181. HOASM: Thomas Weelkes
Biography, selected discography, and links to composers of early music complementing the Here Of A Sunday Morning radio program.

Thomas Weelkes
Thomas Weelkes, whose professional career spanned one of the most fertile periods in England's musical history, is without doubt one of her finest composers. Like Purcell, he had a vivid imagination and love of experiment, and died prematurely at the peak of his creative powers, but not before he had composed a very large amount of music. Nowhere are Weelkes' outstanding musical abilities more evident than in his four sets of madrigals, which appeared between 1597 and 1608, and his splendidly sonorous full anthems. The English madrigal school reached its peak with Weelkes, the most original madrigalist, and John Wilbye , the most polished; both were deeply indebted to Thomas Morley , both surpassed him.
As a madrigalist, Thomas Weelkes owed a great debt to Thomas Morley , who had done more than anyone to establish the Italian form on English soil. But while Weelkes' madrigals may lack Morley's lightness of touch and fondness for nimble counterpoint, they are much more adventurous and possess stronger links with English musical tradition. Similarly, although Weelkes does not display the same elegant and carefully shaded sensitivity to the text as John Wilbye , arguably England's greatest madrigalist, he pushed the use of musical imagery to its limits and often attained a magnificent sonority in his writing.

JJ Long's The Novels of Thomas Bernhard: form and its function

W Early on in Thomas Bernhard: the making of an Austrian , the first English biography of the Austrian novelist, playwright and poet, Gitta Honegger says the apparatus of the theatre is an "annoyingly overused existential paradigm", and she's right. I've only used it once and it's annoying me already. However, it is clear that her subject is the paradigm's essential figure. There seems to be no private Thomas Bernhard. As such, Honegger says he is a particularly Austrian phenomenon. The nation, she says, transplanted the baroque theatrics of the old Hapsburg Empire into its cultural life, notably the Salzburg Festival, the state run Burgtheatre, and one man: Thomas Bernhard. Each provided an arena for Austria to conjure its self image. However, the important thing to remember is that it wasn't Bernhard who said Austria was still full of Nazis, it was a character in his play "Heldenplatz". And while everyone assumes Bernhard meant every word as his own, those words are part of a whole that, as JJ Long explains in his book

Scientific career and current research interests: Thomas Boller started his studies 1968 at "Abteilung X" of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich). Initially, he was most interested in medical biochemistry, but he converted to plant biology due to the fascinating lectures of Prof. Philippe Matile He subsequently spent two years in the laboratory of Prof. Hans Kende in the MSU-DOE Plant Research Laboratory , Michigan State University, East Lansing. Initially working on plant vacuoles, he provided clear evidence that this organelle is an equivalent of the animal lysosomes, as postulated by Philippe Matile some years earlier. Subsequently, because of the excitement about ethylene biosynthesis prevailing at that time in Hans Kende's lab, he became drawn to that subject, and he discovered the key enzyme of ethylene biosynthesis, ACC synthase. Ethylene biosynthesis remained a favorite topic, with the cloning of ACC oxidase as another highlight, and is still actively pursued in Basel ( "Ethylene"

James Joseph Sylvester attended two primary schools in London, then his secondary schooling was at the Royal Institution in Liverpool. In 1833 he became a student at St John's College, Cambridge. Two other famous mathematicians took the tripos examination in the same year as Sylvester, namely Duncan Gregory and George Green . Sylvester came second, Green who was 20 years older than the other two came fourth with Duncan Gregory fifth. (The mathematician who came first did little work of importance after graduating: this was not at uncommon in the 'speed test' which the tripos was at that time.) At this time it was necessary for a student to sign a religious oath to the Church of England before graduating and Sylvester, being Jewish, refused to take the oath necessary so could not graduate. For the same reason he was not eligible for a Smith's prize nor for a Fellowship. From 1838 Sylvester taught physics for three years at the University of London, one of the few places which did not bar him because of his religion. His former teacher

Enhanced and inhibited visible spontaneous emission by atoms in a confocal resonator
D. J. Heinzen, J. J. Childs, J. E. Thomas, and M. S. Feld
George R. Harrison Spectroscopy Laboratory and Department of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139
Received 5 December 1986 We report the alteration of visible spontaneous emission by atoms coupled to the degenerate modes of a confocal resonator. The partial emission rate into the resonator modes is enhanced by a factor of 19 when the resonator is tuned to the atomic transition frequency and inhibited by a factor of 42 when it is detuned. This results in a fractional increase of 1.6% and decrease of 0.5%, respectively, in the total spontaneous emission rate, which we verify by monitoring changes in the intensity of light emitted out the sides of the resonator as it is tuned.
