Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) A Cry A November Night A Prayer A Winter Night ... Wild Asters
A Cry Oh, there are eyes that he can see,
And hands to make his hands rejoice,
But to my lover I must be
Only a voice. Oh, there are breasts to bear his head,
And lips whereon his lips can lie,
But I must be till I am dead
Only a cry.

A November Night There! See the line of lights,
A chain of stars down either side the street
Why can't you lift the chain and give it to me, A necklace for my throat? I'd twist it round And you could play with it. You smile at me As though I were a little dreamy child Behind whose eyes the fairies live. . . . And see, The people on the street look up at us All envious. We are a king and queen, Our royal carriage is a motor bus, We watch our subjects with a haughty joy. . . . How still you are! Have you been hard at work And are you tired to-night? It is so long

TAWFIQ, Pasha Muhammed ET 1852 - Muhammed Tawfiq Pasha ibn Ismail ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad 'Ali was the hereditary Khedive of Egypt from 1879-1892. His reputation as a lover of boys did not bother the British colonial powers, who favored Tawfiq even though his own people did not support him.

Life has loveliness to sell, All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up Holding wonder like a cup.
Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night.
Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstasy Give all you have been, or could be. Notes ] sell: to part with in return for something, to barter a valuable for a thing of little worth. See OED 7b, which cites Genesis 25:29-34: starving Esau "sells" his birthright or inheritance to Jacob for food, an act that Esau justifies by saying, "I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?".

    Tribute To Sara Teasdale
    Collected Poems
Poetry, as defined in the dictionary, is lofty thought or impassioned feeling expressed in imaginative words. A poet is then a person who has the gift of poetic thought, imagination and creation, together with eloquence of expression. I have always loved words and the beauty they possessed in the hands of a skilled artisan. But it wasn't until I discovered Sara Teasdale in my early teens that I realized their true strength. In Sara's hands, words transformed into the warm, rich colors of the heart...sang of the clear, direct song from the soul. In her simplicity was genius. This is my tribute to her.
