From Sonnets of English Dramatic Poets (1590-1650)
Love and Sleep
Lying asleep between the strokes of night
I saw my love lean over my sad bed,
Pale as the duskiest lily's leaf or head,
Smooth-skinned and dark, with bare throat made to bite,
Too wan for blushing and too warm for white,
But perfect-colored without white or red.
And her lips opened amorously, and said
I wist not what, saving one wordDelight,
And all her face was honey to my mouth,
And all her body pasture to mine eyes;
The long lithe arms and hotter hands than fire,
The quivering flanks, hair smelling of the south,
The bright light feet, the splendid supple thighs
And glittering eyelids of my soul's desire.
Hope and Fear
With eyes enkindled as the sun's own sphere,
Hope from the front of youth in godlike cheer
Looks Godward, past the shades where blind men grope

Swinburne, Algernon Charles
Algernon Charles Swinburne was born April 5, 1837 in Grosvenor Place, London, the son of Admiral Sir John Swinburne; but spent most of his boyhood on the Isle of Wight. With Shelley and Byron, he is one of the very few poets since the days of Raleigh and Sidney to come from the aristocracy.
He had a very orthodox upper-class education, attending Eton and then Oxford. Influenced by the poetry of Shelley and possessed of the common student leanings toward political radicalism, Swinburne became known, along with James Thompson, as a kind of Poet Laureate of atheism. At Oxford, he met nearly everyone who would influence his later life, including Rossetti, Morris, and Burne-Jones, who in 1857 were painting their Arthurian murals on the walls of the Oxford Union. Benjamin Jowett, the master of Balliol College and translator of Plato, recognized his poetic talent and tried to keep him from being expelled for his radical leanings and atheism with the statement that he did not want "Oxford to sin twice against poetry" (the expulsion of Shelley being the first).
In 1879, with Swinburne nearly dead from alcoholism and dissolution, his legal advisor Theodore Watts-Dunton took him in, and was successful in getting him to adopt a healthier style of life. Swinburne lived the rest of his days at Watts-Dunton's home outside London. He saw less and less of his old friends, who thought him "imprisoned", but his growing deafness accounts for some of his decreased sociability. He died of influenza in 1909.

FRAGOLETTA by: Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909)
    LOVE! what shall be said of thee?
    The son of grief begot by joy?
    Being sightless, wilt thou see?
    Being sexless, wilt thou be
    Maiden or boy?
    I dreamed of strange lips yesterday
    And cheeks wherein the ambiguous blood
    Was like a rose'syea,
    A rose's when it lay
    Within the bud.
    What fields have bred thee, or what groves
    Concealed thee, O mysterious flower,
    O double rose of Love's,
    With leaves that lure the doves
    From bud to bower?
    I dare not kiss it, lest my lip
    Press harder than an indrawn breath,
    And all the sweet life slip
    Forth, and the sweet leaves drip,
    Bloodlike, in death.
    O sole desire of my delight!
    O sole delight of my desire!
    Mine eyelids and eyesight
    Feed on thee day and night
    Like lips of fire.
    Lean back thy throat of carven pearl,
    Lest thy mouth murmur like the dove's;
    Say, Venus hath no girl,
    No front of female curl,
    Among her Loves.
    Thy sweet low bosom, thy close hair,
    Thy straight soft flanks and slenderer feet,
    Thy virginal strange air

BEFORE DAWN by: Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909)
    WEET life, if life were stronger,
    Earth clear of years that wrong her,
    Then two things might live longer,
    Two sweeter things than they;
    Delight, the rootless flower,
    And love, the bloomless bower;
    Delight that lives an hour,
    And love that lives a day.
    From evensong to daytime,
    When April melts in Maytime,
    Love lengthens out his playtime,
    Love lessens breath by breath,
    And kiss by kiss grows older
    On listless throat or shoulder
    Turned sideways now, turned colder
    Than life that dreams of death.
    This one thing once worth giving
    Life gave, and seemed worth living;
    Sin sweet beyond forgiving
    And brief beyond regret:
    To laugh and love together
    And weave with foam and feather
    And wind and words the tether
    Our memories play with yet.
    Ah, one thing worth beginning,
    One thread in life worth spinning,
    Ah sweet, one sin worth sinning,
    With all the whole soul's will;
    To lull you till one stilled you,
    To kiss you till one killed you,
    To feed you till one filled you

Algernon Charles Swinburne
Algernon Charles Swinburne was born in London, the son of an admiral, and grew up on the Isle of Wight. He was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, leaving without a degree. He first came to public attention with the play Atalanta in Calydon (1865) but it was the publication of the irreverent Poems and Ballads the following year which brought him a mixture of controversy and acclaim. Thereafter he wrote prolifically, publishing a more toned-down Poems and Ballads: Second Series in 1878 and several prose works. He was rescued from alcohol addiction in 1879 by his friend Theodore Watts Dunton, at his home under his control in Putney for the rest of his life. His latter years were highly productive and he produced Tristam of Lyonesse Poems and Ballads: Third Series (1889), and several verse plays. He was also an incisive literary critic, whose subjects included Baudelaire, Blake , Hugo, Webster, Shakespeare Byron Chorus from 'Atalanta'

TRISTAN and ISOLT
Tristan and Isolt are second only to Lancelot and Guinevere as the great lovers of the Arthurian legends. The story of their tragic love has been the subject of numerous medieval and modern retellings. The medieval versions of the story are sometimes divided into two branches, called the courtly and the common versions. The former is represented by the Tristan of the Anglo-Norman poet Thomas, which was written in the latter part of the twelfth century. His version in turn influenced Gottfried von Strassburg, whose Tristan , written in the first decade of the thirteenth century, is one of the great romances of the Middle Ages, and the Old Norse Tristrams saga Roman de Tristran , which like Eilhart von Oberge's Middle High German Tristrant , also written in the late twelfth century, has some elements considered less than courtly. For example, the love potion in these versions is of limited duration; and Isolt is turned over by Mark to a colony of lepers as punishment for her infidelity. There were many other medieval versions of the tale, including a long French prose romance, the Middle English poem

LANCELOT
Lancelot is the greatest of Arthur's knights. Son of King Ban of Benwick, he is known as Lancelot of the Lake or Lancelot du Lac because he was raised by the Lady of the Lake. Among his many adventures are the rescue of the abducted Queen Guinevere from Meleagant, an unsuccessful quest for the Holy Grail and the rescue of the queen after she is condemned to be burned to death for adultery. Lancelot is loved by Elaine of Astolat, who dies because her love is unrequited. Elaine, the daugher of King Pelles, tricks Lancelot into sleeping with her and from that union Galahad is born. His love for Guinevere ultimately brings about the downfall of Arthur's realm.
