In the winter of 1887, Mr. Wilfrid Meynell, the editor of a minor Catholic literary magazine called Merry England, received a strange parcel. It contained an essay and some poems, with a cover letter:
    Dear Sir,
    In enclosing the accompanying article for your inspection, I must
    ask pardon for the soiled state of the manuscript. It is due, not to
    slovenliness, but to the strange places and circumstances under which

Francis Thompson
Francis Thompson was born in Preston, Lancashire. He studied medicine at Owens College (now Manchester University) but failed his examinations. In 1885 he came to London, where he rapidly descended into opium addiction, poverty, and ill-health. He was rescued from destitution by Alice and Wilfrid Meynell, the editor of Merry England , who, recognising his literary talent, helped him to rehabilitate himself and encouraged his writing. This led to a productive period between 1893 and 1897, when three volumes of his poems were published. He relapsed into opium addiction, however, and died of tuberculosis in 1907. Thompson's themes are an unusual blend of God, nature, and love and his poetry has a romantic, wistful, ethereal quality. The Poppy

I fled Him, down the nights and down the days;
I fled Him, down the arches of the years;
I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways
Of my own mind; and in the midst of tears
I hid from Him, and under running laughter.
Up vistaed hopes, I sped; And shot precipitated, From those strong Feet that followed, followed after. But with unhurrying chase, Deliberate speed, majestic instancy, They beatand a Voice beat, More instant than the Feet: "All things betray thee, who betrayest Me." I pleaded, outlawwise, By many a hearted casement, curtained red, Trellised with inter-twining charities; Yet was I sore adread Lest, having Him, I must have naught beside.) But, if one little casement parted wide, The gust of his approach would clash it to. Fear wist not to evade, as Love wist to pursue. Across the margent of the world I fled

Original Exhibit Summer 2001
This exhibit celebrates the life and work of British Catholic poet Francis Thompson (1859-1907) and the Boston College Library's efforts in acquiring the Francis Thompson Collection. University Librarian Father Terence Connolly, S.J. was a lifelong Thompson scholar and established the Thompson Collection at Boston College with enthusiastic financial support from the Honorable Judge John J. Burns, Mary J. Donnelly and many other contributors. On display are original Thompson manuscripts and letters, photographs, artwork, collections of Thompson's works published both before and after his death, and work by other authors and artists inspired by his poetry. The exhibit is running in conjunction with the recent publication of Dr. Brigid Boardman's The Poems of Francis Thompson (Chestnut Hill, MA: John J. Burns Library, 2001).
This is a detail from a group portrait of Thompson and his fellow students at St. Cuthbert's College in Ushaw, England. Thompson was schooled here from 1870 to 1877.
This is the first page of the original manuscript of Thompson's poem "The Hound of Heaven" published in Merry England (July 1890). This is considered to be the greatest of Francis Thompson's poems. There are more than sixty translations of "The Hound of Heaven" in the Thompson Collection, in languages ranging from Afrikaans to Zulu

Rev. J. Robert Barth, SJ (Photo By Lee Pellegrini) "Quand vous serez bien vieille, au soir, à la chandelle," he said. "Assise auprès du feu, devidant et filant..." Fr. Barth said he often introduces students to poetry by presenting verse in a foreign tongue. "You won't understand this," he tells them. "Just listen to the music. "Poetry is like music. It's meant to be heard." That spirit animates Fr. Barth's latest project, a compact-disc recording of read poems by Francis Thompson and Gerard Manley Hopkins, SJ, that he hopes will spark a renewed appreciation of the bard's art at BC and beyond. Released last fall, the recording is available at the Boston College Bookstore for $10, with proceeds benefiting the Burns Library. The CD includes Fr. Francis Thompson When Thompson couldn't complete medical school he moved to London. Things went poorly for him in London as he lived for several years as a tramp. Poverty and opium addiction were his lot. Then a magazine editor rescued him. The following is the opening lines of a poem by Thompson. I urge you to read the entire poem when you have the opportunity. The Hound of Heaven I fled Him, down the nights and down the days; I fled Him, down the arches of the years; I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways Of my own mind; and in the mist of tears I hid from Him, and under running laughter. The Ripper Exposed Whittlesea Post July 5, 2000
    A Lalor resident believes he has uncovered the identity of Britain's most notorious serial killer. Tim King reports. Unsolved murder cases never lie down and die easily. Many years after the foul deeds are done, forensic science specialists and enthusiastic lay-peaople continue to sift through case notes, theories and physical evidence. Lalor resident Richard Patterson is equally enthusiastic about one of Britian's darkest murder myseries. The part-time writer and student has published two books about the identity of Jack the Ripper, whom police believe killed five London women in 1888.
    At the time, London police believed the Ripper killed the women from August 31 to November 9 in the city's East End. Some theorists blamed the Ripper for committing another 10 similar murders. Mr Patterson was studying philosophy at La Trobe University in 1997 when he came across one of Thompson's poems. Upon further reading, Thompson's "disturbed" life and writings, many of which mentioned violence, convinced Mr Patterson that the Ripper and the poet were one and the same. Mr Patterson said Thompson was bitter and confused after failing to become a surgeon and a priest after 13 years' study. The poet was addicted to opium and was homeless near London's West India docks for three years.
    "He (Thompson) carried a dissecting scalpel," said Mr Patterson. "He told people he used to shave with it. And Jack the Ripper was thought to be a surgeon. The murders occurred within religious sancturies- Francis Thompson studied with the Roman Catholic Church for seven years to be a priest." Mr Patterson said the killings occurred on religious festival dates- dates that Thompson would have known. Mr Patterson also suspects Thompson for the murders because of the poet's admission that he set fire to his London lodgings in 1896, the same night of the Ripper's first reported killing and a nearby warehouse fire.
