William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863)
William Makepeace Thackeray was born in Calcutta, where his father was employed in the East India Company. In his sixth year he was sent to England, and was educated at Charterhouse School, London, and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He spent some months in Weimar (1830), where he was introduced to Goethet In search of a career he began to read for the bar in London; however, he did not find law much to his taste. Later Thackeray studied drawing in Paris and became an able draughtsman, as may be seen from his collections of satirical drawings entitled Flore el Zephyr (1836), as well as from the plates with which he himself illustrated some of his books.

From 1851 Thackeray undertook lecturing tours, which were a great success, both in England and America. Thackeray's earlier work includes short tales, novels and sketches: Catherine (1839—40); A Shabby Genteel Story (1840), The Paris Sketch-book (1840); The Irish Sketch-book (1843); The Luck of Barry Lindon (1844). Among his later books two series of lectures proved to be of lasting importance: The English Humourists of the Eighteenth Century (1853) and The Four Georges (1855—56). His last novels The Adventures of Philip (1861—62) and the unfinished Denis Duval (published posthumously in 1864) are at present but little remembered.

William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863), British author. "De Juventute," The Roundabout Papers (1863). "If, in looking at the lives of princes, courtiers, men of rank and fashion, we must perforce depict them as idle, profligate, and criminal, we must make allowances for the rich men's failings, and recollect that we, too, were very likely indolent and voluptuous, had we no motive for work, a mortal's natural taste for pleasure, and the daily temptation of a large income. What could a great peer, with a great castle and park, and a great fortune, do but be splendid and idle?"
William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863), British author. "George the Third," The Four Georges (1855).

Thackeray, William Makepeace u r E Pronunciation Key Thackeray, William Makepeace , English novelist, b. Calcutta, India. He is important not only as a great novelist but also as a brilliant satirist. In 1830, Thackeray left Cambridge without a degree and later entered the Middle Temple to study law. In 1833 he became editor of a periodical, the National Standard, Fraser's. As a contributor to Punch he often parodied the false romantic sentiment pervading the fiction of his day. In 1848, Thackeray achieved widespread popularity with his humorous Book of Snobs and the same year rose to major rank among English novelists with Vanity Fair, a satirical panorama of upper-middle-class London life and manners at the beginning of the 19th cent. The novel contains many fascinating characters, particularly Becky Sharp, who, although clever and unscrupulous, is also extremely appealing. His reputation increased in 1850 with the completion of the partly autobiographical novel Pendennis.

    WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY
THACKERAY, WILLIAM MAKEPEACE In February 1829 Thackeray went to Trinity College, Cambridge, and in that year contributed some engaging lines on " Timbuctoo," the subject for the Prize Poem (the prize for which was won in that year by Tennyson), to a little paper called The Snob, a title which Thackeray afterwards utilized in the famous Book of Snobs. The first stanza has become tolerably well known, but is worth quoting as an early instance of the direct comic force afterwards employed by the author in verse and prose burlesques: " In Africaa quarter of the world Men's skins are black; their hair is crisp and curled; And somewhere there, unknown to public view, A mighty city lies, called Timbuctoo." In 1834 or at the end of 1833 Thackeray established himself in Paris in order to study art seriously. He had, like Clive in The Newcomes, shown talent as a caricaturist from his early boyhood. His gift proved of great value to him in illustrating much of his own literary work in a fashion which, despite all incorrectness of draughtsmanship, conveyed vivid suggestions that could not have been so well given by anyone but himself. Perhaps his pencil was at its best technically in such fantastic work as is found constantly in the initial letters which he frequently used for chapters in his various kinds of work, and in those drawings made for the amusement of some child friends which were^ the origin of The Rose and the Ring. In 1836'Thackeray married Isabella, daughter of Colonel Matthew Shawe. There were three daughters born of the marriage, one dying in infancy. The eldest daughter, Anne Isabella (b. 1837), married in 1877 Mr Richmond Ritchie, of the India Office, who in 1907 was created a K.C.B. She inherited literary talent from her father and wrote several charming works of fiction, notably Miss Angel (1875), and subsequently edited Thackeray's works and published some volumes of criticism and reminiscences. The younger daughter, Harriet Marian (b. 1840), married (Sir) Leslie Stephen in 1867 and died in 1875. Thackeray's own family life was early broken, for Mrs Thackeray, to quote Trollope, " became ill and her mind failed her, in 1840, and he became as it were a widower to the end of his days ; Mrs Thackeray did not die till 1892.
