TACITUS, Cornelius Publius The Annales of Cornelius Tacitus. The Description of Germanie [bound with] The End of Nero and Beginning of Galba. Foure Bookes of the Histories of Cornelius Tacitus. The Life of Agricola. London, John Norton, 1604 Two works in one, folio; a good copy in contemporary dark calf with original spine label, woodcut initials, clipping of margin notes in second work, hinges weak and cracked. Second edition of the Annales and third of The End of Nero, as issued, in a translation which is thought to have influenced Shakespeare.
This collection of the works of Tacitus was one of the primary sources for political thought in Elizabethan and Jacobean England. The Annales, Tacitus's greatest work, is translated by Grenewey, who dedicated the work to the Earl of Essex in light of his 'honorable vertues whereof the world is both witnesse and judge'. Incredibly, the dedication stands in this 1604 edition, despite Essex's 1601 execution for treason.
In addition to the Annales, this compilation also includes all of Tacitus's main works. Of particular note is Germanie, the only ethnographic study from the ancient world, and Henry Savile's translation of Agricola, concerning the governor of Rome who completed the conquest of Britain.A key volume in English political thought.
Lowndes, p. 2568; STC, 23645.

PAX ROMANA: The "Roman Peace"
(Source unknown)
Background
Tacitus was born about A.D. 56 and probably died some time after A.D. 117. We don't know a lot about him. Though he wrote quite a bit, he was very "taciturn" when it came to writing about himself. His birthplace may have been somewhere in the vicinity of Massilia (modern Marseilles, in southern France). It was an old Greek city-colony, a centre of sophisticated Greek culture and philosophy in a Roman empire that thought such things effeminate and unworthy.
His Career and Personality
Tacitus was an aristocrat through and through, the son of a member of the privileged Roman "knight" class. He eventually became a Roman senator. This position brought him great wealth and power. Despite his social advantages and very high rank, he complained bitterly about the tyrany of the elitist, autocratic political system and the lack of political and personal freedom in the dictatorship of the Empire. Like many people in such situations, however, he led a very successful public career. This could have been the result of several factors. Perhaps he could deal with the obvious hypocrisy of his position. Perhaps he was personally ambitious or cynical. He may have had a sense of duty to his state, his people or to the idealism of Rome and its "destiny". It may have been a combination of all these.

Gaius Cornelius Tacitus
This article is about the historian Tacitus. For his descendant, the Emperor Tacitus, see Marcus Claudius Tacitus Publius or Gaius Cornelius Tacitus (born around AD - died around AD ), was a Roman historian . His major works - the Annals and the Histories - took for their subject the history of the Roman Empire The Annals ab excessu Divi Augusti ) was Tacitus' final work, covering the period from the death of Augustus Caesar in AD . He wrote at least 16 books, but books 7-10 and parts of books 5, 6, 11 and 16 are missing. Book 6 ends with the death of Tiberius and books 7-12 presumably covered the reigns of Caligula and Claudius . The remaining books cover the reign of Nero , perhaps until his death in June or until the end of that year, to connect with the Histories . The second half of book 16 is missing. We do not know whether Tacitus completed the work or whether he wrote any further associated books. Of the Histories only the first four books and 26 chapters of the fifth book have survived, covering the year and the first part of . The work is believed to have continued up to the death of Domitian on September 18 Tacitus also wrote three shorter works: the Agricola , a biography of his father-in-law Gnaeus Julius Agricola ; the Germania ; and the Dialogus Tacitus was primarily concerned with the balance of power between the Roman senate and the Roman Emperors . His writings are filled with tales of corruption and tyranny in the governing

Publius Cornelius Tacitus Agricola translated by Alfred John Church and William Jackson Brodribb London: Macmillan, 1877 We have only to read that the panegyrics pronounced by Arulenus Rusticus on Paetus Thrasea, and by Herennius Senecio on Priscus Helvidius, were made capital crimes, that not only their persons but their very books were objects of rage, and that the triumvirs were commissioned to burn in the forum those works of splendid genius. They fancied, forsooth, that in that fire the voice of the Roman people, the freedom of the Senate, and the conscience of the human race were perishing, while at the same time they banished the teachers of philosophy, and exiled every noble pursuit, that nothing good might anywhere confront them. Certainly we showed a magnificent example of patience; as a former age had witnessed the extreme of liberty, so we witnessed the extreme of servitude, when the informer robbed us of the interchanges of speech, and hearing. We should have lost memory as well as voice, had it been as easy to forget as to keep silence. Britain was then under Vettius Bolanus, who governed more mildly than suited so turbulent a province. Agricola moderated his energy and restrained his ardour, that he might not grow too important, for he had learnt to obey, and understood well how to combine expediency with honour. Soon afterwards Britain received for its governor a man of consular rank, Petilius Cerialis. Agricola’s merits had now room for display. Cerialis let him share at first indeed only the toils and dangers, but before long the glory of war, often by way of trial putting him in command of part of the army, and sometimes, on the strength of the result, of larger forces. Never to enhance his own renown did Agricola boast of his exploits; he always referred his success, as though he were but an instrument, to his general and director. Thus by his valour in obeying orders and by his modesty of speech he escaped jealousy without losing distinction.

Tacitus Tacitus (Cornelius Tacitus), c. A.D. c. A.D. , Roman historian. Little is known for certain of his life. He was a friend of Pliny the Younger and married the daughter of Cnaeus Julius Agricola. In A.D. 97 he was appointed substitute consul under Nerva, and later he was proconsul of Asia. The first of his works was the Dialogus [dialogue], a discussion of oratory in the style of Cicero, demonstrating to some degree why Tacitus was celebrated as an eloquent speaker; this work was long disputed, but his authorship is now generally accepted. Tacitus then wrote a biography of Agricola, expressing his admiration for his father-in-law as a good and able man. His small treatise De origine et situ Germanorum [concerning the origin and location of the Germans], commonly called the Germania or Germany
