Scope and Content
This collection consists of autograph letters and envelopes. The majority are letters to Mark Lemon from writers such as William Makepeace Thackeray, Douglas Jerrold, Richard Doyle, John Forster, Shirley Brooks, and several others. A very valuable part of this collection are the six autograph and signed letters of Charles Dickens to his friend Mark Lemon, inviting him to dinner and discussing his writing. Also, this collection includes letters from and to a variety of correspondents, Mark Lemon's Circle, including John Forster, Alfred B. Garrod, Sir Stratford Canning, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Emma C. Roberts, and others; and autograph envelopes from W. Harrison Ainsworth and others. Finally, five original pencil drawings attributed to "Phiz" (Hablot K. Browne?) are present. The collection is arranged chronologically. This collection was purchased from book dealer David Holmes by Kent State University Libraries and the Department of English on December 1995.

Off-Stage : theatre collections at the University of Nottingham
Dorothy Johnston
Weston Gallery, D H Lawrence Pavilion, Lakeside Arts Centre
The exhibition, curated by the Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections , covers a wide range. The earliest manuscript is a text of a play called Hengist, King of Kent , by Thomas Middleton (1570-1627), a manuscript which is currently the subject of a new scholarly edition. This comes from the Portland Literary Collection, a resource usually associated with poetry and song of the late seventeenth century but providing also a number of plays and dramatic pieces, particularly titles written by or associated with William Cavendish, the 1st Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne. By contrast, from the last decades of the twentieth century, the display includes examples of local and London theatre programmes, in this case from the extensive theatre archive and library of Sir Hugh Willatt (1909-1996), former Secretary of the Arts Council. Programme evidence also has prominence on the board about Anton Chekhov, the Russian writer, who is one of the few individual playwrights featured in the display. This draws on the Patrick Miles Chekhov Collection, which records the performance of Chekhov works in Britain.

Recognized HTML document 68 MEMORIES OF MY LIFE Scholarship soon after joining the University. At that time he was eccentric, very short-sighted, and J ohnsonian in appearance, but these peculiarities wore . off so much that, on his calling on me some years afterwards, fashionably dressed and polished in manner, I did not at first recognise him. He took an active part in a small Epigram Club which flourished for a while and then ceased, but which gave rise to some good verses. I recollect the roll of the first line of one by Maine-" King Daniel of Dettinane that referred to a recent action of Daniel O'Connell. Tom Taylor (1817-1880), "Dramatist and Editor of Punch," was full of vigour and versatility, but a few years older than those of whom I have been speaking. He had recently been elected Fellow of the College. In those days Punch was newly started, and Tom Taylor thought he could do better, so he founded a weekly comic paper called Puck, for which he endeavoured to obtain contributors. It was fairly good, but did not live long. Many years later he became editor of the very periodical he then wished to crush. I saw much of Joseph and E. Kay, half-brothers of Sir James Kay-Shuttleworth (1804-1877), who was the" Founder of English Popular Education." Joseph Kay (1821-1878), "Economist," was appointed "Travelling Bachelor," a University post that at that time attracted little competition, because the conditions attached to its tenure were inconvenient to most rising men. Its possession, therefore, carried little weight. But Joseph Kay utilised to the full his position of " Travelling Bachelor of the University of Cambridge " in obtaining help abroad, and he wrote and published
