Rabindranath Tagore

May 7 ~  Life's Rhythmic Joy Heart of God
"The same s t r e a m of life that runs t h r o u g h the world runs through my veins night and day in r h y t h m i c measure. It is the same life that shoots in joy through the d u s t of the earth into numberless w a v e s of flowers ~ Rabindranath Tagore We are all a part of the same, great body. The beat, our beat, unifies our hearts and our spirits with love and light. Listen, feel, and celebrate the connection Isn't it comforting to know that we are a part of something truly miraculous? Hindu poet philosopher , and artist Sir Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) wrote Gitanjali and The Religion of Man and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, the first Asian to receive this honor. "The mountain remains unmoved at seeming defeat by the mist," he once said. The youngest of 14 children, he wrote his first poem when he was seven. His beautiful and poignant writings played a critical role in India 's cultural emergence in the latter 19th century. "The world speaks to me in colors , my soul answers in music ," he said.

http://www.lokpriya.com/personalities/political/past/tagore.html
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) Born in Calcutta, into a wealthy family, the son of the Philosopher Maharishi Debendranath Tagore. His name in Bengali is Rabindranath Thakur. Influenced by his cousin Jyoti Parkesh, who showed him how to write poetry with fourteen syllables, he began to write poetry as a child; his first book appeared when he was 17 years old. After a brief stay in England (1878) to study law, he returned to India, where he rapidly became the most important and popular author of the colonial era, writing poetry, short stories, novels, and plays. He composed several hundred popular songs and in 1929 also began painting. A dedicated internationalist and educator, Tagore established a school (1901) in his estate, Shantiniketan, in Bengal, to teach a blend of Eastern and Western philosophies. In 1921 his school was expanded into an international university, Visva-Bharati. He also traveled and lectured throughout the world.
Tagore wrote primarily in Bengali, but translated many of his works into English himself; critics agree they are much more effective in the original. Tagore's writing is highly majestic, deeply religious and imbued with his love of nature and his homeland. He was awarded the 1913 Nobel Prize in literature. His Collected Poems and Plays were published in 1966.
In 1915 he was knighted by the British King George V. Tagore renounced his knighthood in 1919 following the Amritsar massacre of 400 Indian demonstrators by British troops.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) India's National Movement for freedom was accompanied by a large wave of social, educational and economic awareness throughout the nation. Tagore, one of the foremost thinkers in the country at the time spent time in building educational infrastructure. A man of true talent, his contribution to the freedom movement is significant. Gandhi has called him Gurudev (The Supreme Teacher). Tagore who gave us our national anthem wrote - " I have loved India and sought to serve her not because of her geographical magnitude, not because of her great past, but because of my faith in her today and my belief that she will stand for truth and freedom and the higher things of life".

Tagaore won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Two years later he was awarded the knighthood, but he surrendered it in 1919 as a protest against the Massacre of Amritsar, where British troops killed some 400 Indian demonstrators. Tagore's influence over Gandhi and the founders of modern India was enormous, but his reputation in the West as a mystic has perhaps mislead his Western readers to ignore his role as a reformer and critic of colonialism. "When one knows thee, then alien there is none, then no door is shut. Oh, grant me my prayer that I may never lose touch of the one in the play of the many." His mother, Sarada Devi, died when Tagore was very young - he realized that she will never come back was when her body was carried through a gate to a place where it was burned. Tagore's grandfather had established a huge financial empire for himself. He helped a number of public projects, such as Calcutta Medical College. The Tagores tried to combine traditional Indian culture with Western ideas; all the children contributed significantly to Bengali literature and culture. However, in
