He is also one of the earliest realists The word realism is used in several of the liberal arts; particularly painting, literature, and philosophy. It is also used in international relations. In the visual arts and literature, realism is a mid-19th century movement, which started in France. The realists sought to render everyday characters, situations, dilemmas, and events; all in an "accurate" (or realistic) manner. Realism began as a reaction to romanticism, in which subjects were treated idealistically. Realists tended to discard theatrical drama and classical forms of art to depict sometimes ugly or commonplace subjects, sometimes even a moral message.

His ART OF WAR brought him to the notice of Ho Lu, King of Wu.
Lu said to him: "I have carefully perused your 13 chapters.May I submit your theory of managing soldiers to a slight test?"
Sun Tzu replied: "You may."
Ho Lu asked: "May the test be applied to women?"
Sun Tzu replied: "You may."
180 courtesans were brought then out of the Palace. Sun Tzu divided them into two companies, and placed one of the King's favorite concubines at the head of each. He then bade them all take spears in their hands, and addressed them thus:
"I presume you know the difference between front and back, right hand and left hand?"
The girls replied: "Yes".
Sun Tzu went on: "When I say "Eyes front," you must look straight ahead. When I say "Left turn," you must face towards your left hand. When I say "Right turn," you must face towardsyour right hand. When I say "About turn," you must face right round towards your back."
Again the girls assented. The words of command having been thus explained, he set up the halberds and battle-axes in order to begin the drill. Then, to the sound of drums, he gave the order "Right turn." But the girls only burst out laughing. Sun Tzu said: "If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, then the general is to blame."

Sun Wu and his Book
Ssu-ma Ch`ien gives the following biography of Sun Tzu: Sun Tzu Wu was a native of the Ch`i State. His ART OF WAR brought him to the notice of Ho Lu, It seems likely, then, that "Pin" was a nickname bestowed on him after his mutilation, unless the story was invented in order to account for the name. The crowning incident of his career, the crushing defeat of his treacherous rival P`ang Chuan, will be found briefly related in Chapter V. ss. 19, note. To return to the elder Sun Tzu. He is mentioned in two other passages of the SHIH CHI: In the third year of his reign [512 B.C.] Ho Lu, king of Wu, took the field with Tzu-hsu [i.e. Wu Yuan] and Po P`ei, and attacked Ch`u. He captured the town of Shu and slew the two prince's sons who had formerly been generals of Wu. He was then meditating a descent on Ying [the capital] ; but the general Sun Wu said: "The army is exhausted. It is not yet possible. We must wait"....

Sun Tzu Suan Ching (Sunzi Suanjing)
This book is also known as Sunzi Suanjing . Translated to English, the title of this book is the following, ' Master Sun's Mathematical Manual '. It is written approximately in the third century by a man called Sun Zi . According to Wang Ling [ed. 1963, p.275], the Sun Tzu Suan Ching could not have been written earlier than 280 AD and later than 473 AD. "This was because the taxation method by family units (hu diao) in terms of silk floss (mian) (Ch.3, Prob.9) was established in 280AD; as for the later date, that was the time when the mensuration scale between chi and duan was changed, and Sun Zi followed the old scale (see also [Needham 1959, p.33])" [The Fleeting Footsteps, Lam and Ang 1992, p.7]. Sun Tzu Suan Ching is a basic text aimed at introducing the mathematical tables and the basic approach to mathematical operations. This book provides its readers with a valuable source for understanding the rod numerals computation process and the famous chinese remainder problem explained in the web page before this. This text actually gained official recognition in ancient China when it was "incorporated as one of the ten mathematical classics commissioned for use in the imperial examinations in 656 AD." [The Fleeting Footsteps, Lam and Ang 1992, p.4]

Sun Tzu Quotes All men can see these tactics whereby I conquer, but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved.
Sun Tzu

All war is deception.
Sun Tzu

For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.
Sun Tzu

Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.
Sun Tzu
If our soldiers are not overburdened with money, it is not because they have a distaste for riches; if their lives are not unduly long, it is not because they are disinclined to longevity. Sun Tzu If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles. Sun Tzu It is essential to seek out enemy agents who have come to conduct espionage against you and to bribe them to serve you. Give them instructions and care for them. Thus doubled agents are recruited and used. Sun Tzu Now the reason the enlightened prince and the wise general conquer the enemy whenever they move and their achievements surpass those of ordinary men is foreknowledge.

Pasco calls on Sun Tzu again for motivation By GREG AUMAN, Times Staff Writer Published October 15, 2003 One who is weak must prepare against his enemy. One who is strong makes his enemy prepare against him. It's a safe bet that Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu wasn't writing about the Delaware Wing-T offense when he penned The Art of War some 2,400 years ago. Nonetheless, the quote is on the cover page of the Pasco High coaching staff's scouting report in preparation for Thursday's district showdown with Wesley Chapel. Pasco actually breaks out Sun Tzu, whom Redskins coach Steve Spurrier likes to quote in game preparation, for motivation leading into any week. Assistant coach Brian Rezzuti picked up the quotes at a coaching clinic, getting the idea from a former Gators assistant coach. Loose translation and two millenia of interpretation allow Sun Tzu's work to be applied to nearly anything requiring a little strategy. Internet sites sell books that use Sun Tzu's principles for everything from small-business management to love and relationships to parenting teens, which isn't far from high school football coaching.

, Chinese general, circa 500 B.C. A collection of essays on the art of war is attributed to Sun Tzu. There are a growing number of translations of this Chinese classic, usually titled The Art of War
Knowledge of Sun Tzu reached Europe shortly before the French Revolution in the form of a summary translation by Father J. J. M. Amiot, a French Jesuit priest. In the various translations, Sun Tzu is sometimes referred to as Sun Wu, and Sun Tzi. The most fundamental of Sun Tzu's principles for the conduct of war is that "All warfare is based on deception". Another key Sun Tzu principle is that "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting." Sun Tzu's ideas spread to the rest of Asia and to Japan.
The works of Sun Tzu have been widely known in the United States since the mid-1970s. Diplomat Henry Kissinger has made reference to Sun Tzu and the principles for the conduct of warfare has been the subject of serious study in U.S. military circles for many years. The Art of War as applied to business, sports, diplomacy and personal lives has been popularized in American business and management texts. Sun Tzu may be the most frequently quoted Chinese personality in the world today.

By M.E.H. Name a 2500-years old Chinese handbook of strategy and tactics that provides thought-provoking, turn-of-the-millennium guidelines for those competing in the speed-driven global marketplace. This book dominates any bibliography on the topic of strategic warfare from sources that are translated to English, including other Chinese authors, Machiavelli, and Von Clausewitz. This book, The Art of War , was written by Sun Tzu, a famous Chinese military advisor. It is a treatise on the nature of conflict and competition that has been used on the battlefield and as well as the corporate boardroom. It has been said that this book is required reading in boardrooms and military schools worldwide. Sun Tzu may be the most frequently quoted Chinese personality in the world today, eclipsing Confucius, Lao Tze, and Mao Tse-Dong. Mao Tse Dong, the former leader of the People’s Republic of China, often quoted Sun Tzu in his speeches and some of his writings. Quotes from The Art of War have been used by political and military leaders, businessmen, lawyers, professional sport coaches, and athletes in their books and speeches, including celebrities such as NBA basketball coach Pat Riley and famed trial lawyer Gerry Spence. YOGI's World
Yogi Berra had a 19 year career as a player then went on to be a coach and manager. He was a .285 lifetime hitter with 358 dingers, and he won three MVP awards. He is probably baseball's greatest pundit known for his wonderful little utterances...
Once Billy Martin called him and when Yogi answered with a sleepy "Hello", Billy said, "Yogi, I hope I didn't wake you." Yogi replied, "Don't worry about it... I had to get up to answer the phone anyhow."
"It is deja vu all over again."
Once when Yogi was managing the Mets (back when they wore the ugly orange uniforms), John Lindsey's wife (the mayor of NY) said to Yogi: "My... Mr. Berra, you look very cool in that nice bright uniform." Yogi replied, "Yeah lady you don't look so hot yourself."
Yogi Berra on the art of hitting: "Think? How the hell can you think and hit at the same time?"
Yogi Berra on Yankee stadium's notorious shadows in the outfield: "Hey it gets late early out there."

http://www.chinastrategies.com/intro.htm
Introduction Table of Contents Sample Chapters Bibliography ... Notes on Text Introduction For the western reader the Thirty-Six Strategies offers timeless insights into the workings of human nature under conditions of extreme stress. Many of the proverbs are based on events that occurred during China's Warring States Era (403-221 BC). This was a time so infamous, that a later Emperor banned history books of that era on the grounds that they contained accounts of such a devious nature, they would morally corrupt all who read them. Many of those accounts are presented here along with the exploits of some of the orient's greatest generals, kings, emperors, and shoguns. Over 118 anecdotes are included to both explain and offer examples of each strategy's application. By learning from the old masters of the art of deception, one is better able to spot the modern pretenders, for, though the players come and go, the game remains the same. History of the Thirty Six Strategies All modern versions of the Thirty-Six Strategies are derived from a tattered book discovered at a roadside vendor's stall in Szechwan in 1941. It turned out to be a reprint of an earlier book dating back to the late Ming or early Ching dynasty entitled, The Secret Art of War, The Thirty-Six Strategies. There was no mention of who the authors or compilers were or when it was originally published. A reprint was first published for the general public in Beijing in 1979. Since then several Chinese and English language versions have been published in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
