Synge, John Millington [sing] Pronunciation Key Synge, John Millington , Irish poet and dramatist, b. near Dublin, of Protestant parents. He was an important figure in the Irish literary renaissance In the Shadow of the Glen (1903), a comedy, and Riders to the Sea Abbey Theatre . Two of Synge's comedies, The Well of the Saints (1905) and The Playboy of the Western World (1907), were presented by the Abbey players. The latter play created a furor of resentment among Irish patriots stung by Synge's spoof of heroic ideals and nationalism. His later works were The Tinker's Wedding, published in 1908 but not produced for fear of further riots, and Deirdre of the Sorrows, a tragedy unfinished at the time of his death but presented by the Abbey players in 1910. The Aran Islands (1907) is Synge's journal of his stay on the islands.

    JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE
The Shadow of the Glen, 1903

    JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE
(Rathfanham 16 April 1871 - Dublin 24 March 1909) LIFE: Coming from a bourgeois family he first studies at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and at Trinity College where he degrees, then to Paris where he comes in contact with the symbolist atmosphere. He travels to France, Germany and Italy observing and meditating and coming then back to Paris where in 1897 he meets the poet William Butler Yeats . Synge shows to the poet some of his works about the French literature but Yeats finds them insufficient; but having immediately understood the great abilities and possibility of this young talent he exhorts him to leave Paris to go to live for some time in the Aran islands, off the Galway bay, in order to learn habits, traditions and language of the Gaelic people.
Synge in contact with that nature of incisive beauty, near those plain and primitive folk, definitively forms his temperament of man and writer. He writes The Aran Islands, 1907 , kind of diary of his stay on the islands, and the dramas The Shadow of the Glen, 1903

As a young man he studied music in Germany and later lived in Paris, where he wrote literary criticism. In Paris he met his compatriot William Butler Yeats, who persuaded Synge to live for a while in the Aran Islands and then return to Dublin and devote himself to creative work. All of Synge's plays reflect his experiences in the Aran Islands. Intense and poetic in style, his works depict the bleak and tragic lives of Irish peasants and fisherfolk. His first two one-act plays : In the Shadow of the Glen (1903), a comedy, and Riders to the Sea (1904), a tragedy : were presented by the Irish National Theatre Society. In 1904 this group, with Synge, Yeats, and Lady Gregory as codirectors, organized the famous Abbey Theatre . Two of Synge's comedies

In 1906, Synge became a director of the Abbey Theatre and the following year his best-known work, The Playboy of the Western World , opened there to riots. These were supposedly incited by Synge's use of the word "shift" (Christy says of the heroine Pegeen that he would choose her even if he were "brought a drift of chosen females, standing in their shifts . . . from this place to the eastern world"). were performed at the Abbey. His last play, Deidre of the Sorrows Poems and Translations , for which Yeats wrote a foreword, was published in 1909. Yeats wrote, "He was but the more hated because he gave his country what it needed, an unmoved mind." The Playboy of the Western World
