Welcome Message
Hello, Welcome to my Gerhardstein genealogy and family history web site. Perhaps you came here via links on Gerhardstein.org Cyndi's List GENDEX RootsWeb , or WorldConnect . Or perhaps you came here from an Internet search engine, like AltaVista Google Yahoo , or Copernic . However you got here, I'm pleased you stopped by. This web site traces Gerhardstein genealogy starting about 1698 in Germany and France, and though I watch for one, I've not found another web site on the Internet specializing exclusively in the genealogy and history of the Gerhardstein surname. You may find that this web site is one of very few that provides locations of points of interest using GPS coordinates. Please contact me for clarification. The purpose of this web site is to create a presence on the Internet for promoting research and interest in the Gerhardstein surname, and to encourage communication and information sharing among related family branches. Because it is so rare, the Gerhardstein surname represents a very tightly defined group, an

Maurice Thompson: A Talented Hoosier (PE-04)
Maurice Thompson was a successful soldier, civil engineer, naturalist, geologist, lawyer, legislator, poet, novelist, editor, and literary critic. Born in Fairfield in 1844, he was the son of a prosperous Baptist minister. In 1853 the family migrated to northern Georgia, where they became plantation owners. Thompson was a scout in the Conferate army in the Civil War. Returning to Crawfordsville in 1868, he became a civil engineer for the railorads. He later opened a law office and still later became a poet and a novelist. He was appointed State Geologist of Indiana in 1885 and served until he resigned in December 1888. "Alice of Old Vincennes," written about a year before he died in 1901, was his most successful literary effort. Our Hoosier State Beneath Us: People

Norfolk Roots of some Canadian and American Tuck Families According to Rye's Norfolk Families the name "Tuck" is of Roman origin. The four oldest names in Norfolk are said to be: Dack, Lack, Mack, and Tuck, from the Roman Dacius, Lacius, Macius, and Tucius. It has been supposed that these four were Roman soldiers given grants of land in what is today East Anglia when the Roman legions were withdrawn from Britain about 400 A.D. at the collapse of the Roman Empire. Other authorities suggest that the name is of Danish origin, developed from Toki ; still others find the name curious, and do not speculate on its origins. When the Romans conquered Britain, the inhabitants of Norfolk, known as the Iceni, submitted quietly to Roman rule for some years. They then rose against their conquerors and were defeated. In spite of the revolt they were allowed some independence. A large part of the Norfolk land was given to the Romans to settle after the Iceni Revolt. In 62 A.D., they again revolted, this time under the leadership of Queen Boadicea, who, according to a Roman historian, raised an army of 120,000 Britons. Three Roman towns and 70,000 Romans are said to have been destroyed by this force. How big a part the Norfolk Iceni played in this revolt is impossible to say; but, after it was quelled, the county seems to have been held in complete subjection so long as the Romans remained in Britain.
