-Association of Arkansas Counties Faulkner, Sanford "Sandy" C. (1806-1874) (Fiddle Player)
Colonel Sandy Faulkner was a fiddle player, plantation owner, banker, and politician in Little Rock. He is credited with being the original "Arkansas Traveller." Some believe the tale to be make-believe, however, Faulkner told it as if it were true. In the tale, he is traveling through the Arkansas backwoods and comes upon a squatter sitting in front of his cabin playing the fiddle. The squatter is unfriendly at first, but warms up with the Traveller is able to play the next line of the song on the fiddle. The squatter shares his whiskey and has his wife prepare a meal of venison.
Faulkner wrote the music to the tune (in approx. 1850) which now is the official state historical song. He passed away in Little Rock on August 4, 1874. Faulkner County is named in his honor.

Nita Kucer's story is, in a large sense, representative of thousands of Czech immigrants who came to America following the Civil War. Arriving in Chicago with her parents in 1865, three-year-old Nita quickly adapts to the language and culture of the new country, while her parents struggle to reconcile present with past. Covering the years 1865 to the Spanish American War, The Land of Plenty is a panoramic history of the city including such events as the Chicago fire and the World's Columbian Exposition, as well as the day-to-day activities of the heroine, her family, and friends. The characters are generally one-dimensional, and historic events often receive only token treatment, but a basic view of Czech mores and folkways and the Czechs' problems of assimilation demonstrate somewhat the Czech contribution to the conglomerate of manners and modes which make up American culture. 433. French, Alice (Octave Thanet) (1850-1934) Lesbian local colorist Alice French wrote coded stories that celebrate independent, financially self-sufficient, women-centered women. French, born in Andover, Massachusetts, moved with her family in 1856 to Davenport, Iowa, where her mother continued her staunch advocacy of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her father became a wealthy manufacturer. Sponsor Message.
The oldest of six children from a financially and academically privileged background, a member of the Davenport Unitarian Church's founding family, Alice French's interest in club work led to the Presidency of the Iowa Society of Colonial Dames. She is described by George McMichael, her only biographer, as embracing conservative political views to protect traditional American values. He describes her as antilabor union, a xenophobe who portrayed foreigners as sinister figures, and a racist caricaturist. She also allegedly opposed prohibition and helped organize against the suffragists. This view of French contradicts the writer who satirized snobbery, class pride, and piously embraced martyrdoms of women to abusive husbands in her 1906 collection of stories
