TO THE GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC. Maurice Thompson (18441901). I was a rebel,if you please,. a reckless fighter to the last,. Nor do I fall upon my knees.

War ... War Between the States... ABRAHAM LINCOLN WALKS AT MIDNIGHT Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) It is portentous, and a thing of state That here at midnight, in our little town A mourning figure walks, and will not rest, Near the old court-house pacing up and down, Or by his homestead, or in shadowed yards He lingers where his children used to play, Or through the market, on the well-worn stones He stalks until the dawn-stars burn away. A bronzed, lank man! His suit of ancient black, A famous high-top hat and plain worn shawl Make him the quaint great figure that men love, The prairie-lawyer, master of us all. He cannot sleep upon his hillside now. He is among us:as in times before! And we who toss and lie awake for long, Breathe deep, and start, to see him pass the door. His head is bowed. He thinks of men and kings. Yea, when the sick world cries, how can he sleep? Too many peasants fight, they know not why; Too many homesteads in black terror weep. The sins of all the war-lords burn his heart.

Maurice Thompson (18441901), also a resident of Crawfordsville, hasbeen mentioned already as a writer of verse. He was a novelist

these, three, constituting the Saracinesca series, are the best. Mr. Crawford died at his villa in Sorrento, at the age of fifty-five. Gertrude Franklin Atherton (born 1859), a Californian by birth, has lived a cosmopolitan life here and abroad. Her early novels were written in the nineties; of her later works The Aristocrats The Conqueror Ancestors (1907), and The Tower of Ivory (1910) are prominent. Perhaps the best known of our writers from the South is Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915), a native of Baltimore. A versatile master of several arts, including the substantial one of building lighthouses, his first success in fiction was the fine character sketch, Colonel Carter of Cartersville Tom Grogan Caleb West (1898), and The Tides of Barnegat (1906) are all realistic studies of the people whom the author may have known when living the practical business life of a building contractor and mechanical engineer. The Fortunes of Oliver Horne (1902) is said to be reminiscent of that period in Mr. Smith's life when he was an art student in New York. His later stories, The Romance of an Old- Fashioned Gentleman (1907) and Peter (1908), indicate a return to the more sentimental manner of his earliest success.

    Civil War Poetry
    Civil War Poetry
Civil War poetry melds the essence of literature and history in one. By reading the poems and understanding the historic context, the readers could explore the vast wealth of the American culture of the middle 19th century. The outcome of this last romantic war defines us as what we were, what we are and what we will be. We will examine some samples of these fine poems.
On December 20, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union and then, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas followed. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., born in Cambridge, MA, graduated from Harvard at age 20, became famous for his poem "Old Ironsides" at the tender age of 21. Not only was he a poet, he was also a physician and Harvard professor. His son, who bore the same name, was just as famous. Junior also attended Harvard, fought in the Civil War, and was later appointed Mass. Supreme Court Chief Justice, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
The poem was written on March 25, 1861. The mood was very conciliatory. No anger and blame was reflected and only longing for the return of the Allegoric prodigal sister. The prediction of the outcome of the war and the ultimate return of the sisters were unkeenly accurate.

    Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.
