The Histories Book Three A World Convulsed (36-48) 36. A few days after Caecina's departure been appointed without the passing of a formal act of abrogation. The shortness of the term was not in itself a novelty, as Caninius Rebilus had been consul for one day magistrate in the dictatorship of Julius Caesar when rewards for services in the civil war were being hurriedly distributed. 38. It was at this period that Junius Blaesus died. The news caused a great stir. The account which has come down to us is the following. Vitellius was lying seriously ill in the Servilian Park There was no point in being afraid of Vespasian: from him they were shielded by the many legions of the garrison of Germany, by many loyal and stout-hearted provinces, and by vast areas of land and sea. It was in the capital and his own intimate circle that the emperor must guard against a traitor who boasted that he was descended from the Junii and Antonii, and who by affability and free spending sought to gain publicity among the troops as member of a ruling family. He was the centre of public attention, while Vitellius, heedless of friends and enemies alike, nursed a rival who contemplated the emperor's sufferings from the convenient distance of a banqueting table. Such untimely festivity should be repaid by a night of misery and death, in which he would learn to his cost that Vitellius was still alive and still emperor, and in the event of death had a son to succeed him.

AD 55 - 117 THE little that is known about the life of Tacitus is provided by allusions in his own writings and the letters addressed to him by his intimate friend, Pliny the Younger. When Tacitus began his " Histories ", somewhere about his forty-fifth year, he related his life to the empire that was to be the burden of his narrative: "I myself knew nothing of Galba, of Otho, or of Vitellius, either from benefits or from injuries. I Could not deny that my elevation was begun by Vespasian, augmented by Titus, and still further advanced by Domitian.... I have reserved as an employment for my old age, should my life be long enough, a subject at once more fruitful and less anxious in the reign of the Divine Nerva and the empire of Trajan, enjoying the rare happiness of times, when we may think what we please, and express what we think." The influential part of Tacitus' education took place during the early part of Vespasian's reign. It is possible that, like his friend, Pliny, he was trained in rhetoric by Quintillian, for whom Vespasian had founded the first public chair of eloquence at Rome. Tacitus himself records how zealous he was for achievement and how diligently he pursued and studied the leading orators. It is not known on what occasion he began his own political career, but he won renown quickly. Pliny, only a few years his junior, recalls in a famous letter that in his youth Tacitus seemed of all the eminent men then active the most worthy of imitation.

This article is about the historian Tacitus. For the Emperor Tacitus, see Marcus Claudius Tacitus Publius or Gaius Cornelius Tacitus (born around AD - died around AD ), was a Roman historian. His major works - the Annals and the Histories - took for their subject the history of the Roman Empire The Annals ab excessu Divi Augusti ) was Tacitus' final work, covering the period from the death of Augustus Caesar in AD . He wrote at least 16 books, but books 7-10 and parts of books 5, 6, 11 and 16 are missing. Book 6 ends with the death of Tiberius and books 7-12 presumably covered the reigns of Caligula and Claudius . The remaining books cover the reign of Nero , perhaps until his death in June or until the end of that year, to connect with the Histories . The second half of book 16 is missing. We do not know whether Tacitus completed the work or whether he wrote any further associated books. Of the Histories only the first four books and 26 chapters of the fifth book have survived, covering the year

In 81, under Titus , he began his political career as quaestor . He advanced steadily through the cursus honorum , gaining acclaim as a lawyer and orator ; his skill in public speaking gave a marked irony to his cognomen Tacitus silent ). He survived Domitian's reign of terror that he was serving in the provinces from c. 89 to c. 93 doubtless helped and from a senator he advanced to the consulship in AD . In the same year he reached the height of his fame as an orator when he delivered the funeral oration for the famous old soldier Verginius Rufus. In the following year he wrote and published his three minor works, after which he returned to practicing law. In

Tacitus grew up during a the reign of Nero, and may have been a teenager when Nero died and the Roman empire was plunged into civil war. In his later years he became interested in writing an unbiased account of those times, starting his account just before Tiberius came to the throne. We do not have a complete account of either the Annals or the Histories, but what has been preserved provides an interesting look at Roman life, written by one who lived close to those times.
