BIOGRAPHY
JTB was the first American woman photo journalist. She was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on December 23, 1870, the daughter of Marie Antoinette (Bassett) Tarbox and John Nathaniel Tarbox. Her father, an inventor and entrepreneur, failed in business and JTB, after completing her education at the Collegiate Institute of Ontario, took a teaching position in Williamsburg, Massachusetts, in 1888. That same year she acquired her first camera, and in 1889 established Williamsburg's first photography studio on the front lawn of her house, using her weekends to take pictures of friends, students, family groups, barns, houses, and animals. In the fall of 1893 she moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts, to take up a new teaching position. There she met Alfred Tennyson Beals, whom she married in 1897.

History
The Collie dates back hundreds of years
The Collie dates back hundreds of years to the Scottish Highlands, where he was used for guarding the flock and herding. The early breeders kept no records, so the early historic details are somewhat muddy. There is speculation that the Rough Collie and the Smooth Collie had different origins, though they are presently classified as a long and short-haired version of the same breed.
Scots Colley Dog
In the early days he was called the Scots Colley Dog, Colley being a black sheep. The Rough Collie's lineage was especially influenced by a dog name Old Cockie, born in 1867 whose sable coloured coat can be seen in the modern Collie. Every Rough and Smooth Collie can also trace their ancestry back to a tricolour dog named Trefoil, born in 1873. The Rough Collie has been extremely popular, but not so with the Smooth Collie. The Smooth Collie may have died out, in fact, if it had not been for the efforts of a number of dedicated breeders. By the 1930's the Collie was thought to have been bred with the Borzoi, which gave it more nobility but also made it somewhat melancholy.
Queen Victoria
The early ancestors were brought to England and Scotland over 400 years ago. Queen Victoria kept a Rough Collie at Balmoral in 1860, and thanks to her enthusiasm for the breed, his popularity sky-rocketed in the herding circles and amongst the upper class. This popularity continued many years later with the writings of Albert Payson Terhune and the infamous television show "Lassie". The breed's popularity was so immense at one time, that huge sums of money would exchange hands for the best of the dogs. The highest price ever reputed to have been paid for a Rough Collie was for Ch. Parbold Piccolo to an American. Upon arriving at his new home in Milwaukee, Piccolo was allowed to freely roam around the property. He tragically disappeared that same day.

Albert Payson Terhune
Albert Payson Terhune, was born December 21, 1872, Newark, N.J. He was a great American novelist and short-story writer who became famous for his popular stories about dogs. After schooling in Europe, Terhune graduated from Columbia University in 1893, traveled in Egypt and Syria, and joined the staff of the New York Evening World in 1894. His first book was Syria from the Saddle (1896); his first novel, Dr. Dale (1900), was written in collaboration with his mother, herself a novelist. He published more than 12 books before he left the Evening World in 1916.
In 1919 appeared the first of his popular dog stories, Lad, a Dog, written at his farm near Pompton Lakes, where for the rest of his life he wrote, bred prize collies, fished, and hunted. He wrote more than 25 books after 1919, nearly all of them novels in which dogs played conspicuous parts, including Bruce (1920), The Heart of a Dog (1924), Lad of Sunnybank (1928), and A Book of Famous Dogs (1937). He died Feb. 18, 1942, near Pompton Lakes, N.J. Lodge: St. Cecile 568 (New York)
