Francis Thompson
Francis Thompson was born in Preston in 1864 but moved to live with his family in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1864. Raised as a Roman Catholic and educated at home, in 1870 he went into Ushaw College to train for the priesthood. However, his tutors found him to be temperamentally unsuited and he left to study for a degree in Medicine in Manchester's Owens College (later to become the University of Manchester). In the event, he did not complete the course and was thrown out by his father.
He then moved to live in London where he would probably have ended his short life as a drug addict were it not for the intervention of Wilfred and Alice Meynall, publishers of the Merrie England magazine, who, recognising the quality of his writings, took him in, nursed him back to health and became his major promoters and benefactors throughout the remainder of his life.

“The Hound of Heaven”
Sunday, July 20, 2003
Preached by David Johnson Rowe
Scripture: Luke 14:15-23
I have always wanted to preach on “The Hound of Heaven.” We talk about it a lot in church life — in Bible study, youth work, counseling, pastoral ministry — “The Hound of Heaven” gets mentioned every time we want to emphasize how much God loves us, God wants us, God needs us. I mean that seriously. It’s almost as if God is incomplete if we are not in His life. That’s the message of today’s Scripture, also, God never tires of reaching out to us. In “The Hound of Heaven,” the narrator knows that he is pursued by God. He tries to ignore God, avoid God, substitute other things for God. He revels in his youth, he immerses himself in nature, he rejoices in his independence, he can do it all without God, he’s sure, and yet God is always there, nipping at his heels, running him down, the “hound of heaven,” because God knows, sooner or later, down deep, God is what we are after, and what God provides, nothing else can. This is a simple message and a simple sermon. I’m not going into detail about how God hounds after us. God can use our conscience, our friends, our work or Scripture, a good book or movie or dream, but God keeps after us.

FAVORITE POETS WORKS
The Hound of Heaven
-Francis Thompson 1859-1907-
I fled Him, down the nights and down the days;
I fled Him, down the arches of the years;
I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways
Of my own mind; and in the mist of tears
I hid from Him, and under running laughter.
Up vistaed hopes I sped;
And shot, precipitated,
Adown Titanic glooms of chasmèd fears, From those strong Feet that followed, followed after. But with unhurrying chase, And unperturbed pace, Deliberate speed, majestic instancy, They beat and a Voice beat More instant than the Feet "All things betray thee, who betrayest Me." I pleaded, outlaw-wise, By many a hearted casement, curtained red, Trellised with intertwining charities; (For, though I knew His love Who followèd, Yet was I sore adread Lest, having Him, I must have naught beside); But, if one little casement parted wide, The gust of His approach would clash it to. Fear wist not to evade, as Love wist to pursue. Across the margent of the world I fled, And troubled the gold gateways of the stars

His poetry, usually on religious subjects, is noted for its brilliant imagery and sonorous language. He was educated for the Roman Catholic priesthood at Ushaw College but in 1877 entered Owens College, Manchester, to study medicine. Relinquishing his medical studies in 1885, he went to London, where he lived a destitute life, suffering from ill health, poverty, and opium addiction. In 1888 he sent a manuscript to Wilfrid Meynell who, with his wife Alice Meynell , edited the Catholic periodical Merry England. They recognized Thompson's poetic ability and took him under their care. Poems (1893), which attracted much attention, contained The Hound of Heaven, Thompson's chief and best-known work, describing the poet's futile flight from God. Two more volumes appeared, Sister Songs (1895) and New Poems (1897), both supplemented by the publication of a few more poems after his death. Thompson spent the years from 1893 to 1897 in a monastery in Wales. Although Thompson is considered an important English poet, his verse has frequently been criticized for its verbosity and lack of originality in thought. Thompson also wrote a number of essays, including a study of Shelley (1909). See his Literary Criticisms (ed. by T. L. Connolly, 1948); biographies by E. Meynell (1913, repr. 1971), and P. van K.
