An Arab Love-Song
The hunched camels of the night
    Trouble the bright
And silver waters of the moon.
The Maiden of the Morn will soon
    Through Heaven stray and sing,
    Star gathering.
Now while the dark about our loves is strewn,
Light of my dark, blood of my heart, O come !
And night will catch her breath up, and be dumb.
Leave thy father, leave thy mother
And thy brother ; Leave the black tents of thy tribe apart ! Am I not thy father and thy brother, And thy mother ? And thou—what needest with thy tribe's black tents Who hast the red pavilion of my heart ? Modern British Poetry
The Kingdom of God
‘The Kingdom of God is within you.’ O WORLD invisible, we view thee, O world intangible, we touch thee, O world unknowable, we know thee, Inapprehensible, we clutch thee ! Does the fish soar to find the ocean, The eagle plunge to find the air That we ask of the stars in motion If they have rumour of thee there ? Not where the wheeling systems darken

FRANCIS THOMPSON COLLECTION
400 items. Francis Thompson (1859–1907), poet and prose writer, was born in Preston, Lancashire, and studied medicine unsuccessfully at Owens College from 1876 to 1882, three times failing his examinations. He moved to London, where he fell prey to opium addiction and suffered destitution. He published his first volume of poetry in 1893; this included his most famous work, 'The Hound of Heaven'. The collection, which was accumulated by John Francis Power and purchased by the Library in 1969, comprises first editions of Thompson’s poems and prose, with critical and biographical publications. Very few of the items described by Stonehill are wanting. There is an especially fine edition of The Hound of Heaven (Chatto and Windus, 1914), and an edition of the Works printed at Bernard Newdigate’s Arden Press for Francis and Wilfrid Meynell (1913). The latter volume is handsomely bound in full vellum, with an autograph letter from Wilfrid and two typescript notes from Francis tipped in. Wilfrid Meynell was Thompson’s editor, friend and literary executor. Finding aids: recorded in general printed-book catalogue Location: JRULM (Deansgate).

Related Category: English Literature, 19th Century, Biographies Francis Thompson Meynell , edited the Catholic periodical Merry England. They recognized Thompson's poetic ability and took him under their care. Poems (1893), which attracted much attention, contained "The Hound of Heaven," Thompson's chief and best-known work, describing the poet's futile flight from God. Two more volumes appeared, Sister Songs (1895) and New Poems (1897), both supplemented by the publication of a few more poems after his death. Thompson spent the years from 1893 to 1897 in a monastery in Wales. Although Thompson is considered an important English poet, his verse has frequently been criticized for its verbosity and lack of originality in thought. Thompson also wrote a number of essays, including a study of Shelley (1909). See his Literary Criticisms (ed. by T. L. Connolly, 1948); biographies by E. Meynell (1913, repr. 1971), and P. van K. Thomson (1961, repr. 1972); studies by J. C. Reid (1959) and R. L. MEgroz (1927, repr. 1971).

My songs have followed you, Like birds the summer; Ah! bring them back to me, Swiftly, dear comer. Seraphim, Her to hymn Might leave their portals; And at my feet learn The harping of mortals! A Carrier Song Absence Swift, swift, and bring with you Song's Indian summer! A Carrier Song (st. 2) [ Songs I have no angels left Now, Sweet, to pray to: Where you have made your shrine They are away to. BOOKS on-line House of Bondage House of Bondage When I perceive Love’s heavenly reaping still
Regard perforce the clouds’ vicissitude,
That the fixed spirit loves not when it will,
But craves its seasons of the flawful blood;
When I perceive that the high poet doth
Oft voiceless stray beneath the uninfluent stars,
That even Urania of her kiss is loth, And Song’s brave wings fret on their sensual bars; When I perceive the fullest-sailed sprite Lag at most need upon the lethed seas, The provident captainship oft voided quite, And lamed lie deep-draughted argosies; I scorn myself, that put for such strange toys The wit of man to purposes of boys.
