WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY
The Ballad of Bouillabaisse
A STREET there is in Paris famous,
For which no rhyme our language yields,
The New Street of the Little Fields;
But still in comfortable case;
The which in youth I oft attended,
To eat a bowl of Bouillabaisse.
A sort of soup or broth, or brew,
Or hotchpotch, of all sorts of fishes,
That Greenwich never could outdo;
Green herbs, red peppers, mussels, saffern,
Soles, onions, garlic, roach, and dace; In that one dish of Bouillabaisse. And true philosophers, methinks, Who love all sorts of natural beauties, Should love good victuals and good drinks. And Cordelier or Benedictine Might gladly, sure, his lot embrace, Nor find a fast-day too afflicting Which served him up a Bouillabaisse. I wonder if the house still there is? Yes, here the lamp is, as before; Still opening oysters at the door. I recollect his droll grimace; And hope you liked your Bouillabaisse. The table still is in the nook; This well-known chair since last I took.

    Christmas Poetry
    The Mahogany Tree
      Christmas is here;
      Winds whistle shrill,
      Icy and chill,
      Little care we:
      Little we fear
      Weather without, Sheltered about The Mahogany Tree. Commoner greens, Ivy and oaks, Poets, in jokes, Sing, do you see? Good fellows' shins Here, boys, are found, Twisting around The Mahogany Tree. Once on the boughs Birds of rare plume Sang, in its bloom; Night birds are we: Here we carouse, Singing like them, Perched round the stem Of the jolly old tree. Here let us sport, Boys, as we sit; Laughter and wit Flashing so free. Sorrows, begone! Life and its ills, Duns and their bills, Bid we to flee. Life is but short When we are gone, Let them sing on

    "The charm of Thackeray's writing is that it is like talking -
    pleasant, sunny, half-trifling, half-earnest chat - in fact, a

    THE ENGLISH HUMOURISTS OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY.
    A Series of Lectures Delivered in England, Scotland, and the
    United States of America.
    In 1851 Thackeray delivered a series of lectures at Willis's Rooms, and re-delivered them in the United States during the years 1852 and 1853. Usually referred to as 'The Four Georges', these lectures were very popular for generations.
    He deals effortlessly and entertainingly with the lights of the 18th century: Swift; Congreve; Addison; Steele; Prior; Gay; Pope; Hogarth; Smollett; Fielding; Sterne; and Goldsmith.
    This particular edition appears to be quite scarce. "The humourous writer professes to awaken and direct
    your love, your pity, your kindness -
    your scorn for untruth, pretension, imposture -
    your tenderness for the weak, the poor, the oppressed,
    the unhappy"

    DINNER
    "Everything is done at dinner in the century in which we live, and it is by these dinners that men are governed." Charles Pierre Monselet, French journalist and author (1825-1888) "If the soup had been as warm as the wine, if the wine had been as old as the turkey, if the turkey had had a breast like the maid, it would have been a swell dinner." Duncan Hines, food and lodging critic (1880-1959) "After a good dinner, one can forgive anybody, even one's relatives." Oscar Wilde "One morning, as I went to the freezer door, I asked my wife, 'What should I take out for dinner?' Without a moment's hesitation, she replied, 'Me.'" anonymous "A man who can dominate a London dinner table can dominate the world." Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) "Americans are just beginning to regard food the way the French always have. Dinner is not what you do in the evening before something else. Dinner is the evening."

    The following excerpt was read by Dickens's literary rival, William Makepeace Thackeray, in New York City in 1852 and repeated by enterprising Chicago Fellowship member Jim Forsell in February 1996 at a Fellowship meeting honoring the birth of the Inimitable. This generous tribute to Dickens, at the time of the greatest rivalry between him and Thackeray, has been much admired and often quoted to Thackeray's credit. "There are creations of Mr. Dickens which seem to me to rank as personal benefits, figures so delightful, that one feels happier and better for knowing them, as one does for being brought into the society of very good men and women. The atmosphere in which these people live is wholesome to breathe in; you feel that to be allowed to speak to them is a personal kindness; you come away better for your contact with them; your hands seem cleaner from having the privilege of shaking theirs. "Was there ever a better charity sermon preached in the world than Dickens's Christmas Carol?

    William Makepeace Thackeray was born 18 July 1811, first and only child of Richmond Thackeray and Anne Becher Thackeray . He was born in India, where his father worked for the East India Company, and sent to school in England, as was the fashion for colonial-born children, in 1817. His father had died in 1815, and shortly after William left, she remarried to her first love, Captain Henry Carmichael-Smyth . They joined William in England in 1820. Like most English children, William was miserable at school. He wasn't good at sports, though he was fairly popular in spite of that, and suffered through two poor headmasters. He also had his nose broken during a boxing match with another student named George Venables . While in school he developed two habits that were to stay with him all his life: sketching and reading novels . He later attended Cambridge, where he lost a poetry contest to one

Most of Thackeray's major novels were published as monthly serials. Thackeray studied in a satirical and moralistic light upper- and middle-class English life - he was once seen as the equal of his contemporary Dickens, or even as his superior. "This I set as a positive truth. A woman with fair opportunities, and without a positive hump, may marry whom she likes." After his father died he was sent to home to England. He was educated at Charterhouse and at Trinity College, Cambridge. Thackeray abandoned his studies without taking a degree, having lost some of his inheritance of twenty thousand pounds through gambling. William Makepeace Thackeray
    Born in India but educated in England after his father's death, Thackeray saw journalism as a way to earn money. His love of art (he spent 4 years as a student in Paris) ended due to lack of funds. On his return to London he wrote for The Times New Monthly and Frazer's Magazine . His initial publications in The Paris Sketchbook were considered a failure (and written under pseudonyms). His column in Punch (from 1842) "Jeames' Diary" was very popular as it as society seen through the eyes of the butler. Novels such as "Vanity Fair" (1847), "Pendennis" (1848), "The Newcomers" (1853) made him famous. On his retirement he became editor of Cornhill Magazine which printed his later poems and novels. He also undertook lecture tours of America and England. Read on-line Buy from Amazon.com The Adventures of Major Gahagan The Bedford-Row Conspiracy Catherine The Great Hoggarty Diamond ... Email
