Author
Poet and travel writer Bayard Taylor produced popular chronicles of his journeys at home and abroad, as well as novels and collections of poetry. After he went to the Middle East, India, China, and Japan in 1851 1853, he published three volumes that mark his zenith as a travel writer, including The Lands of the Saracen; or, Pictures of Palestine, Asia Minor, Sicily, and Spain
This image of Taylor was painted in New York City by his friend, artist Thomas Hicks. In the painting Taylor wears clothing that he acquired in Egypt. He is seen with Achmet, his servant on his Middle East travels, whose portrait is based on a daguerreotype. To paint the background view of Damascus, the artist relied on drawings made by Taylor. Hicks, who was the nephew of Quaker painter Edward Hicks, exhibited the portrait at the National Academy of Design in 1856 as "A Morning in Damascus".

Bayard Taylor Who Was She? Introduction
Poet, born in Pennsylvania of Quaker descent, began to write by the time he was 12. Apprenticed to a printer, he found the work uncongenial and, purchasing his indentures, went to Europe on a walking tour, and thereafter he was a constant and enterprising traveller. After his return from Europe he edited a paper, got on the staff of the New York Tribune , and published several books of travel and poetry, among which are Views Afoot (1846), an account of his travels in Europe, and El Dorado (1850), which described the Californian gold-fields. After some experience and some disappointments in the diplomatic sphere, he settled down to novel-writing, his first venture in which, Hannah Thurston (1863), was very successful, and was followed by (1864), partly autobiographical, and The Story of Kenneth (1866). His poetic works include Poems of the Orient Masque of the Gods Lars The Prophet (1874), a tragedy, Prince Deucalion , and Home Pastorals Faust is perhaps his best work. He was a man of untiring energy and great ability and versatility, but tried too many avenues to fame to advance very far in any of them. Created by PanEris using Melati Back Home Email this ... BEDOUIN SONG by: Bayard Taylor (1825-1878)
    ROM the Desert I come to thee
    On a stallion shod with fire;
    And the winds are left behind
    In the speed of my desire.
    Under thy window I stand,
    And the midnight hears my cry:
    I love thee, I love but thee,
    With a love that shall not die
    Till the sun grows cold,
    And the stars are old,
    And the leaves of the Judgment Book Unfold!
    Look from thy window and see
    My passion and my pain;
    I lie on the sands below,
    And I faint in thy disdain.
    Let the night-winds touch thy brow
    With the heat of my burning sigh,
    And melt thee to hear the vow
    Of a love that shall not die
    Till the sun grows cold,
    And the stars are old,
    And the leaves of the Judgment Book Unfold!
    My steps are nightly driven,
    By the fever in my breast,
    To hear from thy lattice breathed
    The word that shall give me rest.
    Open the door of thy heart,
    And open thy chamber door,
    And my kisses shall teach thy lips
    The love that shall fade no more
    Till the sun grows cold,
    And the stars are old,
    And the leaves of the Judgment Book Unfold!

TYRE by: Bayard Taylor (1825-1878)
    HE wild and windy morning is lit with lurid fire;
    The thundering surf of ocean beats on the rocks of Tyre,
    Beats on the fallen columns and round the headland roars,
    And hurls its foamy volume along the hollow shores,
    And calls with hungry clamor, that speaks its long desire:
    "Where are the ships of Tarshish, the mighty ships of Tyre?"
    Within her cunning harbor, choked with invading sand,
    No galleys bring their freightage, the spoils of every land,
    And like a prostrate forest, when autumn gales have blown,
    Her colonnades of granite lie shattered and o'erthrown;
    And from the reef the pharos no longer flings its fire,
    To beacon home from Tarshish the lordly ships of Tyre.
    Where is thy rod of empire, once mighty on the waves,
    Thou that thyself exalted, till Kings became thy slaves?
    Thou that didst speak to nations, and saw thy will obeyed,
    Whose favor made them joyful, whose anger sore afraid,
    Who laid'st thy deep foundations, and thought them strong and sure,
    And boasted midst the waters, Shall I not aye endure?

A STORY OF AMERICAN LIFE.
G. P. Putnam, New York : 1863 464 p. + Publisher's ads (2 p.). 12mo. 19 cm. Contemporary binding with a black morocco spine over marbled boards. All edges marbled. Bayard Taylor was one of the most celebrated writers of his time. His travel-writings are still widely read. He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Apprenticed to a printer, he wrote a book of poems, and then visited Europe, and then gained a post as a traveling correspondent for the 'New York Tribune'.
This American tale was probably composed while he was Secretary to the Legation at St. Petersburg. "I do not rest the interest of the book on its slender plot, but on the fidelity with which it represents certain types of characters and phases of society. That in it which most resembles caricature is oftenest the transcript of actual fact... which may now and then be heard in almost any country community of the Northern and Western States." Nineteenth Century American Sonnets
For some commentary on the American sonnet through 1930, see a General Survey of the American Sonnet by Lewis Sterner. The first American sonnets were written by the Revolutionary War general David Humphreys in the last quarter of the 18th century and were not published until 1804. Some of the better known American sonneteers of mid-century were Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) (the Romantic link in the Sonnet Central chain), William Cullen Bryant Henry Wadsworth Longfellow John Greenleaf Whittier Jones Very ... Frederick Goddard Tuckerman (1821-1873), and Emma Lazarus (1849-1887). Also included here are many works by lesser known poets. Many of these more obscure works are taken from late 19th century anthologies, so any help with years of birth/death for the writers listed at the bottom of the page is appreciated. Here are some selections from the introduction to American Sonnets (1889), edited by William Sharp "It is, therefore, significant that in contemporary American verse, technically inferior to our own [British] as, in the main, it undoubtedly is, the motives The career of George Santayana (1863-1952), like that of Thomas Hardy, bridged the centuries; included here are his philosophical sonnets from the late 1800s.

http://www.tarzanajoe.com/page3.html
The Poet of the Month is Bayard Taylor...an extraordinary man, a "man of letters" as the phrase used to go. He wrote poetry now considered old fashioned in the familiar forms...the sonnet and the ballad, the epic and the ode. His lines rhymed. He was a master of the well-considered notion and the well-turned phrase. His poems were direct, with a clarity of expression now considered immature. After all, if the audience can't tell what you are saying, they won't be able to guess what you don't know. Oh, Poets! And students!. Consider, in the quiet moment between Play Station and DVD, the value of well- wrought words and fond memories. Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) The Song of the Camp By Bayard Taylor "GIVE us a song!" the soldiers cried, The outer trenches guarding, When the heated guns of the camps allied Grew weary of bombarding. The dark Redan, in silent scoff, Lay, grim and threatening, under; And the tawny mound of the Malakoff No longer belched its thunder. There was a pause. A guardsman said, "We storm the forts to-morrow;
