Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for their contribution to our site.  The following information came from Microsoft Encarta. Here is a hyperlink to the Microsoft Encarta home page.   http://www.encarta.msn.com
Hobbes, Thomas
(1588-1679), English philosopher and political theorist ( see Political Theory), one of the first modern Western thinkers to provide a secular justification for the political state. The philosophy of Hobbes marked a departure in English philosophy from the religious emphasis of Scholasticism. His ideas represented a reaction against the decentralizing ideas of the Reformation (1517-1648), which, Hobbes contended, brought anarchy ( see Anarchism). Regarded as an important early influence on the philosophical doctrine of utilitarianism, Hobbes also contributed to modern psychology and laid the foundations of modern sociology by applying mechanistic principles ( see Mechanism) in an attempt to explain human motivation and social organization.

    http://www.hoasm.org/IVM/Tomkins.html
    Thomas Tomkins
English composer and organist. Tomkins was born into a musical family and probably became a choirboy at St Davids in 1578; he later studied with William Byrd . He was appointed organist of Worcester Cathedral in 1597, succeeding Nathanial Patrick, a gifted composer, who was appointed Master of the Children in 1590 or 1591 and died, apparently young, in 1595. Tomkins graduated BMus at Oxford in 1607, and became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal between 1617 and 1620; he was its organist in 1621. He continued, however, to hold his Worcester post until 1646, when services were suspended because of the Civil War; Tomkins went to live on his son's estate and devoted himself to writing virginal music. He published a single volume of madrigals, his only secular publication, in 1622; it was actually, significantly enough, entitled Songs, not madrigals, and included some anthems. He was nevertheless quite madrigalian in his technique. Tomkins composed music for the Coronation of Charles I (1625). Organist of the King's Chappel 1625-1628.

Monticello, Virginia 1826) Thomas Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia in 1743. He attended the college of William and Mary, but received no formal architectural training. Essentially self-taught, he assembled an impressive library of art and architecture which included several copies of Palladio's Quattro Libri. Over time Jefferson acquired an intense appreciation of Palladio's architectural theories based on their connection to ancient Rome . Recognizing the powerful political connotations inherent in ancient Roman structures Jefferson designed many of his civic buildings in a neo-Roman style. While acting as Minister to France from 1784-89 Jefferson studied the architectural heritage of France, gaining insight from architectural historians and site visits. From the mid 1770s he employed and worked with his distinguished contemporary Benjamin H. Latrobe

AUTHORITARIANISM AND RACIAL PREJUDICE IN AUSTRALIA: A REPLY TO THOMAS*
University of New South Wales, Australia
    JOHN J. RAY
    SUMMARY
Neither Thomas nor previous writers produce adequate evidence to support the claim that Australian culture is in general more authoritarian than North American culture. The claim that the State of Queensland is an especially authoritarian region of Australia is similarly faulty. Both claims ignore public evidence contradicting them. Previous research has shown that the Conservatism scale used by Thomas is questionable as a measure of authoritarianism. Thomas' sample of 56 Brisbane mothers also does not permit the generalizations he wishes to make. His study must then be discounted.
Thomas (9) rightly attacks flaws in previous research into the relationship between authoritarianism and racial prejudice. His main interest is whether any work done with the F scale can be said to be valid and whether any relationship that does exist might be culture-specific. Specifically, he examines whether the relationship between social distance measures and the Wilson and Patterson (11) Conservatism scale might not be low among members of the supposedly authoritarian culture in the State of Queensland, Australia.
While one can hardly disagree with his criticisms of the F scale's validity (3), his further assertion that the Conservatism scale is a better measure of authoritarianism and that the State of Queensland has an authoritarian culture are both highly questionable.

    [ text version ]
Welcome to the profoundly unofficial but widely collaborative Web page devoted to the work of Thomas Pynchon - one of the most challenging and most rewarding of contemporary American writers. This interactive project-in-progress comes to you from a small college town named Claremont at the eastern edge of LA County - a town that looks a lot, in fact, like San Narciso We're mostly interested in Pynchon's works , but what little is known of the life of the world's most famous literary recluse can be found here Some of the initial work on this page was done by Penny Padgett . Among the many materials she thought to include, here are two versions of a Pynchon FAQ , now-revised current answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions about our author. We've scattered a variety of multimedia goodies throughout the "Pomona Pynchon Page" on the World Wide Web. Some of these surprise packages contain still photos, others will play as Quicktime (tm - Apple Computer) video clips; still others will pop open to play Pynchonesque sounds. We hope you enjoy this place, since it's made to be explored, and come back periodically to see it improved. You can even contact us with reactions, suggestions and the like, at WASTE@pomona.edu
