Christmas Day by Susan Coolidge From Lothrop, Harriet Mulford Stone; Coolidge, Susan; Miller, Joaquin; Powelson, Mrs. Amy Therese; etc.. Twilight stories
The Christmas chimes are pealing high Beneath the solemn Christmas sky, And blowing winds their notes prolong Like echoes from an angel's song; Good will and peace, peace and good will Ring out the carols glad and gay, Telling the heavenly message still That Christ the Child was born to-day.
In lowly hut and palace hall Peasant and king keep festival, And childhood wears a fairer guise, And tenderer shine all mother-eyes; The aged man forgets his years, The mirthful heart is doubly gay, The sad are cheated of their tears, For Christ the Lord was born to-day. Woolsey, Sarah Chauncey
(1835-1905), author of children's novels Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 29, 1835, Sarah Woolsey displayed a love for reading and writing stories at an early age. In 1855 she moved with her family to New Haven, Connecticut (her uncle, Theodore Dwight Woolsey, was president of Yale College). During the Civil War she was active in hospital work. In 1870, after her father's death, the family settled in Newport, Rhode Island. By that time Sarah Woolsey had already published a few magazine articles, and, in part through the influence of her close friend Helen Hunt (Jackson), she began to write in earnest. Woolsey's first book, a collection of stories for girls, appeared as The New-Year's Bargain under the pseudonym "Susan Coolidge" in 1871. She used that name thereafter. Her subsequent books include What Katy Did (1872), a novel for girls that was inspired by her own childhood and the first of a highly popular series; Mischief's Thanksgiving Eyebright A Little Country Girl Just Sixteen The Barberry Bush (1893); and

CLOVER by Susan Coolidge In 1871, Sarah Woolsey began writing for periodicals under the pseudonym "Susan Coolidge." In addition to her magazine articles, she edited and translated several works and collections of letters, composed poetry, and wrote children's books. She created one five-volume series, "What Katy Did," which is still cited in the top ten favourite reads for 12-year-old girls, and wrote at least sixteen other children's books, of which Clover is one, a sequel to "What Katy Did at School" and "What Katy Did Next"
Chapter One A Talk on the Doorsteps

It was one of those afternoons in late April, which are as mild and balmy as any June day. The air was full of the chirps and twitters of nest-building birds, and of sweet indefinable odours from half-developed leaf-buds and cherry and pear blossoms. The wisterias overhead were thickly starred with pointed pearl-coloured sacs growing purpler with each hour, which would be flowers before long; the hedges were quickening into life, the long pensile willow-boughs and the honey-locusts hung in a mist of fine green against the sky, and delicious smells came with every puff of wind from the bed of white violets under the parlour windows.
Katy and Clover Carr, sitting with their sewing on the doorsteps, drew in with every breath the sense of spring. Who does not know the delightfulness of that first sitting out of doors after a long winter's confinement? It seems like flinging the gauntlet down to the powers of cold. Hope and renovation are in the air. Life has conquered Death, and to the happy hearts in love with life there is joy in the victory. The two sisters talked busily as they sewed, but all the time an only half-conscious rapture informed their senses - the sympathy of that which is immortal in human souls with the resurrection of natural things, which is the sure pledge of immortality.

Click on this link IN THE HIGH VALLEY by Susan Coolidge Chapter Four - In the High Valley Meanwhile, as the 'Limited' bore the young English travellers on their western way, a good deal of preparation was going on for their benefit in that special nook of the Rocky Mountains toward which their course was directed. It was one of those clear-cut, jewel-like mornings which seemed peculiar to Colorado, with dazzling gold sunshine, a cloudless sky of deep sapphire blue, and air which had touched the mountain snows somewhere in its nightly blowing, and still carried on its wings the cool pure zest of the contact.
Hours were generally early in the High Valley, but today they were a little earlier than usual, for everyone had a sense of much to be done. Clover Templestowe did not always get up to administer to her husband and brother-in-law their 'stirrup-cup' of coffee; but this morning she was prompt at her post, and after watching them ride up the valley, and standing for a moment at the open door for a breath of the scented wind, she seated herself at her sewing-machine. A steady whirring hum presently filled the room, rising to the floor above and quickening the movements there. Elsie, running rapidly downstairs half an hour later, found her sister with quite a pile of little cheesecloth squares and oblongs folded on the table near her.

Coolidge, Susan
Woolsey, Sarah Chauncey (1835?-1905), pseudonym Susan Coolidge, American writer best remembered for her so-called Katy books for girls: What Katy Did (1872), What Katy Did at School (1873), and What Katy Did Next (1886). Many of her works have a domestic setting and advocate traditional home values, a characteristic of the genre of girls' books, which began with The Daisy Chain (1856), by English writer Charlotte Yonge, and was popularized by American writer Louisa May Alcott, author of the classic novel Little Women (1868), and American writer Elizabeth Wetherell.
Woolsey was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to a large family on which the Carr family of her Katy books was modeled. She spent much of her childhood in New Haven, Connecticut, as her family was closely connected with Yale University there. Woolsey worked as a nurse during the American Civil War (1861-1865), after which she turned to writing. Her first book, A New Year's Bargain, appeared in 1871, and was edited by Louisa May Alcott. Woolsey's other works include two books about the sister of her Katy character, Clover: Clover (1888) and In the High Valley (1891). She also wrote poetry and edited the various correspondences of English novelists Fanny Burney and Jane Austen.

WHEN persons decide on taking a journey, their first desire is to get certain questions answered. They wish to know exactly how, when, and where to go, what to carry in their trunks, and how much money the expedition is likely to cost. These questions are not, so far as I know, answered by any of the existing sources of information with regard to the California trip. At least, so we found when, last spring, we rather suddenly resolved upon a western journey. Being quite ignorant of what lay before us, we went eagerly to work to collect facts. We read

SIX of us once, my darlings, played together
Beneath green boughs, which faded long ago,
Made merry in the golden summer weather,
Pelted each other with new-fallen snow. Did the sun always shine? I can't remember
A single lightning-bolt or peal of thunder,
To daunt our bright unfearing lives: can you? We quarrelled often, but made peace as quickly, Shed many tears, but laughed the while they fell, Had our small woes, our childish bumps and bruises, But Mother always "kissed and made them well." Yet here we are in bonnets and tail-coats

Reviewed by Rochelle Caviness - July 7, 2001 What Katy Did is a heartwarming, and at times, heart wrenching story of a little girl, who wants to grow up to be beautiful and to do something so special that it will make her famous. But before she can achieve her goal, she meets with a tragic accident that leaves her partially paralyzed. How Katy deals with the accident, and how it matures her, is the main focus of this story. In this story you also get to witness the carefree antics of the Carr children as they play, go to school, and interact with each other and their next door neighbor, Cecy Hall. Katy's triumph over adversity, her enduring spirit, and her faith in God will serve as a legacy to anyone who listens to (or reads) this book. The unabridged audio recording of this book opens with a biographical sketch of the book's author, Sarah Chauncey Woolsey, who wrote under the penname Susan Coolidge. Coolidge was a contemporary of Louisa May Alcott. Already a respected writer, Coolidge was convinced by her publisher to try her hand at writing a children's story. In part this was due to the success of Little Women and the public demand for more wholesome children's stories.

While photocopying an old copy of the Poetry Project's Newsletter, per a request from someone or another, I happened to come upon the following: "Review of MINE: The One That Enters the Stories by Clark Coolidge" by Bernadette Mayer (dated October 1983 and now available on the Poetry Project's web site ). On reading the review, I realized that there had been an important link between these two minds at one timethat there were intricate layers of association between these two brilliant, but under-studied, contemporary poets. I was enthralled by the find, both by the vividness of the writing I held in my hands, and also at the rich trove of correspondence and collaboration hinted at in this singular review. I think the following excerpt may demonstrate how potent, even revolutionary, this connection was. Coolidge and Mayer evidently shared a common "mission" in their writings to encompass consciousness, language and the intricacy of physical/scientific/geologic structures, and to cross whatever fake borders had been set up between genres, materials, or even words themselves. The review was written at a time in which this mission seemed urgently imminent, and yet frustratingly elusive. In a subsequent conversation I had with Mayer, she says, "We were big fans of each other's workit was nice to know there was somebody else doing something interesting out there." Mayer and Coolidge wrote to each other over a period of approximately 24 years, a correspondence that Mayer says ended with her stroke in 1994. In addition, they collaborated, from approximately 1972-1978, on a 71-page work titled "The Cave." (The individual collaborative pieces are dated September 10, 1972 to June 1978. In addition, one portion of The Cave, titled "KARSTARTS," was published in
