey sky, and its sea which leaps and falls again in waves of sparkling and of shadowed silver, is fit to rank among the triumphs of Scottish art. Besides the accounts of his own travels Thomson wrote, in collaboration with Miss E. Harris Smith, Ulu (London, 1888), a novel based on his insight into the working of the African mind, Mungo Park and the Niger (London, 1890), a sound critical biography and many magazine articles on African politics. See Joseph Thomson, African Explorer (London, 1896), a biography by his brother, the Rev. J. B. Thomson, which contains a list of the published writings of the explorer.

Thomson, James Thomson, James, , Scottish poet and essayist. He is remembered for his darkly pessimistic poem The City of Dreadful Night. He was raised in an orphan asylum and became (1851) an army teacher at Ballincollig, Ireland. In 1862 he was dismissed from the service for a very minor offense, became a clerk in London, and contributed (using the signature B.V.) to the National Reformer, the magazine of his friend Charles Bradlaugh. Thomson's life in London was lonely and impoverished, aggravated by insomnia, his own incredibly melancholic disposition, and periodic bouts with alcoholism. His greatest poetical work, The City of Dreadful Night (1880, first published in the National Reformer, Fraser's Magazine, 1869) is an example of his lyric gift. Vane's Story (1880) and A Voice from the Nile (1884) are later collections of his poems. Thomson also wrote many essays and criticisms. His collected poems appeared in 1895 and a volume of prose in 1896. See biography by H. S. Salt (rev. ed. 1914); study by I. B. Walker (1950). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia

Battalion, ROYAL FUSILIERS 9th Brigade, 3rd Division who died on Thursday, 28th March 1918. Aged 27 James was the son of James Thomson, of Butler's Farm. This farm straddled the Parish Boundary between Peldon and Abberton and James is included on the War Memorial tablet on the wall of the Church at Peldon. The Thomsons originally came from Scotland and left after the Wa r , when the farm was ultimately flooded when Abberton reservoir was created. James younger brother, David married Hilda Hayhoe in Saint Andrew's, Abberton 10th November 1937. At the time, he had taken over the farm as their father had died. David ultimately died from Wiel's disease. The 4th battalion were at Parkhurst on the Isle of Wight in August 1914 just before war broke out. They were part of 9th Brigade, 3rd Division. James enlisted at Warley near Brentwood. His medal entitlement does not show the date of entry into France but it can be inferred that it was probably 1916 at the earliest. James death coincides with the 1st Battle of Arras on the 28th March, when during the Kaiserschlact the 9th brigade including the 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers were used to try and block the German advance.
