    Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809 - 1892)
    Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892), English poet often regarded as the chief representative of the Victorian age in poetry. Tennyson succeeded Wordsworth as Poet Laureate in 1850. Alfred, Lord Tennyson was born on August 5, 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire. His father, George Clayton Tennyson, a clergyman and rector, suffered from depression and was notoriously absentminded. Alfred began to write poetry at an early age in the style of Lord Byron . After spending four unhappy years in school he was tutored at home. Tennyson then studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he joined the literary club 'The Apostles' and met Arthur Hallam, who became his closest friend. Tennyson published Poems, Chiefly Lyrical , in 1830, which included the popular "Mariana". His next book, Poems (1833), received unfavorable reviews, and Tennyson ceased to publish for nearly ten years. Hallam died suddenly on the same year in Vienna. It was a heavy blow to Tennyson. He began to write "In Memoriam", an elegy for his lost friend - the work took seventeen years. "The Lady of Shalott", "The Lotus-eaters" "Morte d'Arthur" and "Ulysses" appeared in 1842 in the two-volume Poems and established his reputation as a writer.

    Lord Alfred Baron Tennyson A Brief History of his life and work
    Click on image to view a larger version Tennyson was born in Somersby Rectory , Lincolnshire, August 5th, 1809 to the Reverend and Mrs. George Clayton Tennyson LL.D. He was one of twelve children, three of which were poets: Frederick Tennyson , Charles Tennyson-Turner and (himself) Alfred Baron Tennyson. The lineage of this poetically talented family traces back to the Tennysons d'Eyncourt. Both of his parents were considered to have poetic blood. He was brought up on dreams and books and as a child he played imaginatively at being chivalrous knights, which was then transferred onto slates in the form of poems. Alfred was a huge fan of Byron and despaired when he died. Even going so far as to carve "Byron is dead!" on the sandstone to mark what he saw as the end of the world. Tennyson's first poem: "The Flowers in the Garden", was instigated by his brother Charles and based on Thomson's "Seasons". It was the first time he realised that he could write poetry. Ironically, when a child, his grandfather told him his poetry never would earn him money. Little did his grandfather know how revered Alfred would become. He was successful from the beginning and earned ten pounds for his first volume of poetry (a lot of money in the early 19th century - certainly unheard of for a first volume). It was published by J and J Jackson, of Louth. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and in 1828 he earned a prize for "Timbuctoo" there. Whilst at college he became friends with Arthur Hallum (an invaluable alliance for his future promotion). Also he wrote "The Lover's Tale" (published 1879) whilst studying.

Stats Tennyson, one of twelve children and later a first baron, was born in Somersby, Lincolnshire. From 1875 he attended Louth grammar school, followed, in 1827, by Trinity College, Cambridge where he made perhaps his greatest friendship ever with Arthur Hallam and joined the undergraduate club 'The Apostles'. Here, in 1829, Tennyson - having already published some poems, prior to 1827, anonymously in the ironically entitled Poems by Two Brothers (actually written by Alfred, Frederick and Charles) - won the Chancellor's Gold Medal for English with his poem 'Timbuctoo'.
    In 1830 Tennyson and Hallam, along with other Apostle members, travelled to Spain to help in the failed revolution against Ferdinand VII, after which, in 1831, the death of Tennyson's father and the discovery of his debts led, in part, to Tennyson's leaving Cambridge without taking his degree. By this time his Poems. Chiefly Lyrical (1830) had been published and Hallam had become engaged to Tennyson's sister Emily.
    In 1833 the second volume entitled Poems was published, but in the same year Hallam came to a tragic end in Venice, caused by a ruptured blood vessel. After this it was to be seven years before Tennyson published again in 1842, during which time he met, fell in love with and became engaged to another Emily; Emily Sellwood, the sister of one of his brother's brides.

    (Born 6 August 1809-1892) "Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
    The flying cloud the frosty light;
    The year is dying in the night;
    Ring out, wild bells, and let him die
    Ring out the old, Ring in the new,
    Ring happy bells, across the snow:
    The year is going, let him go;
    Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out the grief that saps the mind, For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind. - Alfred Lord Tennyson In Memoriam of Hallam, which was published in 1950. The most popular poet of the British era, Tennyson avoided public life, got married in 1850 and lived quietly in country home at Farring-ford on the isle of Wight and Aldworth in Surrey. Tennyson's long list of works showed his consistent inspiration and creative vitality, beginning with Poems, Chiefly Lyrical and extending to The Death of Oenone and Other Poems, published after his death more than 60 years later. He was awarded the title of Baron Tennyson in 1883 by Queen Victoria. His full title was Baron of Aldworth and Farringfor. Tennyson died on Oct.6, 1892 and was buried in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey. Tennyson's Poems: His influential place came to light largely from his concern about the vital issues confronting Victorian England. He reveals his sense of political responsibility in such patriotic verses as '
