Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson of Aldworth and Freshwater - Poet (1809-1892)
Alfred Tennyson was born on 6 August 1809, the fourth of twelve children born to George and Elizabeth Tennyson. George Tennyson, the rector of Somersby in Lincolnshire, was notoriously absent-minded and was given to fits of severe depression and violent outbursts, made worse by drinking. The family lived in straitened circumstances made harder to bear by the fact that George had been disinherited in favour of his younger brother who lived in comparative wealth. Alfred had continued to write during his time at Cambridge, and published two volumes of poetry which were quietly but well received. However, in 1833 his Poems received terrible reviews, which killed sales of the book and made Alfred reluctant to publish new work for years afterwards for fear of the reception he would get. His problems were compounded by the sudden death of his friend Hallam. The double blow plunged Alfred into a depression which would last for years, and from which he would never fully recover. Despite his poor mental state, Alfred continued to write poems, including the verses that would eventually form
