Examples: France, Troyes, Dance of Death , 16th century, incunabulum , illustrated with hand- colored woodcuts , Saxon State Library, Dresden, Germany. Based on a fourteenth-century morality poem by an unidentifiable author, the Dance of Death evolved into a set of illustrated verses depicting a dialogue between Death and people of all social ranks. The theme was very popular in 15th and 16th century Christian Europe, reminding the living that rank and station in life were meaningless in the face of death. The illustrations show representations of ecclesiastical and secular society being carried off by Death. The pages displayed here show the Pope, the Emperor, a cardinal, and a king. Re: [seul-edu] [Fwd: Debian-kids goals (draft)]: cartoon characters
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/etext94/algif10.zip The key is to search for "illustrations" in the title. This was not at first apparent to me. I was looking for keywords in the "Notes" field, thinking perhaps illustrations would be included with the etexts themselves. Apparently some PDF versions do contain cover art, but collections of images are entered in under a seperate title. Still, "illustrations" only turned up two matches, so it seems that there is much work to be done in this area (unless they're hiding the images somewhere and my search strategy just sucks ;) Anyway, before we re-invent the wheel, an exhaustive search should be done to determine if there aren't already "free image" projects out there that meet our needs. I'm beginning to poke through my favourite portals to see what I can find. I'll post anything else that turns up. Ben nSLUG http://www.nslug.ns.ca

Alice Tenniel's Alice: "Slothrop is just settling down next to a girl in a pre-war Worth frock and with a face like Tenniel's Alice, same forehead, nose, hair [...]" (p.247) Over his lifetime, Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) was responsible for more than 2000 cartoons in the comic magazine, Punch. Nevertheless, it is for his illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Alice books that he is best remembered. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was published in 1864, and Through the Looking Glass in 1871. Tenniel is said to have taken on illustrating Alice's Adventures in Wonderland because there were plenty of animals in it and he liked animals. It turned out to be the most disagreeable task of his career. Carroll was a tyrant about every aspect of his book leading Tenniel to reportedly exclaim to an other illustrator, "Dodgson is impossible! You will never put up with that concetited old Don for more than a week!" Tenniel long refused to do the illustrations for Through the Looking Glass , but finally relented. Even then there was particular fuss by Carroll over the illustration for 'Jabberwocky'. That illustration, which was to have been the frontispiece for the book, was buried in the text at the response of various 'married lady friends' to a circular from Carroll. After finishing with

Children's Literature
Island 3: Mid-Century Developments - Some Women Writers and the Renascence of Wonder Anna Maria Hall Hall (1800-1881) was one of the most prolific Victorian writers for children, best known for such moral tales as Grandmamma's Pockets (1849) and for her editorship of the annual, the Juvenile Forget Me Not (1828-1837). Displayed here is her beautifully-produced giftbook Midsummer Eve: A Fairytale of Loving and Being Loved (London: J. C. Hotten, 1870). The magic lantern and Uncle Tom's Cabin Perhaps because of its strong story-line, clear morality, and the good central child character, Eva St. Clair, the American abolitionist novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (first serialized 1851-52) was soon pirated and abridged to become a children's classic. Although the book presents both African-American and white characters through melodrama and stereotype, the novel has received increasing critical reappraisal in recent years. Displayed here on a "sub-island" is a complete set of Victorian hand-painted glass slides of incidents from the novel, designed for an instructive magic-lantern presentation. Collection of Patrick Scott.

John Tenniel, the son of a dancing-master, was born in London in 1820. Tenniel attended the Royal Academy but left in disgust at the quantity of teaching he received. When Tenniel was sixteen he began having his paintings exhibited at the Suffolk Street Galleries. He was soon recognised as a talented artist and he received several commissions, including the production of a fresco for the House of Lords
Tenniel had some cartoons accepted by Punch Magazine and one showing Lord John Russell as David with his sword of truth attacking Cardinal Wiseman, as the

Sir John Tenniel, 1820 - 1914:
Book Illustrator, Political Cartoonist and Watercolour Artist
Tenniel in a self-portrait dated 1889
During his long life Tenniel exhibited paintings, produced a weekly cartoon practically without a break for almost fifty years, and contributed a large number of illustrations to literature during one of the most fruitful and innovative periods of the medium's history. His life covers the whole of Victoria's reign, with generous overlaps into the preceding Georgian and succeeding Edwardian eras. As both artist and observer he was involved in the mainstream art world of his day, beginning his career with serious ambitions as a monumental fresco painter, and exhibiting at the Royal Academy and at the Society of British Artists' premises in Suffolk Street. His working life, from the year of his first exhibition to the date of his retirement from Punch , stretches from 1835 to 1901, while his activities in book illustration took place between 1842 and 1878. Finally, while his work on Punch (1850-1901) diverted his energies from his early 'high art' aspirations, it brought him into week-by-week journalistic contact with the social and political life of his day, and made him one of the most influential commentators on it.
