Jonathan Swift (1667-1745):
Hints Towards An Essay On Conversation, 1713
Introductory Note In Swift's writings here printed will be found good examples of his treatment of social and literary questions. The ironical humor running through this essay frequently became, when he dealt with subjects on which he felt keenly, incredibly savage and at times extremely coarse; but for the power of his invective and the effectiveness of his sarcasm there is hardly a parallel in the language. The Essay - Hints Towards An Essay On Conversation I have observed few obvious subjects to have been so seldom, or, at least, so slightly handled as this; and, indeed, I know few so difficult to be treated as it ought, nor yet upon which there seemeth so much to be said. I was prompted to write my thoughts upon this subject by mere indignation, to reflect that so useful and innocent a pleasure, so fitted for every period and condition of life, and so much in all men's power, should be so much neglected and abused. And in this discourse it will be necessary to note those errors that are obvious, as well as others which are seldomer observed, since there are few so obvious, or acknowledged, into which most men, some time or other, are not apt to run.

Swift, Jonathan
Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was an Irish-born author who gained notoriety and political influence as a sharp-witted satirist. His most famous work, Gulliver's Travels , followed the journeys of a character named Lemuel Gulliver through the imaginary lands of the Lilliputians (pygmies), the Brobdingnags (giants), and the Houyhnhnms (an ultra-rational society of horses) who ruled over the cretin Yahoos (an uncivilized, humanlike race). Other satires included A Modest Proposal (which ironically suggested that the British eat their own children) and The Battle of the Books (which poked fun at literary critics). Many Swiftian words have become integrated into the English language. When something is "of Lilliputian proportions" it is very, very small; referring to someone as a "Yahoo" implies that they lack manners and behave badly. Yahoo, incidentally, is also the name of the most famous World Wide Web directory, housed and maintained at Stanford University! use your browser's "back" function to return to the text

  • A Bio-bibliographical note about Jonathan Swift
"Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin in 1667 after his father's death. He was educated at Kilkenny Grammar School and at Trinity College, Dublin, where he was censured for offences against discipline and had to obtain his degree by 'special grace'. "Swift was ordained in Ireland in 1695 and was given a prebend at St Patrick's, Dublin, where he was later made dean. An ardent pacifist who loathed cruelty, imperialism and war, he wrote many pamphlets on religion and war and during the course of frequent visits to London did much to try and improve the political situation in Ireland. The details of his daily life in London are recounted in a series of intimate letters to Esther Johnson, published as Journal to Stella . He was also very close to Esther Vanhomrigh, whom he met in 1708, and his final rupture with her in about 1723 may have hastened her death. The story of their love-affair is related in Swift's poem 'Cadenus and Vanessa'.

    JONATHAN SWIFT (1667-1745)
Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World . By Lemuel Gulliver. London: Benjamin Motte, 1726. 4 volurnes in 2. Although it has achieved lasting fame as fiction, fable and children's book, Gulliver's Travels was a direct and bitter satire of the English court, political parties, religious dissensions, philosophies, men of science, historians and projectors of Swift's day. Swift, who was born in Dublin, served in England as secretary to Sir William Temple from 1689 to 1699 and returned to Ireland in 1714. He was involved in many political controversies, especially those relating to the treatment of the Irish by the English, and his satirical pamphlets were widely circulated, read, and influential. Alexander Pope and John Gay claimed that Gulliver's Travels was read "from the cabinet council to the nursery." Gift in Memory of Albert N. Raub,
    President of Delalware College 1888-1896

    Jonathan Swift
Swift, Jonathan 1667-1745. Swift was the grandson of a Royalist vicar of Yorkshire, whose three sons sought their fortune in Ireland after the Restoration settlement. One of the sons, Jonathan, married Abigail Erick (or Herrick), daughter of a Leicestershire family, and obtained a legal post in Dublin. He died before his expected child was born; this was Jonathan Swift who, though born in Dublin, educated at Kilkenny School, and a graduate of Trinity College, could declare at one stage of his life: 'I am not of this vile country, I am an Englishman.' But the 'vile country' was to become his passionate concern. From his birth, on 30 November 1667, Swift's nurse doted on the baby boy and, being obliged to return to her home in Whitehaven, in Cumberland, on family matters, took her charge with her rather than have him out of her sight. She proved the best of foster mothers and when young Jonathan returned to Dublin at the age of three he was able to read. But soon after that his mother returned to her family in Leicestershire, leaving him in the care of his uncle Godwin. So his start in life was not exactly auspicious; he was a virtual orphan from his fourth year. His uncle sent him to Kilkenny, the best school in Ireland (Congreve was a fellow pupil), and at 14 Swift entered Trinity College as a pensioner. He was guilty of bad behaviour there and was only awarded his degree speciale gratia
