Peach Blossom Shangri-la (Tao Hua Yuan Ji) By Tao Yuanming [1] During the Taiyuan era [2] of the Jin Dynasty [3] there was a man of Wuling [4] who made his living as a fisherman. Once while following a stream he forgot how far he had gone. He suddenly came to a grove of blossoming peach trees. It lined both banks for several hundred paces and included not a single other kind of tree. Petals of the dazzling and fragrant blossoms were falling everywhere in profusion. During the Taiyuan era [2] of the Jin Dynasty [3] there was a man of Wuling [4] who made his living as a fisherman. Once while following a stream he forgot how far he had gone. He suddenly came to a grove of blossoming peach trees. It lined both banks for several hundred paces and included not a single other kind of tree. Petals of the dazzling and fragrant blossoms were falling everywhere in profusion. Thinking this place highly unusual, the fisherman advanced once again in wanting to see how far it went. [1] Chinese nature poet, c. 365-427. This prose story is one of the poet's most well-known works.
[3] 265-420 (actually two sequential dynasties, the "Western" and the "Eastern").
[4] A place in present-day Hunan Province. The peach trees stopped at the stream's source, where the fisherman came to a mountain with a small opening through which it seemed he could see light. Leaving his boat, he entered the opening. At first it was so narrow that he could barely pass, but after advancing a short distance it suddenly opened up to reveal a broad, flat area with imposing houses, good fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry trees, bamboo, and the like. The fisherman saw paths extending among the fields in all directions, and could hear the sounds of chickens and dogs. Men and women working in the fields all wore clothing that looked like that of foreign lands. The elderly and children all seemed to be happy and enjoying themselves.

Returning to Live in the Country - 1 of 5
Young, I was always free of common feeling.
It was in my nature to love the hills and mountains.
Mindlessly I was caught in the dust-filled trap.
Waking up, thirty years had gone.
The caged bird wants the old trees and air.
Fish in their pool miss the ancient stream.
I plough the earth at the edge of South Moor.
Keeping life simple, return to my plot and garden. My place is hardly more than a few fields. My house has eight or nine small rooms. Elm-trees and Willows shade the back. Plum-trees and Peach-trees reach the door. Misted, misted the distant village. Drifting, the soft swirls of smoke. Somewhere a dog barks deep in the winding lanes. A cockerel crows from the top of the mulberry tree. No heat and dust behind my closed doors. My bare rooms are filled with space and silence.

Tao Qian (T'ao Ch'ien, T'ao Yuan-ming) 365-427
Poet of the Eastern Jin dynasty and generally regarded as being one of the foremost pre-Tang poets. A native of Chaisang (present-day Jiangxi), Tao's family belonged to the Xi minority, and although it boasted some illustrious forebears was poor by the time of the poet's birth. Around the age of 30, Tao served in local government but resigned his post not long afterwards. Other postings followed, but these too were of short duration. He spent some 22 years in retirement, supporting his family by farming. Over 120 pieces of Tao's writing have survived, many of them written in a philosophical vein. He was a precursor of a type of pastoral landscape poetry known as tianyuan shi , and favored themes such as drinking and rustic life. Tao is also renowned for two prose works, Taohua yuan ji [A Record of Peach-blossom spring] about a utopia untouched by the ravages of civilization and Wuliu xiansheng zhuan [Biography of Mr Five Willows]. The orthodox Confucianism of the Han Dynasty that was only able to comment the old canonical books and to produce a sterile officialdom, was thoroughly discredited by the end of Later Han. Retiring from governmental offices became the normal way of life for the literati and the scholarship. The most famous representatives of this attitude were the "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove" ( Zhulin Qixian 竹林七賢: Ruan Ji 阮籍, Xi Kang 嵇康, Shan Tao 山濤, Xiang Xiu 向秀, Liu Ling 劉伶, Wang Rong 王戎, and Ruan Xian 阮咸) that engaged in highly sophisticated discussions ("pure discussions"

Tao Yuanming (365 - 427) Tao Yuanming (365 - 427) was born in Caisang of Xunyang (in the southwest of today¡¯s Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province). Born of a strained family, he read a wide range of books in his childhood. Reluctant to meddle in the official circle, he lived a reticent life in the countryside for the last two decades of his life. His poems, essays and verse essays ranked at the top in the Jin Dynasty. His 120 odd meditative and pastoral poems, mostly five-syllabic, exerted tremendous influence on such great Tang and Song poets as Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi, Su Shi and Lu You. back previous page next page home page

3 Poems After Tao Yuanming by David Young 1. Spending the Day by the River Xie New Year’s Day
and suddenly I’m sixty, my life getting ready
to melt back where it came from thinking of that
stirs up my heart makes me enjoy
this day I’m given perfect weather
cloudless sky we sit beside this river
that has so far to run watching the bright mullet
move in the weak current listen to calling gulls
that cross the quiet valley look out across the marshes
that stretch into the distance gazing all the way to
Layered Wall Mountain— maybe not so gorgeous as the famous Kunlun peaks but easily the most majestic thing in sight. I brought a jar of wine to entertain my friends— raising our filled beakers we drink each other’s health don’t know if we will ever all get back together after a few cups all my thoughts sail loose all my millennial worries drop off and float away I find my full contentment in this very moment all those dark tomorrows lost to view. 2. I teach Chinese literature in translation, and a few other things, at the University of North Carolina, and I've used this in class since it came into print. Students who have slept thru earlier Chinese literature snap awake to these. I have called T'ao Ch'ien the first modern poet( in the world). Hinton, one our best translators, makes a good case for my assertion. Since you're here you might note how many of the top new translations from Chinese come from the same publisher... Copper Canyon.

    Mount Lushan
    cctv.com 08-16-2003 15:51
Look like either ridges or peaks, assuming different appearances. Don't know the true faces of Lushan, only because being in the midst. Su Dongpo The mist in Mount Lushan is highly volatile. Su Dongpo, a scholar in the Song Dynasty, wrote this poem about Mount Lushan: "Look like either ridges or peaks, assuming different appearances. Don't know the true faces of Lushan, only because being in the midst." This is probably the best-known poem about Mount Lushan. While admiring the landscapes3 of Mount Lushan, Su Dongpo acquired a better understanding of life. Mist is well connected with Mount Lushan. Is that the reason many people lived there as hermits over the past hundreds of years? Hanyang Peak The Hanyang Peak is the highest peak in Mount Lushan. It is said that Da Yu sat here over 4,000 years ago, observing the floods of the Yangtze River and working out plans for harnessing the Jiujiang River. He led the people in successfully curbing floods. So this place was named King Yu Cliff. Sima Qian, a historian of the Han Dynasty, paid his respects to Da Yu in Mount Lushan. He included Mount Lushan in his Historical Records. That was the earliest written record of the mount. Another story tells us about the other names of Mount Lushan. It is said that Kuang Su in the Western Zhou Dynasty had a thatched hut in Mount Lushan and gave himself up to austere religious discipline. When the Zhou Emperor was told about Kuang Su, he wanted Kuang to leave the mount and help him. But Kuang simply refused. The emperor had people search for him in the mount. When they found Kuang's hut, he had already ascended to heaven and become immortal. So the mount was named Kuanglu or Kuangshan.
